Volume 1 Chapter 14 Seeking Ore Veins, We Magicians Venture into the Abandoned Mine
The rusted sword before me was easily deflected by the power of <Absolute>.
Conversely, I thrust my dagger into its vital point, and the goblin fell without a struggle.
However, the sheer volume of goblins is troublesome for a magician.
It was wise to have Lene carry the <Magic Stone of Diamond>.
"Well, up ahead is a fork in the road. If we go deeper, we should take the right, but there is a more open area to the left."
"Hmm, which way should we go?"
While responding to Lene, who was checking the map of the mine behind me, I continued to stab the advancing goblins.
There really are a lot of them.
Even though it's only been about a year since the Bern Mine became abandoned, they shouldn't have increased this much.
Should I assume a large group of goblins just happened to settle here?
With this many, it's a bit overwhelming, but thanks to the <Magic Stone of Diamond>, I can ignore their physical attacks, which is significant.
The goblin mages that occasionally appear are quickly dealt with, though.
"Well..., if I rely on the <Magic Power Detection> magic, it seems there are many goblins to the left."
"Then left it is. We also have a request to eliminate goblins."
"Understood."
Lene, quickly stashing away the map, joined in, and the goblins in the passage were swiftly taken care of.
Sure, she can't use magic powerful enough to defeat a dragon, but for her to be let go just because she's an Alchemist who can utilize so many different magics is simply foolish of Marie.
So, after finishing the cleaning of our new home, I had Lene make some soil improvement medicine, and after leaving Lana and the others in charge, we had come to the Bern mine, located about 3 days' walk from Sartzstadt.
Although we can't mine magic stones anymore, if we check thoroughly with detection magic, we might find new veins nearby, I explained to the guild master of the merchant guild and got permission to come here.
By the way, it seemed that there had been frequent incidents of goblins stealing livestock in the nearby village of Bern, so when I took the request, it turned out this mine was their base.
"Mr. Ryuuji, even Novice Spell has quite a bit of power, doesn't it?"
I've been driving away goblins not just with my dagger but also with the Novice Spell spell "Freeze Bullet," and it seems Lene was interested in the fact that my power was higher than that of a normal magician.
"Huh? Oh, this is thanks to my staff."
"A staff...? Is it some kind of ancient artifact?"
"No, no, this staff originally had decorative jewels on it, but since it would be a waste to just leave it as decoration, I applied the enhancement of 'Sage' to amplify the magic power."
"You can do something like that, huh..."
Lene was impressed and let out a sound of admiration.
Well, normally people wouldn't do that, but I do.
I'm only using the "Stone of Nothingness" because it doesn't cost anything, and jewels can be used for enhancements too.
"If you wish, should I apply an enhancement to Lene's staff as well? It has a jewel on it, right?"
"Oh, can you do that for me?"
"Understood, we'll decide what kind of enhancement later. ...Now then."
While having such a conversation, we arrived at the hall.
I wiped out the goblins, who were oblivious and sleeping, with Lene's favorite area magic, <Spark Web>.
I know a bit of area magic too, like <Fire Ball>, but I can't use explosive magic in a mine.
In that regard, Lene's lightning magic is quite handy.
I might ask her to teach me next time.
Since the defenseless goblins were taken care of, we decided to search the hall.
The <Stone of Nothingness> emits strong Magic Power, making it easy for a magician to sense.
But unfortunately, it seems there are no ore veins in the walls of this hall.
So this place is a bust too.
"...Huh? What?"
Hmm... I feel like Lene said this was a dead end...
While thinking about that, I stood still, staring at the path that continued deeper.
