Volume 1 Chapter 25 The Magician Of Pebbles
After finishing my match with Cosmos, I'm back at my place.
Thanks to Rose, I finally got Cosmos to recognize my power as a Nurturer.
So now, it's time to get into the real talk about the request.
I decided to head back home again, but Ms. Terra seemed to have an early morning tomorrow, so she left right after watching the match.
Just as she was leaving, Rose came along to my house.
On the way back, I took the chance to explain the current situation to Rose in detail.
She looked a bit confused, but she seemed really happy that her first job as a Nurturer was coming up.
"Alright, so I'm going to help Cosmos grow, but..."
I made some fresh tea and decided to get into the specifics of the job.
"First off, can I ask what Cosmos's goal is?"
"Goal?"
"More like, what's the end point? Like, what level do you want to reach, or what rank of adventurer do you want to become? I think it's better to know that from the start."
It's way more efficient to have a clear goal for growth rather than just helping vaguely.
When I helped Rose, it was super easy because she had the clear goal of becoming a 'Rank 4 Adventurer'.
If I could at least get an idea of what level Cosmos wants to reach, it would make things a lot easier for me too.
"By the way, why does Cosmos want to become an adventurer? Ms. Terra mentioned you were trying to take on tough quests without teaming up with anyone..."
I asked something that had been on my mind for a while.
Cosmos, struggling with the hot tea I just brewed, started to explain her reason.
"It's not a very exciting story. I got kicked out of my family home and had no way to make a living, so I just became an adventurer because it was convenient."
"Kicked out?"
That sounded a bit serious.
"My family is the Count Noir family, and my father is a lord in this Compost Kingdom."
"Wait? So, Cosmos is Count's daughter and a lady?"
"Yeah, that's right."
I thought she was just a cheeky little girl based on her looks and personality.
As I looked at Cosmos with a suspicious glare, she proudly puffed out her modest chest and said.
"I'll allow you to call me Lady Cosmos from now on."
"But you got kicked out of your house, right?"
"Ugh...! Y-yeah, that's true..."
With a calm remark, Cosmos's chest deflated.
Plus, she looked like she was about to cry, her lonely expression making her quietly clench her fists on the table.
"I'm not allowed to call myself a child of the Count Noir family anymore. I can't even step over the threshold of my home."
"W-what happened? Getting disowned at your age...?"
It's not uncommon to hear about someone getting kicked out of their house, but Cosmos looks like she's still a teenager.
She even looks younger than that...
It's pretty strange to kick out a girl instead of a boy.
Unless there's a really good reason, it seems impossible...
"Could it be that you did something really terrible...?"
"Don't just assume I'm a criminal! I didn't do anything wrong!"
Cosmos's sharp voice echoed through the house.
Then, with a sulky expression, she opened her right hand and chanted.
"[Show me Divine Revelation]."
Even though her attitude didn't seem like she was asking a god for something, Divine Revelation appeared right in her hand.
It manifested as a rolled-up parchment, which Cosmos carelessly tossed over to me.
It was so sudden that I almost dropped it, but I managed to catch it properly.
Cosmos was looking at me like she was saying, "Look at this," so I opened it up to check the contents.
[Job Class] Stardust Magician
[Level] 15
[Skill] Spell Chanting
[Magic] Meteor Magic
[Divine Blessing]
- Strength: F80
- Agility: E120
- Resilience: F50
- Magic: D250
- Holy Power:E150
Well, this is the Divine Revelation I saw with the Divine Eye skill.
I haven't told Cosmos about what I peeked at, so she probably handed it over thinking I didn't know.
So, as I was unsure how to react, Cosmos once again wore a sad expression and said.
"The reason I was kicked out is because of this 'job class'."
"'Job class'? Are you talking about this Stardust Magician job class?"
Even thinking back, it's a job class I've never heard of.
For a magician job class, it has pretty weak abilities, and it's full of mysteries.
Could this really be the reason she got kicked out of her home?
"What do you honestly think after seeing this Divine Revelation?"
"..."
Am I being tested or something?
I couldn't help but think that, so I cautiously asked back.
"Y-you won't get mad if I say it honestly, right?"
"You asked me to say it, so there's no way I'd get mad. Just hurry up and say it."
"Um, well... honestly, I think it's super weak."
I felt a sharp tension in Cosmos's forehead.
But that was all, and she let out a long sigh, as if to release her anger.
I was relieved that she managed to hold it together, but Cosmos continued, her anger showing on her face.
"Yeah, anyone can see my job class is weak. I know that well enough myself. Even at this level, all my divine blessings are at the lowest tier, and there's no sign of getting stronger. My magic is plain and has no versatility; it's a completely weak job class."
Cosmos poured out all her frustrations.
I thought about it when we sparred, but her job class really is pitifully weak.
It's understandable that the strong-willed Cosmos would become self-deprecating.
"Because I got stuck with such a 'bad' job class, I was kicked out of the Noir Count family."
"Wait, wait a minute. Just because you got a weak job class, you're getting kicked out of your house?"
Suddenly, I jumped in with my thoughts.
Kicked out just for having a bad job class?
That seems really unfair...
"I'm, you know, from a family that's famous for getting strong job classes. With the divine blessing of powerful job classes, we've protected our territory from invasions and monster attacks, while also showing strength to our people. I mean, this country really values job classes and actively favors families like ours."
"Well, there's a saying that whether you get a good job class or not depends a lot on your bloodline. They say they also put effort into raising those with strong job classes."
"Our family is one where that's even more obvious."
If that's the case, it wouldn't be surprising if Cosmos got kicked out.
The Stardust Magician clearly has a weak job class.
It wouldn't be strange for parents with such extreme views to give up on their child.
Though, it does seem a bit over the top, so there might be other reasons too.
As I was thinking that, I suddenly felt a gentle tug on my sleeve.
Looking over, I saw Rose with a worried expression, furrowing her brows.
"W-What's wrong, Rose?"
"I didn't quite understand something from that story. What do you mean by whether you get a good job class depends a lot on your bloodline?"
"Well, you see, job classes are powers that the gods give you from birth, right? But it's been said for a long time that the quality of job classes, or their strength, is inherited through bloodlines. In reality, people born into good families usually get pretty strong job classes."
"R-Really?"
Descendants of those with strong job classes are also given strong job classes by the gods.
That's something I've heard often.
Of course, there are people who disagree with that idea, and in some countries, they strongly argue that "God treats everyone equally".
But in this Compost kingdom, it's often the case that those with good bloodlines get better job classes.
That's a fact that strengthens the country and influences many areas, and right now, those kinds of families are favored.
Well, there are also some people who, regardless of their lineage, receive extraordinary job classes.
Like Rose, who's right in front of me.
And then there's the hero, Dahlia.
To bring such talented individuals into politics, sometimes a top-tier adventurer gets invited to the court as a royal guard.
"Maybe if you trace back Valkyrie Rose's family line, you might end up with some incredible political figure."
"Eh!?"
Well, that probably won't happen.
Rose feels more like an extraordinary being that appeared out of nowhere.
She possesses a supernatural power that's way beyond just a job class that manifested because of her bloodline.
Anyway, I could somewhat guess the reason Cosmos was kicked out of her home.
But still, it seems a bit unreasonable.
"It feels a bit extreme to be kicked out just because you got a weak job class..."
"Well, most of the reason is because of the job class, but of course, if that was the only reason, it wouldn't have gone as far as being kicked out."
So then why? I wondered, and Cosmos answered again with a sad expression.
"The main reason I was expelled from the Count Noir family was that I made my father angry."
