Volume 1 Chapter 26 Dirty Blood
"Did you make him mad? You got a weak job class, and your father didn't like it, so he got mad, right?"
I thought that was a bit of a stretch, but when I pieced together everything that had been said so far, it kind of sounded that way.
However, Cosmos shook her head.
"To be precise, that's a bit off. In the first place, when my job class was revealed, he couldn't tell if it was strong or weak yet."
"Oh, right."
Seeing that I understood, Rose tugged at my sleeve again.
"Um, I'm really sorry to keep asking, but why can't we tell if this kid's job class is strong or weak at the point it was revealed?"
"Oh, right, I forgot that Rose didn't know Cosmos's job class."
I should have shown her Cosmos's Divine Revelation earlier.
I held back because I thought it might be rude to just show it without asking.
I glanced at Cosmos to see if it was okay to tell Rose, and she silently nodded.
Since the Divine Revelation I had received from Cosmos was already gone from my hands, I explained it verbally.
"I hadn't explained it to you, but Cosmos's job class is 'Stardust Magician'."
"'Stardust Magician?'."
"It's a job class I've never heard of either, and I bet everyone who saw Cosmos's Divine Revelation reacted just like you are now, Rose. So, at the initial stage, we couldn't tell anything about her strength or abilities."
"I-I see."
They say there are many people in the world with the same job class.
Famous job classes like 'Swordsman,' 'Sorcerer,' or 'Martial Artist' are well-known.
If it's a job class you've heard of, you can quickly gauge how powerful it is.
But with a rare job class like Cosmos's 'Stardust Magician,' it doesn't work that way.
At the stage when the job class was revealed, its strength and ability were still vague, and I wouldn't know how much power was hidden within until I tried to grow it.
So, it seems that her father didn't give up on her just because he found out her job class.
In fact, it was quite the opposite.
"My father had high hopes for me. My elder brother, who is 2 years ahead of me, also got a pretty decent job class, but my father was even more obsessed with my job class and went out of his way to raise me."
"Why go that far...?"
To be honest, Cosmos's job class is just rare.
It doesn't have particularly high divine blessing values, nor does it come with powerful skills or magic right from the start.
Even so, I couldn't quite understand why her father, who was all about job class superiority, was so invested in Cosmos.
Cosmos sipped her tea and explained the answer to my question.
"Have you ever heard the idea that the 'ability' of a job class is proportional to its 'rarity'?"
"Ability and rarity? Hmm, I feel like I've heard that somewhere..."
"It's a theory proposed by the researcher Jasman Bouti, who mainly studied job classes."
"Ah..."
I vaguely remembered something like that.
Just a faint recollection, but it was there.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Rose looking puzzled again, so I decided to give a simple explanation.
"To put it simply, it's the idea that 'the rarer the job class, the stronger the ability it holds'."
"The rarer the job class... Do you really think that idea holds true?"
"Honestly, no one really knows. Sure, it feels like rare job classes might have stronger abilities, but just because something is rare doesn't mean it's suited for battle."
Plus, the definition of "strength" is also vague.
Does it simply refer to combat ability, or does it also take into account the potential for generating economic benefits?
It's not a widely accepted idea, but Jasman's thoughts haven't really taken hold in society...
"There are definitely some people who agree with that idea, though. In some regions, back in the day, it seems like job classes were revered just for being rare, regardless of ability, and some even worshipped them as incarnations of gods."
"Y-Yeah, that feels a bit over the top..."
Anyway, it seems Cosmos's father had similar thoughts.
He had high hopes for Cosmos, who was born with a job class no one had ever heard of.
"...I think I'm starting to understand why Cosmos got kicked out of her home."
"Well, with all this information, it's pretty clear. I was expected by my dad. He did everything he could to raise me. And in the end, what I turned out to be was..."
"...'a magician who can only throw stones'."
I received a sharp glare from Cosmos.
I mean, it was like she was asking me to say that.
As I silently complained about it, Cosmos's expression darkened again as she continued.
"Because the expectations were so high, when my dad found out I could only throw stones, he was incredibly disappointed in me. And that disappointment hit me hard."
"Is that why you got kicked out?"
"Yeah. 'We don't want dirty blood,' he said. I was looked down on by the rest of the family, and my position changed overnight."
"..."
I didn't know what to say to Cosmos, who spoke with a self-deprecating tone.
I understood that getting kicked out wasn't just about the job class.
But in the end, it was still unreasonable.
Her dad had placed expectations on her and then was disappointed all on his own.
Cosmos hadn't done anything wrong.
She couldn't choose her job class, and just because of good bloodlines, it didn't mean she'd definitely get a high-ability job class.
More than anything, there was no sign of Cosmos's own will in this story at all.
Realizing once again how unreasonable this all is, I secretly felt a pang in my heart, but surprisingly, Cosmos showed a positive attitude.
"So, I got kicked out of my parents' house, and now I'm thinking of becoming an adventurer to show that stupid parent of mine!"
"Y-you're going to show them by becoming an adventurer?"
"I heard that if you become a top-ranking adventurer, you might even get invited to the court as a royal guard. And if you become a royal guard, you're basically at the Baron level. From there, I can break into the political scene and somehow get back at that stupid dad of mine."
The story about the royal guards that I had just remembered comes up.
It's true that if you excel as a top-ranking adventurer, you might be invited to the court because of your skills.
And I've heard that if you achieve something significant, getting promoted isn't just a dream.
It seems Cosmos wants to get back at her family that gave up on her.
"Hmm..."
Honestly, I think it's a pretty tough situation.
I mean, can she really pull that off? I don't know much about politics, but just becoming a top-ranking adventurer is a huge hurdle.
Getting called to the court from there is already a rare case, and climbing the ranks to somehow get revenge on her family seems difficult.
It feels like trying to grasp at clouds.
Plus, how exactly she plans to get back at her family is pretty vague.
Well, if she has extraordinary talent like Rose, who's right in front of me, then maybe her ambitions could be grounded in reality.
For now, I understood Cosmos's wish.
"...Got it. So, is your goal to aim for becoming a top-ranking adventurer?"
"I don't want to trouble you too much, and I don't plan on staying in this town forever. For now, let's just agree that you'll help me until the next promotion exam. I think my level will go up quite a bit, and from there, I'll try to aim for becoming a top-ranking adventurer on my own."
"Alright, it's a deal then!"
Despite all the worries swirling in my mind...
this is how I ended up helping Stardust Magician Cosmos as my first job as a Nurturer.
