Volume 9 Chapter 8 The First Job In The City
"Here's the warehouse!"
Kyrie led me to a massive warehouse located deep in the alleyways.
As we entered, I saw a vast array of antiques lined up. Ice whispered, "...there are incredibly valuable artifacts here..." which made me think this must be a treasure trove.
"And, this is the valuable item ☆ don't touch it! If you even slightly damage it, Kyrie and the others will be ensl*ved!"
What she introduced was a wolf statue.
It was a ferocious, wolf-like statue. Speaking of which, I remembered that the city had an enormous statue, and so on.
"Is this what we need to protect? What about the others? Aren't they valuable artifacts too?"
"The others are all fakes ☆ but there are artifacts that would be painful to lose, though they pale in comparison to this one, so don't worry about it ☆."
Ice looked stunned, saying "...!". It seemed that even items treated with great care on the surface were considered fake. As a merchant's daughter, she was sensitive to such subtleties.
"I get it. It's better not to break the fakes either, right? Then, I'll just prepare myself by climbing up to the roof or something."
"I think that's a good idea! Do as you like☆ Kyrie and the others have their own way of doing things, and Wade and the others have their own way too, right?"
Kyrie told me, and I nodded, saying "Yeah, that's right." It seemed I understood pretty well. At the very least, she had the strength to dodge my punches.
"Do you know when the attack will come?"
"I've heard it'll be soon☆ so hurry up! Get to your post!"
"Got it."
We were urged on, so we left Kyrie and the others from the Klainatzirks, carrying Ice up to the roof. Then, we saw a massive structure in the sky.
"Ah, that's it. That's the one."
"Wade-kun...?"
"I remembered it when I saw the statue. You know, when we entered the city, I thought there was a huge statue..."
Ice looked up, following my gaze. "Wow...!" she exclaimed.
"Whoa... That's a huge snake, isn't it...?"
―――It was a gigantic snake statue.
Its height was probably over a hundred meters. Its total length would be several hundred meters, a gigantic snake statue.
"What was this? Mudi mentioned its name in passing, didn't he?"
"Yeah... I think it was 'World Snake Jormungand' or something..."
I nodded in agreement with Ice's words.
World Snake Jormungand. A monster said to be related to the goddess Hel, not the Demon King Hel.
This world, Silvashearl, has a connection to the previous world... Earth. Greek mythology and the like exist across countries.
In that sense, this world belongs to the Norse mythology sphere. So, if you know Norse mythology, it's easier to understand the history and circumstances.
"I only mentioned it casually back then. I should ask Mudi again."
"Yeah... You need knowledge of mythology to defeat gods, after all...!"
Ice also seemed to agree. There's also the fact that Demon King Hel and Ice's magic, ice magic, have the same goddess Hel. It's hard to think they're unrelated, and it's better to arm ourselves with knowledge.
Anyway, let's focus on our work for now. As I thought that and closed my mouth, Ice also held her breath and summoned an ice bird on her hand.
"I won't summon the ice soldiers, okay? The ice bird alone is strong enough, so..."
"Yeah, that's right. It's better not to show off our true strength. I'll only use a part of my magic to fight too. The 3 from Klainatzirks are one thing, but I don't want the enemy demons to notice."
As I said that, Ice stared at me intently.
"...What's wrong?"
"Wade-kun, do you think those 3 are trustworthy...?"
"Eh, ...can't we trust them?"
When I said that, Ice shook her head with a stern expression.
"You can't trust demons, okay...? Kyrie-san is especially untrustworthy, I think."
"Why's that?"
"...Because they're too kind, that's why. Demons don't need to be that kind to humans. I've never seen a demon that's as kind as they are, and it's suspicious."
"..."
I fell silent. Indeed, aside from the villagers in Bael's territory who tried to deceive me from the start, I have a memory of them immediately baring their fangs at me.
Compared to other demons, I might have let my guard down because we could have a decent conversation. I said to Ice.
"Yeah, that's right. We can't trust them yet. Thanks for keeping me on my toes."
"Uh-uh... That's obvious, isn't it?"
"Yeah, I always get helped by Ice―――."
Ice and I simultaneously shut our mouths.
"They're here."
"Uh-huh..."
I exchanged a brief glance with Ice, and we rushed to the edge of the roof with her ice bird.
Looking down, I saw that, just as Kyrie said, nearly a hundred demons had formed a group and were surrounding the warehouse.
"Hmm... What's going on? These demons are a bit stronger than usual... If we're going to wipe them out, we'll need to..."
I had no Chakra, no Durandal, and only gravity magic was available. However, I could only cast magic on up to 3 people at a time. The rest would have to be taken care of with martial arts.
"Alright, let's go with the stronger demons... Here we go!"
I jumped off the roof with a loud shout. I used "Point Shift" magic to target the source of gravity and "Weight Increase" to increase the weight.
Now, let's blow them away.
"WRAAAAHHH!"
My shout, along with my fist, turned the 3 demons around me into bloody mist. The surrounding demons let out a collective shriek.
I let out a loud roar.
"Welcome, thieves! I'll kill you all and plant trauma in your minds before sending you back home!"
I laughed, covered in blood. Even demons were intimidated by my appearance.
Demons, after all, were originally human. At their core, they were human. So, if there's someone who's genuinely scary, they'll naturally be intimidated. Even if they can revive, that won't change.
On the other hand, Klainatzirks was surprised in a different direction.
"Wahahahahahaha☆ This is amazing Wade, you're awesome☆ This is all thanks to Kyrie's guidance, isn't it!? This is the best team selection ever!"
"Uh-oh... I, I mean, this isn't the time to be scared. Everyone, let's go We'll back Wade up Follow Wade!"
"Eh, that's completely an enemy, right! It's ridiculous that they're on our side! Geez!"
Kyrie bursts into laughter, Gand overcomes his fear, and Lillu rushes in with a flustered look. The 3 of them charge into the group, each taking down their petrified enemies.
I'm taking down the enemies in front of me with my bare hands, while keeping an eye on Klainatzirks' movements.
Kyrie is able to shoot fire from their hands. But what's more impressive is their ability to dodge attacks, effortlessly evading every strike and counterattacking.
Gand, the giant with scales on his cheeks, is using his massive body to mow down enemies. Lillu is quickly dashing between enemies, slicing them with her claws.
As demons, they seem to possess exceptional combat abilities, capable of taking down a hundred enemies on their own. It's like they could reach a hundred kills even without us, that's how strong they are.
But we also need to gather information, so we can't slack off. We have to do our best.
"Ice!"
As I call out the name, the ice bird freezes the demon behind me. I turn around and punch, shattering the demon into pieces.
"Huu♪ Wade's doing it! What's with that ice and bird?!"
"It's Ice. She's pretty strong too."
"No way! You 2 are like seasoned veterans!☆."
Before I know it, Kyrie, who's been killing enemies left and right, is standing back-to-back with me. Ice, who was hiding on the roof, shouts, "Half left...!"
"Liar! Already!? Wade, how many did you kill!?"
"I'll reach 30 soon! Object Weight Increase!"
I use Weight Increase on the 3 enemies in front of me, immobilizing them, and then kick them in half.
I deflect an enemy attacking from the side with "Repulsion!", and then stomp on them, finishing them off with a punch to the head.
I gather the 3 enemies with "Object Point Shift!" and turn them into a ball, using it as a projectile to take down more enemies.
As I do so, the weak demon enemies start falling one by one. Finally, the last one! I throw the demon ball at it.
But that one uses an axe to split the ball, which was created by the 3 of us, in 2.
"Whoa, the last one's a real monster!"
The "Unparalleled Time" has ended, and I can't help but laugh. Klainatzirks' Gand and Lillu are saying, "Is this the last one...?" "Wade's too strong, isn't he? What's with that guy!"
The final enemy is a real demon, with a terrible aura.
It has cow-like horns and a muscular body, about 2 meters tall (≈6.6 feet) and imposing. It's staring us down, axe in hand.
The cow-horned demon says,
"Heh! My minions are all wiped out. I've never heard of a strong enemy like you showing up!"
"Life's no fun if it goes according to plan, right?"
"You're pretty full of yourself... Heh, whatever. Since you've made it this far, you won't be leaving with your head intact!"
The cow-horned demon takes a stance, axe held high. Their breath touches the outside air, turning white. The inside of their clothes starts to glow faintly.
Sorcery.
I, on the other hand, take a defensive stance against the cow-horned demon. At the same time, I strengthen my Repulsion.
Kyrie is whispering to me from beside me.
"Be careful, Wade. That demon is a new, top-notch one from the Slums. Their sorcery is―――."
"Ah, don't worry about it. No spoilers allowed."
"Huh?"
I cut off Kyrie's warning.
I'm a seasoned veteran, too. If I know what's coming, I can handle it. That's what they mean by "going according to plan." I don't need any boring spoilers.
The cow-horned demon takes a step forward. The cold air wraps around their axe. The glow of the runes on their body reaches their peak.
"Take this, ――― Blizzard Axe!"
The axe swings down, covered in a thick layer of ice. It's become a massive axe, closing in on me.
But that's not all. The cold air turns into tiny ice shards, constructing a deadly storm that kills everything it touches in the turbulent airflow.
The nearby demon corpses are frozen, shattered by the fierce wind. Even the freezing winds of Nilfheim are frozen, scattering snow crystals.
Such a fierce attack is about to crush me, trying to cut me down with one blow.
But it stops right in front of my eyes, frozen in place.
"...what, where...!?"
The cow demon stares at me with its eyes wide open. I smile and ask, "What's wrong? Can't handle this?"
"Guh...! O, oh, you... How did you...this...!"
"If this is all you've got, then I'll finish you off right here. Your destructive power was decent, but it's not enough to break my Repulsion."
I take a step forward, and the axe is deflected, causing the ox demon to stumble back.
I simply wave my hand from top to bottom in front of it.
"But, it was fun to watch, though."
The cow demon is crushed to the ground by my repulsive force, their body shattered and lifeless.
"...whoa, wow!☆"
Behind me, Kyrie lets out a small voice. I turn around and smile, asking, "Is that it?"
