Volume 1 Chapter 28 The Star That Still Does Not Know Light
Seeing Cosmos fuming with anger, I glanced at her Divine Revelation.
[Job Class] Stardust Magician
[Level] 20
[Skill] Spell Chanting
[Magic] Meteor Magic
[Divine Blessing]
- Strength: F85
- Agility: E130
- Resilience: F55
- Magic: D300
- Holy Power: E160
Well, it's true that she hasn't gotten any stronger at all.
There's hardly any change in her divine blessing values, and she hasn't unlocked any new skills or magic.
It's totally understandable why Cosmos is so furious about her Divine Revelation.
For now, I opened my mouth to try to calm her down.
"Y-You're leveling up just fine, right?"
"Just the level! Nothing else has changed at all! I can still only use magic that throws pebbles, and at this rate, I won't even be able to become a rank 4 adventurer, let alone a rank 1!"
"...Well, even if you say that..."
My Trainer's skill is just meant to help with leveling up.
There's no way to mess with the divine blessing values.
At least, the slight increase in Magic is a small blessing in disguise.
Thanks to that, the size and speed of the stones she can throw have gone up just a bit.
But still, with just that, it's hard to feel like she has actually gotten stronger.
"Seriously, nothing has changed! No matter how much I level up, my Divine Revelation hardly changes, and I haven't awakened any new powers! I haven't grown at all since I was kicked out of my house!"
I totally agreed with her anger.
This Divine Revelation is filled with mysteries, after all.
Each job class is supposed to have some kind of "strength" or "core ability" defined.
It's as if the gods are saying, 'This job class fights using this power'.
For example, in my case, my 'Trainer' is 'the power to help others grow'.
In Rose's case, her 'Valkyrie' is 'pure strength and agility'.
No, in Rose's case, her original job class was 'Apprentice Warrior'.
By reaching the level cap, she has the power to 'Exceed' into 'Valkyrie'.
That means her job class's strength is probably 'explosive awakening power'.
I felt like Cosmos's 'Stardust Magician' also had some hidden power.
"...I guess I really have no talent, huh?"
"..."
It's not surprising she feels that way.
Maybe it would be easier to just accept that Stardust Magician is a total dud job class.
"...Well, your level is steadily going up, so I guess that's something."
"Something?"
"When it was Rose, she could barely level up at all, and even when she did, there was no change in Divine Revelation, just like with you, Cosmos. Plus, she was stuck at single-digit levels back then."
"That red-haired girl..."
That's probably why.
Rose was able to explosively evolve by overcoming that late-blooming wall.
While every job class has its strengths, there are definitely weaknesses too.
And I think the greater the strength, the more pronounced the weakness becomes.
I have the weakness of 'not acquiring combat abilities' in exchange for 'being able to help others grow'.
Rose has 'explosive awakening power,' but her weakness is 'being weak before awakening'.
So, I thought maybe Cosmos's weakness hints at some hidden strength...
Well, it's not decided yet that Cosmos has no talent.
"That girl wasn't strong from the start, huh? I thought she had talent from the beginning."
"If she was excellent from the start, she wouldn't have come to me in the first place. In fact, when she first came, she was incredibly weak. Way weaker than Cosmos is now."
"...The way you said that, aren't you indirectly saying that I'm weak?"
Cosmos, with a slight smirk, pointed her staff at me.
I shook my head vigorously, and thankfully, she pulled her staff back.
It's fine when I call myself weak, but it seems she doesn't like it when others say it.
Anyway, I continued the conversation.
"Originally, people's level is pretty low, but it's usually easy to raise. However, in Rose's case, after a year of activity, she could only get to level '3'. On top of that, her divine blessing score was the lowest, and she had no skills or magic. There were plenty of reasons to feel despair."
"Then why is she so strong now? You tried to help her, and her level didn't budge at all, right? Yet now, she feels just as powerful as a top-tier adventurer. I mean, she's practically a hero at this point."
Right after saying that, Cosmos suddenly widened her eyes in surprise.
Then she dashed over to me, standing on her tiptoes with a puzzled expression.
"You didn't, like, use some secret technique on her, did you...?"
"N-no way! Rose got that strong purely because of her 'talent' and 'grit'!"
Finally, I explained Exceed to Cosmos.
I had already gotten permission from Rose beforehand, so I decided to reveal the secret of her job class as a reference.
It seemed that Cosmos was already aware of Exceed's existence, and she looked like she understood.
"I see, if it's Exceed, that makes sense. I've heard rumors about it, but I never thought there would actually be someone who could evolve their job class."
"Well, that's why Rose became dramatically stronger. It's not like I used some secret technique or anything."
With that explanation, Cosmos relaxed her suspicious gaze.
Honestly, if I had a secret technique, I'd want to use it openly to help.
I'm that stuck right now.
I wish Cosmos could just go all out like Rose and Exceed.
While I was lost in that daydream, staring blankly at Cosmos's Divine Revelation, I noticed something that caught my attention.
"By the way, what kind of skill is 'spell chanting'?"
I had been a little curious about it since I saw Divine Revelation.
What kind of effect does the spell chanting skill actually have? It didn't seem like anyone had used it up until today.
I could peek at its effects with the Divine Eye skill if I wanted, but it's probably better to hear it straight from the source.
So, I asked, and for a moment, Cosmos looked a bit complicated.
"...It's a skill I can't really use. By reciting a set phrase, it raises my Magic just a little bit. It's a skill that fits a useless job class."
"...? I think it sounds like a pretty normal skill. You can raise your Magic just by saying a phrase, right? It doesn't seem to have any major flaws, so why haven't you used it until now?"
"..."
For some reason, Cosmos looked away awkwardly.
Then, stumbling over her words, she continued with a somewhat defensive tone.
"W-well, there are various issues. The phrases are super long, and I can't expose myself during a fight, plus the increase in Magic is pretty minimal."
"But you don't have to stand still to use it, right? If you chant while moving around, you wouldn't be exposing yourself that much. And honestly, I think Cosmos's magic could use a bit more power. You should definitely use it more from now on."
"Y-yeah, that might be true, but..."
"Hey, why don't you just try using it a little bit?"
"..."
I was genuinely curious about that spell chanting skill.
I had never seen anyone use a similar skill, so I leaned in a bit closer to Cosmos.
Then she averted her gaze from me, but eventually, it seemed she couldn't stand my stare any longer and ran her fingers through her black hair.
"Ugh, come on!"
Cosmos, feeling a bit reckless, readied her staff.
The next moment, an unbelievable line echoed through the ruins.
"[Sparkling smile──this thrilling feeling──shine, my brightest star]──[Meteor]!"
A stone, slightly larger than usual, shot out from the tip of Cosmos's staff.
It collided with one of the stone pillars standing in the ruins, shattering it into pieces.
The power was just a little bit stronger.
Is this the effect of the spell chanting skill? No, more than that, I was more curious about the line Cosmos had just said.
"...W-what was that just now?"
"This is the 'formula' needed for the chant! Can't you figure that out?"
Cosmos was stomping her feet, her face redder than I'd ever seen.
I mean, if that's what a formula sounds like... it's super lame.
I didn't understand it at all, and it felt like a bunch of childish words strung together.
It made sense that she was genuinely embarrassed.
But thankfully, since she had a youthful appearance, it kind of helped her out a bit.
If she had said it in a cuter, more playful way, it might not have felt so awkward.
Speaking of which...
"If you're that embarrassed, couldn't you have just shown me Divine Revelation instead of going through all this trouble...?"
"You're the one who said, 'Try using it and show me!'."
The indignant Cosmos pulled out a piece of parchment that looked like it was made of sheepskin and shouted, "Show me your skill!" She tossed it over to me like it was a challenge.
'Spell Chanting' - Level 6
- Magic doubled by formula chant.
- Effect lasts until magic is activated.
- Effects do not stack.
- Magic increase 1.3 times.
- [Sparkling smile──this thrilling feeling──shine, my number one star].
As I checked the contents, Cosmos continued to shout in anger, her cheeks still flushed.
"Now you get it, right?! This flawed ability is my 'spell chanting' skill! It's a super terrible skill that totally fits my useless job class!!!"
"..."
Well, it is a bit useless, I guess.
Mainly because she has to chant these embarrassing phrases.
Plus, the magic increase rate is just average, and I don't really feel any divine blessing that makes it worth the risk of chanting.
Honestly, it's almost the same as my support magic multiplier.
It seems like the effect is only for one use, and she has to chant every time she want to use magic.
She can't even stack similar effects, so it'd be smarter to just use my support magic instead.
But there was one thing that caught my interest.
"Have you used this skill a lot already?"
"Huh...? No, not at all. I tried it a few times when Dad told me to at the beginning, and I've used it occasionally when I felt like it, but I haven't used it frequently."
"Hmm..."
As I pondered with my fist on my chin, Cosmos spoke up with a reasonable explanation.
"Because using magic 3 times is faster than chanting once, right? Plus, I don't have to say these embarrassing phrases."
"...That's a fair point."
Considering the magic increase multiplier and growth rate, it seems better to just use magic normally.
Well, if she has a moment before the next battle, she could use that time to chant and prepare for combat.
Still, for now, it doesn't seem like there's any effective way to use it, so I'll think about other uses later.
"For now, let's keep hunting the monsters around here. It's more realistic to level up and bet on the chance of a new ability appearing. I guess you'll use the skill here and there, just to be safe."
"Uh, yeah, that makes sense... for training, after all... I-I'll do it!"
Cosmos nodded, her youthful face turning bright red as she hesitated a lot.
