Chapter 9 Shura

Chapter 9 Shura

 "Candle...?"

The girl pointed a plain white candle at Ruzure.

What does this mean? Ruzure tilted his head in confusion.

Is it a hint that she's going to turn you into a wax figure?

But that guess was completely wrong.

"'Light up, light up, on the candlestick'"

 "W-What, a spell!? Y-You! What are you doing──"

 "[Luminous Light]."

Right after she chanted something and raised her hand,

a blinding light flashed from the tip of the candle, burning white in his vision.

 "Ughhh!!!"

 "It's so bright!"

 "Whoa, what is happening?!"

 "Ugh!"

 "Eek!"

(What the heck, suddenly a light!?)

"Ugh, ugh, using magic here, what are you thinking?!"

 (Magic? Magic. That was it!)

"This is just a flashy trick!"

"Using runes and a catalyst too! Damn it, I still can't see!"

The sudden strong flash threw the venue into chaos.

Ruzure was hit at such close range, it must have been unbearable for him. Seeing him groan and cover his eyes made me feel a bit sorry for him.

But more than that, I was super curious.

That was magic. In a world where words like beast are common, this was another mystery.

I had read about it in the books I brought back from school, but seeing it like this was my first time.

She chanted a spell, and the catalyst was a candle, right? Is "Luminous Light" the name of the Magic?

Oh man, this is so cool. It hits right in the heart of a boy. I want to try it too!

"If it's the same red Magic, maybe fire magic would have been better?"

"Y-You, stop joking! W-What are you planning to do to me, stop!"

"I'm not going to do anything. It would just be a waste of magic."

 "W-Waste?"

While I was getting excited by myself, it seemed like things were heating up over there too.

With a look of annoyance, the fire-starting woman had her hands on her hips, glaring at Ruzure.

"People like you are so annoying. This is the Entrance Exam Venue. If you want to chase girls, go to the busy town or street. Well, I guess a potato like you wouldn't find any girls anyway."

 "W-What!? Are you insulting me?!"

"Isn't it the truth? If you're a noble, you must have looked in a mirror at least once. Or are your eyes rotten? If so, you should go see a healer right away."

"Y-You, what do you mean by that?!"

"I'm saying you're annoying. Don't come any closer with that ugly face."

 "Ugh! Ugh!! Ugh!!!"

Wow, she's ruthless. The way she looks down on him is on another level.

Ruzure's face turned from red to blue and then yellow. He looked like a traffic light.

But I could see what was going to happen next. It's sad, but it's pretty simple.

"Y-You, you commoner! How dare you... Shoukk! Hiiro!"

 "Y-Yes!"

 "..."

"I'll make sure this arrogant, clueless girl can't talk back ever again!!!"

See? I knew it would go this way.

"Hey, Hiiro, Shouk, why are you just standing there? Teach this arrogant girl a lesson!!"

 "Y-Yes, sir!"

 "Not happening."

There's no way I'll teach her a lesson.

Where would you find a protagonist who sides with a guy who fails at flirting and then holds a grudge?

"W-What?! Why are you scared? She's just a girl!"

"Are you stupid?" (Scared? That's not it.)

 "What?!"

"We have an exam coming up. I don't want to waste my energy playing around here."

"What do you mean by that? Are you saying you're going to stand against me?!"

But guys like him don't listen to reason.

It's pointless to speak the truth; he won't listen anyway.

 "Listen, Ruzure."

So, this is a good chance.

 I'll make my intentions clear.

I have my own path to follow.

"I'm serious about becoming a knight. If you want to do something, do it yourself."

 "Huh?"

I looked firmly into Ruzure's eyes.

A strong will. Strong words. Even if they don't get through, I can show them.

The silent plea filled with my feelings──how did the selfish noble in front of me take it?

 "...Enough! You stubborn fool!"

 "Wait, Sir Ruzure!"

For a moment, Ruzure's eyes showed a hint of fear. I silently watched as he turned away, as if shaking off that emotion.

"You're serious, huh? Hmph, we'll see about that."

 "Huh?"

"You're just all talk. Someone from the Training Academy is nothing special."

 "...You have a sharp tongue."

"I know, but I don't want to hear it from you."

This is how I was treated after being left behind.

But I guess I'm seen as a bit better than Ruzure.

Twirling a curl of her hair with her fingers, the girl was glaring at me. It was kind of scary. Why does she have such a strong gaze?.

 "What's your name?"

 "Me?"

 "Who else would it be?"

 "...Hiiro Merifar."

 "Oh, I see."

"What kind of response is that?" (Isn't that a bit rude?)

"Shut up... Also, I'm not 'you.' I'm Eshurareze. Just call me 'Shura' for short."

"Shura? (Shura? That's a tough nickname)."

 "What's wrong with that?"

"I have no complaints, just stop biting back."

 "You too!"

 Shura. No, Eshurareze.

From her name, I wonder why she shortened it like that.

She embodies the saying "A beautiful rose has thorns" perfectly, with no hint of cuteness at all.

 "...Sorry about that."

 "Huh?"

"I'm saying you should hurry up and go to that potato noble. People like him are a hassle if you leave them alone."

 "..."

 "See you."

Just like that, she left after only apologizing.

Was she worried about the gap between me and Ruzure, or did she just want to say I was annoying? She has a sharp tongue, but maybe she's not a bad person at heart.

But Shura... with all that pressure, including her nickname.

The intimidating vibe crushed any hope that she might be a tsundere heroine, leaving me with nothing but a wry smile.

 "...Huh?"

Suddenly, I noticed something on the ground.

I slowly picked it up; it was a black ribbon. No doubt about it, this must belong to Shura.

She looked so cool, but maybe she's a bit clumsy after all.

Anyway, I thought I should return it to her, and just as I was about to chase after her...

"Everyone, quiet! Please listen carefully! We will now divide the students into groups! Make sure you don't miss anything!"

A voice rang out from the stage, silencing all the noise in the venue.
