Volume 2 Chapter 7-2 Stone Diviner Apprentice, Doing First Job
"Wow, so cute!"
"It seems Ellie is putting the jewels into a leather pouch, but isn't it cute to put them in something like this?"
"Yes! Thank you very much!"
The reason I was putting the jewels into the leather pouch was to protect my eyesight from the dazzling gems that were shining brightly enough to burn my retinas, but the teacher didn't know that.
While thinking about such things, I moved the jewels I took out from the leather pouch into the jewelry box.
They were so cute that my excitement was rising.
"Well then, Ellie, good luck with your first job!"
"Yes."
After parting ways with the teacher, some time passed, and a man, my first customer, arrived.
I was worried about being looked down upon because I was young, but as soon as he entered the room, he politely bowed his head.
"Thank you for today. I apologize for making unreasonable requests."
His very first words were also polite.
"It's my pleasure. Since I am still an apprentice, I may have some shortcomings, but I appreciate your understanding. Now, please take a seat."
The man and I sat facing each other across the table.
"Today, I would like to have you look into my daughter's marriage."
"Your daughter's marriage, I see."
As I said this, I drew a magic circle on the table.
First, I created magic circles for the man in front of me, his daughter, and her partner.
Then, I rolled the stones I took from the jewelry box onto them.
The jewels that rolled onto the man's magic circle and his daughter's magic circle formed a single straight pillar of light.
Since they shone in the same way, it seemed that the two of them had similar personalities.
The stones were also saying that he was a straightforward and honest person.
"Does your daughter have... 2 potential partners?"
Two jewels rolled onto the partner's magic circle, sparkling beautifully.
"Y-yes. She is struggling to decide between the two."
Originally, there were more candidates, but she had finally narrowed it down to these two recently.
According to the stones, both of them had no issues with their backgrounds or personalities.
They also said that marrying either of them would surely make her happy.
"My daughter says she is fine with either, but I feel it would be wrong for me to decide without understanding her feelings."
"I see."
I said this and rolled another jewel onto the daughter's magic circle.
And then he rolled a gem onto the man's magic circle.
The gem rolling on top of the man's magic circle sparkles brightly.
"...It seems that relying on your intuition is the way to go."
When I casually let that slip, the man's brow droops in disappointment.
"I said I wanted to hear your advice because I'm uncertain, yet you seem to push me away like this...!"
"Ah, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it that way. I'll explain step by step."
This was completely a mistake in my word choice.
Simply repeating the stone's words won't do.
I made him uneasy.
"Well, regarding your daughter, she seems to genuinely feel indifferent."
"Indifferent...? "
"Yes. Both of the two she's currently torn between are without flaws in family background, looks, or personality, so there seems to be nothing decisive. Her words of indifference are truly her honest feelings."
"S-so she genuinely feels indifferent..."
It seems he didn't expect her to really think that way at the core of her heart.
And I point to the gem shining in the man's magic circle.
"I haven't met these two, but both of them shine brilliantly without any dullness, so I believe they are very fine young men."
However, since the daughter's straightforwardness is strong, it seems she might end up wearing the pants in the marriage.
Should I convey that or keep it to myself...?
"So, going back to what I said earlier, you seem to have very sharp intuition."
"Intuition, you say?"
"Yes. That sharp intuition seems to be one of your innate talents."
"Now that you mention it... there have been many times when I felt it was right to act on instinct."
That makes sense.
The stone says that this person would be happier living by intuition alone.
"Thus, if you look at these two and choose the one you feel will make My daughter happy, she should be able to have a happy marriage."
"I see... both of them are compatible with my daughter, right?"
I nod vigorously in response to the man's question.
"Both have compatible personalities and seem to have ties from past lives."
The stone says that.
The stone can even see connections from past lives.
I didn't know that.
"Is it alright for me to choose?"
"Yes. If you choose someone you can trust with your daughter, it seems that your daughter and the whole family will surely be happy."
As he said this with a smile, he finally showed a relieved grin.
"Thank you. If I ever feel unsure again, I will come for advice."
The man said this as he left.
I hope he, his daughter, and the chosen partner find happiness.
The way the jewels rolled in the magic circle of his daughter reminded me of someone, but who could it be?
"Elena."
"Rolus. My first job is done."
Just as I stepped out of the room, Rolus was there, so I hugged him without reservation.
"Were you okay?"
"I'm fine. Just, I made one small mistake."
It was problematic that my choice of words made the man uneasy.
I knew I had to continue studying my word choices.
I showed a smile to Rolus, who peered into my face with concern.
"It's an everyday learning process."
When I said this, Rolus also smiled faintly and gently patted my head.
I don't know when the next job will be, but I will work hard to become a trusted stone diviner like the others.
The next day, with that determination, a lost little lamb would soon arrive at my place, though I had no way of knowing it then.
