Volume 1 Chapter 16 Magic Is Useless, Medicine Is Useless, So What Options Do We Have?
My specialty is as an enchanter, but I've also been properly taught by my 'teacher' to fight wielding weapons.
Since I practiced martial arts back in my hometown, using a dagger to strike the critical spots of hobgoblins is a piece of cake.
However, the goblin hero seems to be no pushover.
Even with a dagger temporarily enhanced with Sharpness, it can only inflict slight wounds on its body.
This is troublesome.
"Aah, there are too many of them!"
"Don't grumble! I'm dealing with a big guy on top of that!"
As for Lene, she's blocking attacks from all around with her defensive barrier magic while retaliating with multi-casting lower-level spells.
While Absolute is effective, she's probably still maintaining the barrier just in case she faces an attack that exceeds her defense.
Yet, her fighting style is quite impressive.
"...whoops"
I dodge just in time from the goblin hero's swinging axe.
Unfortunately, that axe has split apart the head of the hobgoblin that should have been its ally.
What's going on?
Weren't we supposed to be not enemies?
I thought that, but it's likely the goblins wouldn't comprehend such reasoning.
While this is going on, the number of hobgoblins is also decreasing.
It seems many of them have fled, thinking they couldn't win.
This shows the influence of the goblin hero as the boss in front of me.
"Gather, magic essence! Piercing that one! Lightning!"
Just as all the hobgoblins either died or fled, a bolt of electricity shot from Lene's staff and pierced the Goblin Hero.
I thought for sure that would be effective... but.
"What!? It got resisted!?"
Lene shouted in disbelief.
The Goblin Hero, who was supposed to be hit by the electricity, scratched the affected area as if nothing had happened, mocking her.
"...Looks like it's wearing something around its neck. Is that it?"
A flashy necklace, unbefitting of a goblin, was hanging around its neck.
I couldn't use <Identification> to confirm, so it was just a guess, but it was probably a necklace with <Anti-Magic> applied to it.
If that's the case, direct attacks with magic are useless.
Lene's magic won't work, and my dagger can't get through either.
To an outsider, it might seem like we're in a corner.
"Tch! If only Minori were here, she would slice this guy to bits!"
With Minori's twin magic swords, <Pierce> and <Resists>, plus my enhancements, I could confidently say there's no monster that can't be severed.
But there's nothing I can do about the fact that she's not here.
...I could use that magic stone, but I don't want to use physical attacks in the mine.
If by chance this guy gets blasted and crashes into the wall, a cave-in could happen.
"Lene, do you have any useful potions or anything?! "
"The ones I have now, like explosives and poisons, are too dangerous to use in the mine! If only I had brought something that could freeze him..."
She can make potions like that?
Freezing him sounds amazing.
I wonder what ingredients are in it.
"...Hmm? Wait a second? Freezing?"
I thought of a way to attack while dodging the axe and decided to devise that plan.
I took a quick glance at the path ahead.
...Hmm, the wind is blowing.
Earlier, when I peeked, I saw the path continued past the ore vein and light too; it's a gamble, but it looks passable.
"So, Lene, do you have any magic or something to hold back the goblins instead of targeting them? Let's move forward!"
"Wha, wait!? I do have something, but what if it's a dead end ahead!?"
"It'll be fine, trust me! You and I are in this together!"
While dodging the axe, I confidently replied to the almost crying Lene.
I want her to feel at ease, since I do have a plan.
"W-Well! I don't know!"
Blushing from some misunderstanding, Lene began chanting a magic spell I didn't know.
...Whoa, the goblin hero was about to head toward her, so I quickly executed a powerful stab into its side.
Apparently, that hit hard, as the goblin hero screamed.
However, it was nowhere near a fatal wound, so in its rage, it swung its axe wildly with a dagger still out.
I managed to backstep and avoid it.
That was close, very close.
It was almost able to take my arm with it.
"Spirits of the earth, soften the ground at that goblin's feet! <Mud Snare>!"
Just after Lene's magic was unleashed, the ground beneath the goblin hero turned to mud, sinking up to its ankles and disrupting its balance.
I see, this is spirit magic, even if it is called magic.
It couldn't resist because it was affected by the ground.
Confirming that, I took a magic stone from my magic bag and infused it with Magic Power, throwing it at the foolish goblin stuck and unable to move.
"Alright, now's our chance, let's go!"
I collected the staff and yanked Lene's hand, charging down the inner path.
The Goblin Hero was shouting something behind us, but I ignored it and kept running.
In that moment.
A strong light rushed past us from behind, and I felt a chilling cold creeping up my back.
"What!? Wh-what is happening!?"
"Just run! We'll freeze to death!"
I pulled Lene's hand as if to tear it away from her, rushing up the inner path to escape the cold that was attacking my back.
