Volume 2 Chapter 20 The Hero Who Even Loses to Children
After Demon Lord Zeke brought back the oni clan.
Hero Makhen was out picking herbs in the forest again today.
"Damn... why am I stuck doing such a mundane job... I'm a hero, you know?"
No matter how much time passed, he never doubted that he was a hero.
Even after recklessly challenging monsters many times and losing each time, he never thought his skills were lacking.
"Huh? What's this... a school in the forest?"
As Makhen walked alone in the forest, he discovered a wooden building.
He peered inside through the window.
'I'm looking forward to today's lunch!'
"Let's play card games during lunch break!"
'Yeah, sounds good!'
"W-wait, what's going on here... humans and monsters are together?"
Children who haven't even reached ten and young monsters are chatting happily in the classroom.
The voices of the monsters did not reach Makhen.
But the human children were not wary of the monsters at all.
"Hehe... here we go!"
Makhen took out his sword and broke the window to enter.
"W-what's going on?"
"Who are you, mister?"
Ignoring the children, Makhen drew his sword.
"Even I can't lose to monster children!"
Whether they were monster kids or not, defeating them would add one to his extermination count.
There were many children in this classroom.
"This is great! I can hunt all I want!"
Holding his sword, he approached a nearby young slime.
"S-stop it!"
A human child stood in front of the slime with outstretched arms.
"What's wrong, kid? Get lost, you're in the way!"
"I won't let you... hurt my friend!"
"Friend? Ha! Don't be stupid. Listen, kid, monsters are evil that need to be defeated!"
"No! Mister Zeke said that humans and monsters can be friends!"
The children gathered and spread their arms to protect the monsters.
"Ha! Stupid kids! If you get hurt for getting in the hero's way, that's your own fault!"
Makhen tried to slash the kids down with his sword.
"Oi!"
"Take that!"
One of the kids clenched his fist and struck it into Makhen's solar plexus.
"Gah!"
Stumbling, Makhen knelt down on the spot.
"Wh-what is this power?"
"Everyone! Protect your friends!"
"Yeah!"
The kids thrust their hands forward and said.
"""[Flame Barrage!]!"""
Boom boom boom!
Countless fireballs shot from their hands.
"Ugeee!"
Getting hit by the fire projectiles all over his body, Makhen was blown outside the classroom.
"What, what's going on!? Why can those brats use intermediate magic!? And without chanting too!? Even high-level adventurers can't do that!"
Makhen was astonished by the sheer strength of the children.
"Thanks to Mister Zeke! He taught me to protect my friends!"
"Zeke... Zeke, Zeke, shut up already!"
Damn it...!
And Makhen stood up, attempting to strike the kids.
The kids and the monsters present combined their hands to use magic.
"[Gale Slicer!]!"
In that moment, a tremendous wind erupted.
"What in the world is happening!?"
Blown away by the gust, Makhen flew into the air.
With a crash, he fell outside the forest.
"C-could it be... extreme magic!?"
That is the pinnacle of arcane arts.
Only a handful of talented magicians, after dedicating their lives, can finally unleash extreme magic.
That, albeit diminished in power, was demonstrated by such children combining forces with monsters.
Of course, the power is several levels lower, but still...
"M-monsters!"
Crying and screaming, Makhen returned to the adventurer guild in the town.
"Is something wrong, Sir Makhen?"
He snapped at the receptionist.
"We need to send a large unit to the forest immediately!"
"Why is that?"
"Listen and be amazed! A child! A child of humans and monsters was going to school! And they even used extreme magic! That must be an educational institution secretly creating biological weapons!"
The adventurers stared, wide-eyed in shock.
After a moment, they burst into laughter.
"Puhahaha! There's no way that's true!"
"Were you dreaming or something?"
Makhen, his face bright red from being mocked by the adventurers, protested.
"It's true! As proof, I got hit by extreme magic!"
"Right, right. That's just an excuse for losing to a big monster's kid, isn't it?"
"N-No! It's really true! The kids were there!"
"Wow, you're trying too hard. Pathetic, huh?"
Ugh!
Makhen gritted his teeth in frustration.
Losing to a child and lacking anyone's trust hurt his pride.
"What is that school all about..."
