Chapter 83 Historically, Military And Civil Officials Tend To Clash.
"Is that 'the one left by the gods'?"
"What's dat s'posed ta mean..."
"Reginleif. It's the name of an old Valkyrie that our team is named after."
"Oh, dat's cool. Guess dat means we're lucky, right?"
"...Hah. Are you stupid? No, you were stupid..."
"Shut up, nerd."
After our squad name was announced, it seemed like today was just a meet-and-greet. Our captain quickly told us to disperse. I felt a bit let down, but maybe they thought we'd have more to talk about. So, we took the chance to have lunch together in the city.
"*Staring hard*."
But when someone stares at you like that, it's hard to enjoy your food.
"Yo, kitty chick. Got somethin' ta say ta me?"
"Hmm...? No, I was just thinking, so this is Hiiro that Sis Shura was talking about."
"What's up?"
"I heard you're always doing crazy stuff and that you look like a real bad guy. Haha, it's true!"
"Hey, get Shura out here!"
"What? It's just the truth, Hiiro."
"If ya keep spillin' truth like dat, gonna start a war, Shura!"
That Shura. If it's the truth, she should be telling everyone how great I am.
But Sham seems really friendly. She doesn't care about personal space.
She feels like a typical energetic girl. On the other hand, her sister Lyam seems quieter.
Watching Sham gobble down her food while Lyam eats slowly shows that they only look alike.
Honestly, Lyam doesn't seem knight-like at all. She looks more like she'd fit in as a librarian. Then Quollio says,
"I was a bit curious, but was Lyam a trainee too? I don't remember seeing you during training."
"Oh, that's because I wasn't a trainee. I was working as a candidate for Ráðgríðr."
"Really? Ráðgríðr is the team that mainly studies beasts and magic, right? So, you were doing things like organizing documents?"
"Yeah, something like that. I was supposed to stay with Ráðgríðr, but for some reason, I got assigned to the main team with Sis Sham."
"Huh? So they thought it'd be nice to keep the sisters together?"
"Well, that's not necessarily true... haha."
"...Hmm. It's not impossible for someone from another department to join the main team, but usually, it's because they're really talented. So, you must be pretty skilled."
"Really? I'm not that great. It was just a coincidence..."
Wow, Ms. Lyam. You seem really natural and innocent, but maybe you have hidden talents. I couldn't help but stare at her, and she shyly pulled her cat-eared hood down. People really can surprise you.
"Hmm. So, Quollio, are you interested in my Lyam? Sounds like it!"
"No! I just asked a question because I was curious!"
"But no way! You can't have Lyam because you look too weak!"
"W-weak...?"
"Right, sis..."
"That's harsh. You must take after your big sister."
"Don't look at me like that. Sham is just like that."
Is this what sisterly love looks like? I thought of Shura's typical meddling in romance. She glared back at me. I get where Sham is coming from.
I wouldn't want to rely on a weak guy either. At least he should be able to beat me.
But I also don't like how Quollio is being looked down on... Hmm. Maybe I should step in and help out.
"Hmph, thinkin' Quollio's all about looks? You're missin' the point."
"Oh? What do you mean?"
"If Shura runs your show, then that scrawny dude with specs is my boss too."
"!"
"Wait, this skinny guy with glasses? No way!"
Sham and Lyam looked up at me with a doubtful expression.
Hehe, you're skeptical, huh? But don't underestimate Quollio. He's really amazing.
"You still ain't got a clue 'bout Quollio. Listen, dis dude is straight genius-level. Just helped me and Shura outta some tight spots wit' his brains."
"What!? Sis Shura, is that true!?"
"...It's true, even if it hurts to say."
Seeing Shura nod with a serious face, Sham's mouth drops open. What a good reaction! But still, I can't let them think my support is just this much.
"That's not all. Dude might be scrawny, but his magic game's on fleek. He's prob'ly one a the best trainees out here."
"U, umm..."
"He ain't as strong as me, but he got hidden tricks still developin'. Who knows, future might see him blow up to be bigger than da knight order lead? Haha!"
"Hey, Hiiro, you're exaggerating!"
Maybe because my support was too much, Quollio looks shocked and tries to stop me.
Come on, this is how it works! It's free to say! So, I'm going to hit him with one last big compliment!
"And let's not forget dat paper test we took in trainin'!"
"Ugh, that one..."
"Hehe, face says it all – didn't exactly kill it. Same here. But dis Quollio Batigan? He's da only rookie who aced it, perfect score and all!"
"Wh-what!? That's so amazing!!!"
"Haha! See? Ain't nobody else touchin' dat, not even you, right?"
"Ugh... so frustrating!"
Hehe, I got you. My score of 21 doesn't even compare to that perfect score. In front of Sham, who looks completely defeated, I can hear the victory bell ringing in my head.
"Hey. Why am I the one feeling the most embarrassed?"
"Might be 'cause you're smart or maybe just you're too lame."
"...I feel so tired."
"Yeah, even with a little pride in dat accomplishment."
"U, shut up. It's fine, okay?"
Quollio is mumbling, but I think he's impressed by my words. Anyway, Sham should now have a better impression of Quollio after this.
I thought that for a while...
"I-I won't admit it! I won't! It's all about guts, whether you're a guy or a girl! This Sham-Sham is way cooler than that skinny glasses guy!"
"Well, I don't feel like losing to someone with such a narrow view like you."
"Hey, skinny!? I'm still growing! Someone like Quo would be done before he could even use magic!"
"You can't just get close like that. You laughed at Hiiro, but you're the one who's really simple-minded!"
"What did you say!?"
Oh, what's going on? They're (Sham & Quollio) really going at it.
What happened to my great support...?
"Hey, Hiiro."
"...What'cha want?"
"It seems like sometimes it's better to keep things moderate."
"...Yeah, got it."
"Hey, sis, don't put your feet on the table. Mr. Quollio is trying to stay calm...!"
Peace is such a fragile thing.
Watching Lyam nervously trying to mediate between the two, I realized something.
