Volume 1 Chapter 17 The Art of Bestowal and Alchemy are Similar, Lene-kun
About a minute of escaping upward from the approaching cold air.
As I expected, the path led to another exit, and we emerged halfway up the mountain.
The sunlight I hadn't seen for hours was dazzling.
"Huh...? So there was an exit here as well..."
Lene, who doesn't have much stamina, was panting and surprised.
I've thought this for a while, but it seems this elf struggles with physical activities.
Maybe I should teach her some martial arts to train her up.
"I saw light and felt the wind, so I thought it might be possible, but it turns out it was connected here due to an earthquake. I smell sulfur. Is there a volcano nearby?"
"That's right, the southern part of the Beistein Kingdom has many volcanoes. That's probably why there was a major earthquake."
I hear volcano regions are related to earthquakes.
My hometown, Sakura, was the same way.
"By the way, Mr. Ryuuji. What was that cold air earlier?"
Lene, her breathing settled, asked with great curiosity.
Her reaction is more like that of a magician or a craftsman.
I guess it's an appropriate reaction to say.
"That was the power of the <Magic Stone of Permafrost> that I showed when we decided to head to Sartzstadt in Behemar. If activated, it can freeze and kill with a strong cold air along with light. It's pretty subtle but incredibly powerful enchanted magic stone."
Once activated, it freezes an area of several dozen meters around. It's my second treasured creation.
I used it already, so it has lost its power.
"<Extreme Cold>... you say. If it's pure Magic Power, won't it be ineffective against the Goblin Hero?"
"Ah, Lene. You probably misunderstand enchantment."
The art of enchantment is indeed based on magic, but its power appeals to the laws of nature to bring about effects.
It's more accurate to say it's a technique that applies the power of nature rather than just magic.
As for the "Magic Stone of Permafrost," it accumulates the surrounding natural power over time, and the longer it has been created, the more cold air it releases.
The one I used earlier was made over a year ago.
The extent of its effect is something you can easily guess.
And unlike the "Magic Stone of Diamond," which is a 'sustaining type,' this 'activation type' magic stone loses its power after use, but can be used again once it accumulates natural power.
When I explained this, Lene moved her long ears up and down with interest.
So cute.
"I see... even though it's part of magic, it uses the power of nature... it might be similar to alchemy..."
"Right?"
Alchemy is also part of magic, but its essence relies heavily on the power of materials.
Both enchantment and alchemy are merely mediums that invoke Magic Power.
"Well then, it's about time to head back. We need to exterminate the remaining goblins."
"Huh? Isn't it frozen inside? If we go in now, we might freeze to death too."
To the anxious Lene, I handed over a magic stone.
"What's this?"
"It's a 'Magic Stone of Normal Temperature' As long as you hold it, it will keep your body temperature stable. Once we confirm the goblin hero is dead, we can use the 'Magic Stone of Heat Wave' to disperse the cold air instead."
"You have all sorts of handy things, just like an Alchemist..."
Lene let out a big sigh, looking somewhat exasperated.
* * *
When I returned to the hall, the goblin hero was, as expected, out of power.
To prevent it from revival due to the temperature returning while it was in a state of suspended animation, I removed the necklace to eliminate the effect of <Anti-Magic> and finished it off properly with magic.
I restored the temperature in the mine and literally retrieved the demon core from the goblin corpses.
The bodies... well, they're not going anywhere, so for now, I have no choice but to leave them be.
This is an abandoned mine high up in the mountains, and since it's still early spring, it shouldn't rot right away... I think.
After clearing out all the remaining goblins, I finished exploring every nook and cranny of the mine.
Thus, mapping including collapsed areas that can no longer be accessed and new paths was completed by the evening of the next day.
