Volume 2 Chapter 10 The Enchanted New Servant
My first job as a servant was at the home of the former Count's daughter, a future esteemed Count, and I was expected to live in, which felt rather overwhelming.
There was a time when I thought that!
I needed to earn money for my sick mother's medicine, so I was looking for a well-paying job.
At that time, I heard from a neighbor that working as a servant at a noble's house would earn me money, so I studied hard and practiced household chores.
My efforts were recognized, and I began working as an apprentice under an experienced servant.
Then, the experienced senior was moving to a new place, and I was to be hired not as an apprentice but as a servant alongside them.
However, I never expected to work at the home of the country's most renowned stone reader, a lady who was guaranteed the title of future esteemed Count.
I mean, I thought I would be working for someone of a lower rank.
After all, neighbors said high-ranking nobles were difficult and scary when angered, and I was just an apprentice until recently.
The thought of angering a noble and getting fired made it hard for me to sleep at night.
...But I did manage to sleep despite that feeling.
My first meeting with my employer, the gentleman and lady, was a million times more peaceful than I imagined.
"N-Nice to meet you, I'm Ilda, and I will be working here starting today!"
"Nice to meet you. I'm Elena, and this is my husband, Rolus."
Lady Elena seemed to be a gentle and easygoing person.
By the way, I only called them 'the gentleman' and 'the lady' at first; they asked me to call them by their names instead because it felt embarrassing, so now I call him Sir Rolus and Lady Elena.
The impression that high-ranking nobles are difficult and undoubtedly scary soon vanished.
Because Lady Elena turned out to be incredibly kind.
To say how kind this person is, they are the kindest I've ever met.
When I'm working, they tell me not to overdo it and invite me to take a break, or share snacks with me.
And then my senior, Carla, scolds me, saying, "Don't spoil Ilda."
Furthermore, there was an event that made me certain this person is genuinely kind.
One day, somehow the conversation turned to my mother being ill.
"Is Ilda's mother recuperating at home?"
"Yes."
"It was just you and your mother living together, right? Is she okay alone?"
"Right now, the neighbors are helping her."
"Hmm, is Ilda's home far from here?"
"It's not close."
Hearing my words, Lady Elena groaned and fell silent for a moment.
Then, when she finally spoke, she suggested something outrageous.
"How about we admit her to a hospital nearby?"
I would like to do that if possible, but it's impossible with my salary.
"That..."
"If it's nearby, Ilda can visit her, right?"
"I want to... but..."
"Alright, then it's settled."
"Huh, Lady Elena?"
"For now, I'll cover the initial costs. Then, you can pay me back a little from your monthly salary. How does that sound?"
When she said that, I was taken aback, and Sir Rolus sighed in exasperation.
I thought I would be scolded, but it seemed I wasn't the only one who thought that; Lady Elena did too.
"Because, Rolus, when you're unwell, it can feel lonely, right? And how painful it would be if she passed away while being apart..."
Lady Elena said this, and she looked like she might cry at any moment.
I wonder if she has lost someone important to her...?
"I don't mean to blame anyone. I just want you to stop rushing ahead since Ilda is confused. I'll prepare the documents for now."
Sir Rolus said that, and a few days later, he really prepared the documents.
And they really admitted my mother to the hospital in this neighborhood.
"The hospital fees will take years to pay back... but at least she can stay with Ilda during that time!"
Lady Elena said this with a genuinely happy smile.
At that moment, I thought I wanted to follow this person for the rest of my life.
After that, I called out to Sir Rolus.
"Lady Elena is such a kind person, isn't she?"
"Lady Elena has been very kind since she was young. No matter how hard she tries, she can't be mean even a little bit."
Not even a little bit.
