Chapter 30 The Big Event
"What's up with you guys――"
I called out to the red-haired woman who they said stole money from adventurer group as she came out of the orphanage.
"Yeah, Adel, she smells like the clients. I'm sure."
"Okay, got it."
Teti smelled the perfume the woman was wearing.
She looked like the description the clients gave us, so she was probably the one who stole the money.
"Excuse me for a sec."
"Grr――"
Maia quietly went behind the red-haired woman, blocking her way out.
"You don't seem like a kidnapper. What do you want from me?"
"I have a question for you. Why did you take money from the adventurer group?"
"I see, I get it now. You must be hired by the adventurers. But sorry, I can't afford to get caught."
The red-haired woman quickly looked at me and Maia behind me. Then, she ran towards Maia.
"Move! Get out of my way!"
To others, Maia looked like a maid in a uniform.
She thought she could escape better by going towards Maia instead of facing me.
"I'm certainly no where near as good as that person, but..."
"Huh...!"
Maia easily blocked the woman's attack and twisted her arm, making her stop.
"Ggh, let go...!"
"Will you let go if I ask, or will you stay?"
"...Okay."
The red-haired woman realized she couldn't escape due to her attack and defense, and she gave up.
Maia smiled and let her go.
"I'll release you now."
"You have that much strength... are you sure the man is stronger with your skills?"
"Yes! Definitely!"
"Don't say that with such a big smile."
The red-haired woman looks really tired and collapses.
Teti beside me was tense earlier, but now she seems relaxed. Now, I'm sure she wouldn't try to run away anymore.
I use my special ability to check the red-haired woman's score.
====================
Subject: Reisha Granbell
Execution coefficient: 313 points
====================
――It's still low...
Even though she steals a lot of money, her score isn't high.
I want to ask her something first.
So, I step forward and look up at Reisha.
"Are you the Black-Robed Executor? What are you going to do with me?"
"Reisha Granbell. I want to talk to you."
"Why do you know my real name... Have we met somewhere before?"
I saw it.
By using the Executor job ability to visually target, along with the Execution Coefficient, the name can also be confirmed.
--And also, two years ago...
Let's put that aside for now.
"Okay. So? Do you want me to give you back the money I stole?"
"No, I know you don't have the money anymore. You gave it to the director of that orphanage, right?"
"Huh...! You, if――"
"Hey, calm down. I'm not going to interfere with that orphanage. What I want to know is why Reisha stole the money."
"The reason...?"
"Yeah"
I know that Reisha was seen giving the stolen money to the director of the orphanage.
However, there was something I didn't understand. I want to confirm that first.
"...I stole the money to help the orphanage."
"Help the orphanage? Is that why?"
"Yes. The children at the orphanage are very poor. So, I need to take money there."
Reisha looked at me with determination.
"The children at the orphanage struggle to live with just old bread and weak soup. If they can't earn money, things will get worse."
"The goal is good, but the way you did it is not right."
"I know."
I understand how Reisha feels.
When faced with a tough situation, I also learned that ideals alone aren't enough to survive.
"But if I'm gone, the children and Marianne-sensei won't manage. So, I'm asking you to forgive me."
"..."
Reisha's eyes show she's not lying.
She's not making up excuses to avoid something.
Considering Reisha's low Execution Coefficient, her reasons are probably true.
She has to do whatever it takes to save the poor orphanage. That's why she wants forgiveness.
I get where Reisha is coming from, but...
――It's weird that Reisha has to steal to help the orphanage.
I've been secretly supporting the orphanage through Fran, the informant, every month.
It all started from feeling guilty after being exiled and not being able to keep my promise to save the orphanage two years ago.
But now, something strange is happening.
I trust Fran to deliver the money I give, so there should be enough for the orphanage.
Yet, Reisha says the orphanage is struggling to survive.
If that's true, what happened to the money I gave...?
I was unsure whether to explain the contradiction when suddenly,
"――! Adel!"
Teti shouted out of the blue.
"I smell something burning from the orphanage...!"
"What's that smell...?"
Teti probably sensed the burning smell with her keen beastman sense of smell.
The orphanage was on fire... which meant――.
"Reisha, come with us!"
"Huh――"
We all rushed towards the orphanage.
Soon, we could see the orphanage up ahead――,
"Oh no...!"
We saw the orphanage engulfed in flames――.
