Chapter 32 The Four Primary Colors And Color Balance

Chapter 32 The Four Primary Colors And Color Balance

Do you want to learn about magic?.

I nodded eagerly at Quollio's suggestion, almost shaking my head off.

Ever since I saw Shura's magic, or even just realized that magic existed, I wanted to try it out.

Plus, I thought if I learned more about magic, I could solve my own problems.

I couldn't miss this big opportunity.

"First, I think we should start with the basics. Like I said earlier, magic is a 'technique' to handle 'Magi,' and it's wisdom passed down from ancient times. You take in Magi in your own way and show it through runes and catalysts... that's the mystery of it."

Wisdom. What an exciting word! Even though this is just the introduction, I couldn't help but feel thrilled.

"Got it. So runes and catalysts are essential for magic, right?"

"No, not really. To activate magic, all you need is Magi and the name of the magic."

"So, runes and catalysts aren’t that important?"

"Not at all. runes and catalysts are important techniques that enhance the effects of magic. Yeah... I guess you could say seeing is believing."

 Seeing is believing.

So that means we're going to practice it. With a rush of excitement in my chest, I followed Quollio, who suddenly changed his vibe.

 (...!)

 It wasn't just his vibe.

Around Quollio, green light particles floated and sparkled like stars.

It was a sign of something magical.

It felt real, not fake. Quollio raised his arms high, as if to say this is the real deal.

 "'Sylph's Play'!"

 "!"

As he moved his arms, a "green crescent moon" shot out.

It was an impossible phenomenon, something that could only be called magic.

The blade of wind Quollio unleashed flew straight and sliced through a thick tree branch.

 "Holy crap...!"

"Good reaction! But it's too early to be surprised. Next, I'll show you the true essence of this magic."

For someone who thought fantasy was just fiction, this was already amazing.

Just seeing the solid form of magic gave me goosebumps. But Quollio smiled, as if to say this was just the beginning, and pulled out a small bottle from his pocket.

(What is that... bugs and bird feathers?)

 "'Frolic, play, scatter!'"

The contents of the bottle were released into the air with what sounded like a spell.

Countless tiny wings of birds and bugs sparkled for a moment in the light, and as they were wrapped in Quollio's green Magi, they swelled up like flames absorbing fuel.

 "'Sylph's Play'!!"

Then, the wind blade released again, and everything was different this time.

 The size. The speed.

The power was enough to break not just branches but the whole tree trunk.

"...Whoa... that’s insane. The power jump is unreal."

"Of course! This is the essence of magic."

"...Wait, so... the stuff in the bottle is the catalyst, and those words are the runes? Hey, who scattered those wings?"

"That's part of the catalyst too. A catalyst isn't just about having what you need; it also includes actions that relate to the stories or ideas behind the magic. The catalyst for 'Sylph's Play' means to scatter the wings. Magic is kind of like a ritual."

"A ritual... that’s so druid-like." (I love it! Magic is so romantic!)

The two processes made it clear that you can't just have the wings to make it work.

The effort and time needed to do it made magic feel more real and close to me.

In fact, it really is close.

Both Magi and magic. I felt a shiver of realization that I was living in that kind of world.

"Now... what I just showed you is a beginner's magic of what's called 'green magic.' By the way, do you know about the concept of the 4 primary colors?"

"Huh? Four primary colors... sounds familiar, I guess."

"Don't know what's inside, huh. Sigh, this is just like teaching a little kid from scratch. I guess I have to explain it properly, so pay attention."

 "......Oh."

Even though he sounded casual, Quollio's glasses sparkled with excitement.

(Ah man... he's really into this, the knowledge-sharing guy.)

In the past week, I learned that Quollio not only loves to gather knowledge but also loves to share it.

When I asked him a simple question about herbs, he went on and on about theories and research like it could go on all night.

"The 'Four Primary Colors' are the 4 main attributes that make up the world, and each one has strong characteristics. Let's break them down one by one. First, we have [Red]. Its mysteries include 'flame,' 'light,' and 'laser.' It's one of the more aggressive colors and is great for destruction."

(Red... wasn't that what Shura used too?)

"Next is [Blue]. Its mysteries include 'water flow,' 'healing,' and 'ice.' This color is versatile and can be really effective depending on the situation. Then there's [Green], which has mysteries like 'wind,' 'blockage,' and 'thunder.' It has a wide range of influence and can easily take control in battles."

(So blue is water, and green is wind. That means Quollio is a green magic user who's good with wind.)

"And finally, we have [Yellow]. Its mysteries include 'earth,' 'repulsion,' and 'abundance.' This color is very useful and can be applied in everything from fighting to farming... So, that's a quick overview of the Four Primary Colors."

After finishing his summary, Quollio took a big breath like he was filling his empty lungs with air.

But attributes, huh. It sounds like a game system, but it's probably better to not try to understand everything at once. It's easier to remember the basics and then gradually get used to it through practice.

That's the best way. I've done that with games before. If I tried to remember everything, my brain would definitely explode. I usually just level up and hit things anyway.

 I'm not a total muscle-head or anything.

"Okay, so red is fire, blue is water, green is wind, yellow is earth. Easy."

"Well, I actually want you to notice more of the secondary features of each attribute, but for now, that's fine. Plus, I'm getting into it. Let's dive deeper. Can you keep up?"

 "Uh, duh. Bring it on."

But it sounds like it's about to get even harder.

"I talked about the Four Primary Colors, but when dealing with magic, you can't forget about the power relationships between them and the Magi ratio in the area (color balance)."

 "Power relationships? Color balance?"

"Yeah. Generally, 'red' is strong against 'blue,' 'blue' is strong against 'green,' 'green' is strong against 'yellow,' and 'yellow' is strong against 'red.' But this can change depending on the user's mental strength and magic accuracy."

(Oh no. This is getting complicated. So, it's red → blue → green → yellow for the power relationships, right?)

"And magic can be affected by the Magi ratio in the area (color balance). For example, in a place rich in fire Magi, like a volcano, red magic gets stronger while blue magic weakens. The Magi and the area's color balance are super important for magic, just like runes or catalysts. But this is just the basics. It's not that hard, right?"

"......Uh, yeah. This is all basic stuff, right? No problem. Totally easy."

 This is just the basics?

I tried to act tough, but honestly, I felt a bit worried.

I've made my teachers cry all through school, so I know I'm not great at studying.

The deep, endless complexity of magic made me twitch at the corner of my mouth.
