Volume 9 Chapter 7 City's Three Regions
Kyrie walked alongside me, saying, "First, let me introduce these two to you☆."
"This huge guy over here is Gand! He's got giant blood in him, and he's super huge♪."
"Nice to meet you. My leader, Kyrie, at your service."
The one who bowed his head was a large man with scales on his cheeks, easily over 3 meters tall (≈9.8 feet tall). Huge.
"And this wolf girl is Lillu! Her fluffy body is her charm point ♪."
"Gya! Leader, stop hugging me out of the blue!"
Kyrie was hugging a wolf-like humanoid with a fluffy coat, who looked like a terrified girl.
"And I'm Kyrie, the leader of the renowned circus troupe 'Klainatzirks' that will conquer the famous circus ☆!"
Kyrie struck a pose, giving us a confident look. The other 2 also took poses beside Kyrie, looking a bit embarrassed.
"Thanks. I'm Wade, and this is Ice."
"N-nice to meet you... ."
The two of them greeted us. The 3 members of Klainatzirks responded with "Nice to meet you ☆", "Nice to meet you", and "Nice to meet you too..."
Well, the greetings were done. I raised a question there.
"Circus?"
"Yeah, circus."
"...?"
"...?"
The two of them gave me a questioning look. I asked again.
"What's with the circus? You said something about a big framework or something."
"Ah, I see. You don't know because you're new. The term 'circus' refers to the region's story ☆."
Kyrie said it with a playful tone, as if accompanied by a "kapip ☆" sound effect.
"The city is divided into 3 regions, you see. There's the commercial district, the entertainment district, and the residential district, and so on ☆. But this is just a difficult way of calling it, thought up by the Demon King's army~..."
Kyrie laughed while holding up 3 fingers to explain to us.
"Bazaar, Circus, Slum! That's how the demons living in this city call each region! If you understand these 3 regions, you can say you understand the city at the very least ☆."
Hmm, that's what I think. I wanted to know that kind of straightforward information. For us who don't know anything, this kind of common sense talk is the most welcome.
"First off, this place! The area Kyrie and the others are walking in is called the 'Bazaar'! It's a place where you can get anything as long as you have money. A huge market where desires swirl around!'
I repeat 'Bazaar' in my mouth.
"And, as I said earlier, the 'Circus' refers to the entertainment district next door. A place where you can't buy emotions and pleasures with money! If you want to have fun, come here!"
The meaning of Kyrie's words from earlier starts to sink in.
In other words, it's a small circus team trying to make a name for themselves in the entertainment district.
"Finally, there's the Residential District, also known as the Slum. It's basically a place where people live... but the reality is different."
"What do you mean?"
"Unlike the Bazaar, where people do business, and the Circus, where people perform arts, the Slum has something else. Instead of those things, there's a desire that can't be shown on the surface. In short, if you want to get rid of someone who's in the way, everyone goes to the Slum."
I nod, "Ah, I see." That makes sense.
"Is it an assassination business?"
"Yeah, but it's not just about killing. It's about elimination, so you need a lot of money. But if you make a request, the person will really disappear. That's the kind of request that gathers in the Slum."
That makes sense, I think. This city of demons where killing doesn't mean much, but making someone disappear has a much bigger meaning.
So, Kyrie, who was trying to intimidate me, suddenly changes her attitude.
"...I thought so, but Wade probably has a lot more experience with that kind of thing, so he's probably okay with it ☆"
"Hey"
I glance at Kyrie, who's saying "Sorry, sorry ☆" with a hand gesture. What a shameless guy.
Anyway, getting this important information is a big deal.
Bazaar, Slum, Circus.
If I can get information about these 3 areas and the Tower that protects the Demon King's Castle, I can make a plan to conquer the city below the Demon King's Castle.
"Thanks, Kyrie. And I have one more question..."
"Whoa, you didn't expect this information to be free, did you? ☆."
Kyrie nails me with a piercing stare, and I'm like "Uh..." trying to get my words out.
"...What's going on? Are you serious? Are you trying to mess with me?"
"Come on, Wade! You're not gonna do something stupid, are you? Kyrie wants to have a good relationship with you, that's all! ☆."
"...So what's the point?"
"Wade, you're gonna take all the info you want from Kyrie and friends, and then just leave, right? That's not how it works! We need to work together, build trust, and benefit each other!"
I'm left speechless. So it's all about a win-win situation, huh? That means I shouldn't just take what I want without giving anything back.
"Got it. Let's get started then. We can discuss the details later."
"Yeah, that's the spirit! You're really strong for a newbie. You don't have any backing, after all."
I do have backing, but that's a secret. I'm just a innocent newbie, yeah.
"So, what do I need to do?"
"Ah, you're really listening! Kyrie and the Klainatzirks need money and trust to put on a show! ."
As a demon circus, they need money to put on a show, and trust to ensure people will come. I nod and urge them to continue.
"And, we got a request from a rich guy at Bazaar to take care of something. It seems like today's job is gonna be tough with just 3 people, yeah? ☆."
"I see."
Ice and I exchange a glance. Right now, our goal is to gather info, so we don't want to stand out too much. But if we can fight a bit, these 3 might be able to cover for us.
...Cover for us, huh? That's not a bad idea. I'll remember that.
"So, what exactly do we need to do?"
When I ask, Kyrie says,
"There's this super valuable item in a certain warehouse, and the owner says 'A hundred slum thieves are coming to steal it, so take them all out'."
"...I see."
I think to myself, "This guy's asking for something crazy on our first meeting, what's up with that?"
