Volume 2 Chapter 21 The Hero Tries to Call Back Former Companions, but It's Too Late
The next day, Hero Makhen visited the forest again.
He stopped by the school where the monsters and human children attended.
"I'll kidnap a brat and turn them in to the guild. That way, those dull adventurers will understand what I'm saying!"
Just as Makhen was about to enter the school, it happened.
"Halt! This is the property of the Demon Lord National School! Unauthorized entry is prohibited!"
The one who teleported in was a familiar face.
"S-Saint!"
"What is it, Makhen? It's you."
It was Saint, the holy knight of the former hero party.
"What are you doing in a place like this!?"
"What do you think? I'm teaching swordsmanship to the kids."
"What!? A sword!?"
"That's right. Here at the Demon Lord National School, both humans and monsters can receive education equally. It's a wonderful place."
Unbelievable... Makhen was astonished.
"You're... under Mind Control, aren't you? How pitiful."
"Huh? What's wrong, Makhen? Suddenly...?"
Makhen said with a truly exasperated expression.
"You're being manipulated by magic. There's no way humans and monsters are equal. Don't say such foolish things."
From the bottom of his heart, this former hero thought so.
Looking down on non-humans, believing monsters to be mindless beasts.
"...Well, I didn't expect you to understand. By the way, what did you come here for?"
"That's right, Saint, wake up and help me."
"Help...?"
"Yeah, you might not realize it because you're under Mind Control, but this is a dangerous facility. Even kids can use silent magic and high-level magic. The Demon Lord is trying to create child soldiers to attack humans!"
Hearing Makhen's interpretation, Saint sighed.
"...You really don't understand anything, do you?"
"What are you babbling about! Wake up, Saint! You're trying to be an accomplice to a crime!"
He thought that if the hero begged desperately, he could break the Demon Lord's Mind Control.
...Of course, Saint is not under any Mind Control.
"Makhen, listen. The Demon Lord said this: If humans and monsters can study together in the same classroom, it might thin the wall between our 2 races. If that happens, we might get closer to a world without conflict."
"Shut up! Monsters are pests! There's no way we can get along with humans! You're just foolishly falling for the Demon Lord's sweet words!"
Even Saint was angered by Makhen's words.
"...I understand your argument. However, I am on the side of the Demon Lord. Please leave."
"Shut up! For a subordinate, you're quite arrogant! You should just listen to what the hero says, you fool!"
Clenching his fist, Makhen tried to make Saint listen, even if he had to hit him.
"Come back, Saint! Work for me... Ughhh!"
Saint punched him away, and Makhen fell with a thud.
"W-What are you doing?!"
"I'm sorry, but please leave."
"Huh!? What's with that attitude! I'm your superior!"
"You have nothing to do with me anymore. My superior is the Demon Lord."
"Wake up, Saint! You are..."
"Enough already!"
When Makhen scolded him sharply, he shrank back.
"I have no intention of returning to you! I'm living for teaching these children how to wield a sword here! Go away!"
"Th-That's..."
He had thought about adding him to his party and making him work for him, if all went well.
That plan fell through, and Makhen panicked.
"C-Cut the foolish thoughts! Saint! Right now..."
"...If you don't stop, I'll chop you down."
Overwhelmed by Saint's unusual atmosphere, Makhen hesitated.
"Never come here again. I won't show mercy, even if you're an ex-comrade."
"D-Damn it! Y-You'll regret this!"
