Volume 2 Chapter 9-2 Stone Diviner Apprentice, Opening a Letter

"If all goes well, we might be able to play together."

 "...yeah."

She understood that they couldn't play like we did as kids now that we had graduated from the academy, but if possible, I still wanted to spend time together.

Even if Rolus was giving me a look of disbelief right in front of me!

"I mean, we used to play together all the time when we were kids. It's sad that we can't do that anymore."

"I understand how you feel, but..."

"Still, I'm going to write a letter. I thought he hadn't contacted me because he was busy, but maybe he's not well!"

If he is unwell, then I must go visit him!

"Are you really planning to force a connection and barge into Sir Leve's mansion just to play?"

 He's figured it out...!

"No, I don't mean it like that."

"If you are truly unwell, even if you go in, there won't be any games to play."

"...then that would be a wasted trip."

"I don't dislike how you think of everything around games, Elena."

 "Thanks."

 "I wasn't complimenting you."

 Right.

"But really, thinking about how he might actually be unwell makes me worried. Even if I give up on the games, he should at least write a neutral letter."

If Leve is in trouble, I can help him out.

Leve has always been reserved, and I might not be able to ask for help even if he needs it.

If that's the case, then I felt I had to contact him directly, even if it meant being pushy.

And I thought it would be nice if we could play together while we were at it.

"Ah, I'm going to the teacher's mansion now, what about you, Elena?"

"Huh, I'm going too. The teacher should be on holiday today, but is it okay to go?"

 "I was called."

Both the teacher and I thought we were all a bit free today, but it turned out I was the only one with nothing to do.

The teacher had been advising a friend today.

That friend apparently runs a large candy shop and always brings back a lot of souvenirs when he comes here.

I was calling Rolus because of that share.

 "Hello."

When I arrived at the teacher's mansion, a servant greeted me.

Since the teacher's friend had already left, I decided to greet the teacher while I was there.

 "Mother-in-law, hello."

Today, I tried calling her "Mother-in-law" since it was a day off, and that choice might have been the right one.

The teacher, looking somewhat haggard, brightened up as soon as she saw our faces.

 "Are you tired, Mother-in-law?"

As I asked, the teacher placed her hand on her forehead and let out a big sigh.

"My friend... oh, right, since you both came together, how about some tea? I have plenty of sweets."

So, we ended up enjoying tea and sweets while listening to the teacher's story.

"I feel like this is the first time I've seen you so tired, Mother-in-law."

While enjoying the aroma of the tea prepared for us, I casually remarked, and the teacher tilted her head slightly, saying, "Is that so?"

"Well, you see, the topic of my friend's consultation was about her daughter's marriage..."

It's quite common to read fortunes about marriage, and I've been doing a lot of those lately, so I thought the teacher would be used to it.

What could be so exhausting for her?

"The person her daughter wants to marry is already involved with a common girl..."

 "Oh..."

It seems like a rather tough story is about to begin.

"Once it's confirmed that he's involved, I don't think they can have a happy marriage."

"Is it really that clear in the stone readings that he's involved with a common girl...?"

"No, even before the divination, I actually witnessed the scene."

Apparently, the teacher had seen the boy meeting with the common girl.

 Several times, in fact.

"So, this is the result of the divination, but it seems that if he gets married, he would likely brazenly keep that girl on the side."

 A mistress, huh.

Just like how bored noble ladies might have affairs, bored noble gentlemen tend to take mistresses and run off with them.

"So, I was thinking about how to stop my friend's daughter, who might still want to marry him, and that wore me out."

 Sounds like mental fatigue.

 Nobility is such a hassle.

"Speaking of which... since I'm currently only seeing happy marriages, should I also expect that there could be less favorable outcomes...?"

"Well, I think it's good to expect that, but... I believe all your friends are nice kids like you, so you should be fine until you start working seriously."

 "Nice kids, all of them."

Well, it's true that they are all nice kids.

"People tend to gather around similar kinds, you know."

 Like attracts like, huh?

That means, even the friends I haven't consulted yet might find happiness in the future.

As I thought about such things, I gently took a bite of the fluffy baked treat.
