Chapter 29 [Side Reisha Granbell] The Thief Seeks Redemption
"Reisha, are you leaving already?"
As night fell, I tried to sneak out of the orphanage without the children noticing, but Marianne-sensei stopped me.
"Yes, I had fun eating with everyone. I can't stay too long though."
"Sorry, Reisha. If only I could help more, you wouldn't have to go through this..."
"It's okay. Marianne-sensei is busy taking care of the children. All of them are still requiring a lot of attention, so it can't be helped."
Marianne-sensei took us in and raised us like a real mother.
Even though I've left the orphanage, my feelings for her remain the same, and I think the other children feel the same way too.
"It would be nice if the royal family members would listen to us again. ...Oh, maybe Marianne-sensei wants to show Meek's job skills to the royal family?"
"..."
"Sensei?"
"...Huh? Oh, right... We need to check Meek's job skills, but if we go to the royal family, I plan to ask for money to help this orphanage."
"I understand..."
I still think it will be tough, I'm thinking.
――Two years ago, our orphanage was supposed to get help from the royal family.
The seventh prince at that time - maybe named Adel Vandale - visited our orphanage, learned about our situation, and promised to save the orphanage after telling the royal family about it.
We were all happy, believing the orphanage would be saved.
However, there were rumors that person had been exiled out of the royal family, and the story was left unfinished.
If it's a wish that can't come true, it's just in the way.
I know I was being selfish back then.
But at that moment, I realized I had to take action myself.
Luckily, it seems I was quite good-looking.
Everyone at the orphanage praised me, and spending time together with everyone was much more important to me.
Because of that, I could join different adventurer groups.
Even if it meant stealing from others, the people at the orphanage meant more to me.
"Sorry, Marianne-sensei. I'm leaving now. I might not be back for a while, so please take care of the children."
"...Okay, Reisha. Stay safe."
I felt like I might bother Marianne-sensei with my thoughts if I stayed longer, so I quickly decided to leave.
As I walked out of the orphanage gate, I looked up at the sky.
The nice breeze made me realize it had been a while since I saw the stars.
――I need to find a new group of adventurers to join. And maybe steal some money again...
I walked and thought to myself.
――How long should I keep doing this...
I felt guilty and selfish.
I know what I'm doing is wrong.
I know I can't play the victim.
But deep down, I seek redemption, and that realization made me feel really bad.
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't notice the person in the alley's shadow and startled at their voice.
"――Hey, can I talk to you for a moment?"
There was a man wearing black robe.
