Volume 1 Chapter 13 Elves are such creatures?

Volume 1 Chapter 13 Elves are such creatures?

"Mr. Ryuuji, what do you mean by 'request'?"

Ignoring Lene who was squirming next to me, I pointed to a corner of the field.

"Ah, I want to lend a part of your field to Lene. She is an Alchemist, so she needs to grow various plants to make medicine."

"If that's the case, yes! Of course, I don't mind!"

 She readily agreed.

Compared to the vegetables grown in a day, this was more than a fair trade.

 "Ah, but..."

"...Hmm? Is there something troubling you?"

Seeing Lana, who was just happy, suddenly frown, I crouched down to match her eye level and asked.

I was used to doing this when Suzu was small.

"Yes... Actually, since last autumn, boars have been coming from the forest. If there is damage again..."

 "...I see."

That is certainly a serious situation.

Crop damage is one thing, but if Lana and the others encounter a boar, they might get badly injured or even die.

Then, there is only one course of action.

I stepped outside for a moment and looked around.

Lene and the others were following behind me.

"Hey everyone, stay away from me for a bit. Umm... this area should work."

"Mr. Ryuuji, what are you going to do?"

 "Well, just wait and see."

While answering the curious Lene, I took a thumb-sized magic stone from my magic bag and infused it with Magic Power, then quietly placed it on the piled-up soil.

 Immediately, there was a response.

The soil around the magic stone became sticky, slowly starting to take on a human shape.

And in the end, a mud golem, even bigger than me by 2 heads, was completed.

 "Huh... a, golem!?"

 It seemed Lene was surprised.

 Huh?

I thought creating golems wasn't unusual for an Alchemist.

Was there something surprising about it?

"Ah, this is a mud golem made using the <Magic Stone of Mudcore>. ...I, Ryuuji, name you. Your name is <Spriggan>. I command you, do not trample the plants, enter the field before you, and drive away any beasts that harm people and plants."

 'M-mud'

The Spriggan, with no eyes, nose, or mouth, made a sound from who knows where, walked right up to the field, and stood there like a statue.

 This should be fine.

 "...Huh?"

Looking over, I saw Lana and Lene with their cute mouths agape, staring at the Spriggan.

...Not only that, but even Lene seemed dazed, but why?

"...Mr. Ryuuji's granting technique can even create golems..."

"...Even Alchemists create golems and homunculi, right?"

"No... if they can be created that easily, it would undermine the Alchemist's standing..."

It seemed she was mumbling with her shoulders slumped.

Even the intermediary magic stones aren't easy to make.

Well, I still have a stock of <Magic Stone of Mudcore>, though.

 "Huh? What's wrong?"

Lena poked my waist, so I squatted down again to meet her gaze.

Tilting her head, Lena pointed at the Spriggan.

 "...a monster?"

"Ah, no, no. That's called a golem, a creation by magic... but I guess that doesn't make sense. Well, to put it simply, it's an ally for you guys. It won't attack anything except for beasts like boars, so don't worry."

 "Oh!"

It was hard to tell if Lena understood or not, but it seemed she grasped that she wouldn't be harmed, as she curiously touched the Spriggan with her hands.

"But... I'm happy to use part of the field, but it feels like Mr. Ryuuji isn't gaining much from this..."

"No, no, Lene and I are already in this together, so I don't think that's something to worry about."

As an Alchemist, she seems to be particular about individual equivalent exchanges, but my profit is Lene's profit, and Lene's profit is my profit.

However, right after hearing my response, Lene's ears turned bright red for some reason, and she started to fidget with her fingers.

"Huh... Huh? Together in this... Could it be, a, a proposal...?"

"...I don't know what you're misunderstanding, but it just means we're business partners, okay?"

I couldn't help but roll my eyes in disbelief.

This elf really tends to jump to conclusions.

Or is it just a characteristic of elves?

"They really are a lovely couple, aren't they?"

 "Right?"

It seemed Lene didn't even hear Lana and Lena's words, as her eyes were swirling with confusion, and steam was coming out of her head.

* * *

After that, since we couldn't let the vegetables go to waste, I went to the merchant guild to explain the situation to Mr. Thor, who was shocked by what he saw.

We called for support and harvested the vegetables until evening, and by selling off what we didn't need, Lana and the others managed to secure a year's worth of income, even though it was still spring.
