Chapter 44 Bold Confessions Are The Protagonist's Privilege

Chapter 44 Bold Confessions Are The Protagonist's Privilege

 Dear big brother,

Hi, it's your little sister Sara. How are you doing?

Everyone in the village is buzzing about you joining that Brünnhilde group.

The village head has even started bringing me bread made by his wife and fresh veggies from his garden. He says they're looking forward to your success and that you're the pride of Helmel.

The adults seem to have changed their tune, acting all obvious about it. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but I can't help it. Sorry about that.

Also, some of the girls in the village are curious about you. They were talking about marrying up or something.

The boys, on the other hand, seem a bit complicated. Some are saying things like, "Why him?" and talking about bribes and unfairness.

I think they're just jealous, I can tell. Because whenever the girls are excited, they always have something negative to say.

But there are also boys who really respect you. Like that kid Selmo from 3 houses down, remember him?

He's been swinging a wooden sword in his yard, saying he wants to be just like you.

So yeah, that's how things are. Everyone's a bit restless, and it's making me feel uneasy too.

By the way, I read in your letter that you'll have a longer break before joining the main group, right?

If that's the case, it would be nice if you could come back and show your face to the village.

I'll cook your favorite meal for you!

 Oh, and one more thing.

It's important to work hard as a knight, but don't forget to find a girlfriend too. And when you do, make sure to introduce her properly. Okay?

 From Sara Merifar'

“Tch. She didn't need to bring up that girlfriend part. What a nosy brat.”

After folding the letter carefully, a gentle breeze brushed my bangs.

Feeling the fresh air, I smiled and took a sip of my tea, closing my eyes and thinking.

My little sister is just too cute, isn't she?

(...Sara. I've just seen a glimpse of the world's truth.)

So this is what it means to be a little sister fan.

What is this cute, slightly embarrassing feeling? It's amazing. For someone like me, who's been an only child my whole life, it's incredibly powerful. It even makes me think about being a hero and having a sister complex.

"...When you suddenly grin like that, it ruins the taste of my tea."

 But still.

For some reason, my usual poker face broke, and my goofy smile seemed to shock the beautiful silver-haired girl sitting across from me.

Yeah, well, she's Shura, but still.

"Just hearing you talk about your sister in a letter shouldn't be that weird, right?"

 "What's your problem?"

"Your face gives off a weird vibe."

"My face? What's wrong with my face? If it bothers you so much, maybe you should leave."

"Don't mess with me. I was here enjoying my meal first. Why should I leave just because you showed up?"

 "You've got some nerve—"

 "What's with that villainous look?!"

Staring each other down over tea and cake, it was me and Shura.

You and me. Beauty and the Beast. A clear sky on the 11th of Gemini.

This was an afternoon during the break before the new recruits were formed.

I had a tough time in the first battle against Shouk, but I breezed through the second and third battles.

Thanks to my magic training with Quollio, I guess. It was surprising that Shouk was the hardest for me, but a win is a win.

I successfully secured my spot in Brünnhilde and proudly sent a letter to my sister, keeping up with my training.

Today, I finished my morning routine and went to the post office to get a reply from my sister.

While reading her letter, I wanted to grab a bite, so I looked for a nice café, but it was completely full.

So, I ended up sharing a table on the open terrace with this girl I was glaring at.

"So, why are you still in Outo? You're from the village below, right? Helmel or something? Aren't you going home?"

"Tch, Helmel's fine. I'll go back when I'm ready. Right now, getting stronger is what matters."

"That sounds like a dumb excuse. You could train in the village too."

"You think it's that easy? It's a backwater! If you want real magic training, you stay where the action is, not in the middle of nowhere."

"Oh, really? What about Quollio? You used to learn magic from him all the time. I haven't seen him lately."

"Quollio? Ha, he got dragged home. Kicking and screaming."

 "By force?"

"Yeah. His family sent a crew to snatch him up—maids, butlers, the whole rich kid parade. Now my training's a joke thanks to that."

"Wow, that sounds tough for him."

While complaining, I picture that scene from before.

I knew Quollio came from a decent family, but I never thought he'd be dragged away by maids and butlers.

I might not have the right to complain since I ignored him when he was half-crying and asking for help.

His family probably just wanted to see him so badly.

So, it wouldn't be right for me to get involved.

I'm not at fault. It's not like I was jealous of the beautiful maid calling him "young master." Really, I'm not lying.

"Well, if Quollio isn't here, you could just go back to the village, right? Is there a reason you don't want to go back?"

"Why are you asking so many damn questions?"

"...Just saying, if you go back, I won't have to see your annoying face."

"Tch, you can talk all you want. But tough luck, Shura. I've got my reasons for staying here. Got a secret plan to shoot for something bigger."

"I'm not jealous or anything... wait, a secret plan?"

"Yep, it's a damn good one. Wait──since we're here together, this might actually be fate."

Just as I was about to share my exciting idea, a spark of realization hit me.

It was actually a secret plan, but there was a little problem.

However, with Shura looking puzzled in front of me, I thought maybe we could solve it together easily.

 I felt confident.

I took Shura's delicate hand in both of mine and said,.

"Shura, come with me. Be my partner."

 "...Huh?!"

 I confessed.

A sudden confession is a privilege of the main character.

At that moment, Shura's round, red eyes looked surprised, and for a second, she forgot her usual sharpness. It was kind of cute.
