Chapter 35 Unexpected Tears
The selection test that was announced was really simple.
It was just 3 one-on-one matches between randomly paired rookie soldiers.
The weapons were replicas from the entrance exam. Magic was allowed too.
You had to use all your strength to grab the win.
This selection test was basically the big finale of all the tough training we went through.
"Alright, let's do this! I'm going to show those guys who laughed at me in the main force!"
"I've been waiting for this moment. After surviving that hellish month, I'm definitely going to join the honorable main force of Brynhildr!"
"My dear Sir Leonhardt, please wait for me! I'll win every match in the selection test and come to your side!"
Everyone around me, guys and girls, was super pumped up.
It was proof of our confidence after getting through that tough month.
Depending on how many wins we got in those 3 matches, we could even get a lot of praise and congratulations for joining the main knight squad Brynhildr.
There was no way we wouldn't be excited.
Of course, I was fired up too.
"Now, I will hand out the papers with each person's opponent. The start time and location of the test are also written, so make sure to check them."
As the instructor started explaining, each soldier's name was called.
Feeling the tension in the air, I was eagerly waiting for my name to be called.
"Next, Hiiro Merifar!"
"...!"
(This is it. It's finally here.)
As I calmly took the paper while other members watched, my hand was shaking.
But it wasn't fear. It was excitement.
"Hahaha..."
I couldn't help but let out a villain-like grin, but I didn't care at all. I was just that hyped up.
(This is the moment. It's my turn as the protagonist!)
I had a strong feeling about this, ever since the entrance ceremony a month ago.
Because think about it. Just when the story was about to start after joining, we had this preparation period. If you look at it from a metaphorical point of view, you'd have to realize something big was coming.
During that time, I... no, Hiiro met Quollio again and fixed our relationship. Then came the magic training. It could be seen as a power-up period for the protagonist, a break in the story.
So, what comes next after the break?
From all the classic stories I've learned, I could guess. I had a feeling.
At the end of this power-up period, in this selection test, something huge was going to happen for the protagonist.
"This is the paper. I hope your efforts during the training period pay off."
"...Yes."
So, what is this huge event?
My brain was buzzing with predictions.
Simply put──it's the existence of "Shura."
(In this past month, I barely interacted with her while training with Quollio... but she had a strong presence.)
Shura. The girl I recognized as my rival, who stood out with her amazing skills and presence during training.
I could feel that our connection was going to be long from the moment I first saw her.
It seemed like we were going to push each other and compete.
But we hadn't known each other for long yet.
We hadn't had any major clashes. Just some playful banter here and there. Signs of rivalry were starting to show, though.
(So, it wouldn't be surprising if we had a fight to deepen our rivalry soon!)
In conclusion, Shura and I were going to clash here.
Looking at the story from above, it was the perfect timing.
Plus, depending on the result here, it could lead to joining the main squad, making this a "stage where I absolutely cannot lose."
This was the only chance. The best timing ever.
And on top of that, we had just finished a month of training, making everything set up perfectly.
I was sure. A clash with my rival, and at the end of it──my victory.
(I could see the story! I'll take the win from my rival here, and I'll rise as the protagonist! Yes, this is going to be amazing!)
Perfect.
A perfect and flawless vision of the future.
My hand shook as I held the piece of paper given to me by the instructor, feeling excited about the big chance ahead. I was gripping it so tightly that it got wrinkled. But it's not torn, so that's good.
Even if it did tear, it wouldn't really matter, and the test matchups wouldn't change.
Yeah, nothing changes.
My fate is set as long as I'm the protagonist.
(Alright... time to check the answers!)
That line sounded pretty heroic, so I'll save it for a serious moment later.
While thinking about my bright future, I opened the paper in my hand.
"Come on, bring it on...!"
