Chapter 67 I Will Save You
(Hey, master)
(What's good, Ruthless?)
(Um, was that really okay? Master, you're not going to be a knight anymore, right?)
(Yeah, I guess so.)
(I don't really agree with that. Especially the part about just that girl.)
(Why not? Shura was hella against it from the start. She said she came with me 'cause she was worried my solo.)
(I heard that earlier, but... don't you ever wonder why it's just her?)
(Nope. If her crime is whack now, ain't that a good thing?)
(...Sigh. This is it. Did I mess up making you my master?)
(That's harsh.)
Dear Goddess, my new partner is already trying to lead me into trouble. I feel like crying.
It's completely dark outside, and Ruthless seems displeased with my favorable testimony regarding Shura.
But come on, it can't be helped, right? I was the one who actually took the request. What's the point of lying? I think it's best to answer like that as the protagonist.
(Sigh. I wonder how long we'll be left here. Has master forgotten about me?)
(No way, there ain't nobody with a presence like mine)
(Hmm. True, your thoughts and actions are intense, but your status and looks aren't that impressive.)
(Huh?)
(When master is quiet, you just seem like someone ordinary.)
(What...? No fkn way!?!?)
Hey, hey, hey.
What are you saying, Ms. Ruthless? Capturing a protagonist like me.
Damn it, I know I'm not as flashy as Shura or Quollio, so that hit hard. That's why my thoughts couldn't just stay in my head when it came to Ruthless.
"who's a side character?! i'm gonna b Hiiro!"
"That's quite a loud thought. You've been Hiiro from the start."
"!?"
(Oh no.)
I shouted, and surprisingly, I got a response from someone unexpected.
I turned to see a window with iron bars connected to a cell. That voice definitely came from there.
"Shura?! Wat are you doin' in a place like that...!?"
"Idiot, keep your voice down. Be quiet!"
"Oh, right. But why are you there?"
"I have a friend who knows the layout of Headquarters. It was a bit tough to find, but it seems there's hardly any surveillance. It's ironic to be helped by the knights' laziness."
So, she snuck outside connected to the Punishment Room window. She's cool but does some risky stuff.
If she gets caught, it'll be bad, so why did she come all the way here? Right now, I wanted to know her purpose more than how she got here.
"I came to check on you. I thought you might be regretting your cool act from earlier."
"Huh? No way, I was just thinkin' 'bout my future."
"Just kidding. You're still overly optimistic, aren't you?"
(Hmph, is she for real? When Shura says it, it sounds super extra.)
(Hmph, even if it's a joke, that girl has a bad attitude.)
(...Is it just me, or are you just being harsh on Shura or what, Ruthless?)
(It's just your imagination.)
I'm glad Ruthless's words are only for me. She seems to have a bad vibe between them.
But I guess sneaking in to check on me means Shura might actually be worried about me. She can be cute sometimes.
"And if you just make a one-sided debt to me and feel satisfied, I'd be annoyed."
"Huh?"
"You helped me at the orphanage and gave me a favorable testimony here. What's up, are you in love with me?"
"Are you a fool? I just helped because we're teammates. Don't say freaky crap."
Oh, I take that back. She's not cute.
I guess as a rival character, she's not just grateful. Her words are pretty twisted, and I can't help but feel annoyed.
"I know. But... I don't actually dislike you."
(...Huh?)
Wait, what? She said she doesn't dislike me. I don't dislike Shura either, but...
I was confused when Shura suddenly spoke in a soft voice, and then something fluttered through the window bars.
What is this? I picked it up and saw it was a "ribbon."
It was black and made of cloth. It was Shura's ribbon that I found during the entrance exam.
"Hold onto this."
"This ribbon... is it from that era? Ain't it somethin' big time?"
"It is important. It's a keepsake from people who meant a lot to me."
"A keepsake, huh... then why you givin' it to me?"
"I'm not giving it to you. I'm just forcing it on you. You have to give it back later. So, if you use it for something weird, I'll kill you."
"I told you I won't use it!"
"Hehe."
Maybe remembering our old conversations, her laugh was unusually cheerful for her age.
But wait. A keepsake from important people? Why would she give me something so precious?
"Hiiro."
"Yeah?"
"I will definitely save you."
"Shura...?"
"So, just wait there."
Wait. Why does she sound so determined?
What is she planning to do? Shura doesn't answer my questions.
"Shura!"
"...I'll see you later."
After that one reply, I heard her footsteps running away.
I clung to the window bars and looked outside. But Shura was nowhere to be seen. Only her footsteps disappeared into the dark.
(...What are you planning to do, Shura?)
The moon in the thick night sky looked a bit red.
For some reason, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease.
