Volume 13 Chapter 19 The End Of The Incident
Al and the others stayed alert near the guard headquarters gate but were not attacked again. Al occasionally used the 'Floating Eye' spell to search the city for Lord Veil and Tempest Kingdom spies but found nothing.
Just before dawn, around the time the first bell rang, Naresh was called to an emergency meeting at the guard headquarters. He returned to Al and the others after the second bell rang.
"It seems that reinforcements from the Margrave Rain Knights stationed at the border fortress are coming soon. Our job is done for now. Shall we head back to the mansion?"
Naresh, looking a bit tired, said this. It was understandable. He had been working non-stop since early morning yesterday, except for a one-hour nap along the way.
"Understood. Thank you for your hard work."
Lord Radyard expressed his gratitude. However, he also looked quite tired, almost the same as Naresh.
"At the meeting, His Excellency Viscount Parker thanked everyone for three main points: discovering the Tempest Kingdom's secret base, rescuing during the guard headquarters attack, and urgent communication with Baron Nicholas afterward. He especially praised Al, saying, 'A lot went well because of you.' I'm really grateful and proud of you as a friend."
After responding to the fire on Alder Tree Street, Baron Nicholas saw torch lights outside the north gate and went to scout the border city of Parker. It was Al who discovered a squad of guards he led and informed the captain at the guard headquarters through Naresh.
"Well, I guess I was just lucky? There were a lot of mistakes too."
Al often thought that he could have done more, so he didn't feel like things went that well, but seeing Naresh's happy expression made him feel like he had been somewhat helpful.
"The magician attached to the guard was impressed by your spells, Al. They were surprised that you could send out so many 'Floating Eye' spells and wondered how the range of the 'Telepathy' spell could be more than a hundred meters."
Naresh thought that the 'Floating Eye' spell was tiring if used too much, but he wondered if it was really that bad. He also had more things he wanted to discuss with Eric and the others.
"I think we might get a reward for our efforts this time, but it will probably take a while since we need to report to His Excellency Margrave Rain first. So, please wait a bit. Also, just to let you know what we talked about in the meeting, we concluded that the attack was definitely from Lord Veil of the Tempest Kingdom."
Naresh took a breath and adjusted himself in his chair before continuing.
"And, the magicians we fought before reaching the guard headquarters were likely a scouting team set up by Lord Veil to watch for the returning guard team, as His Excellency Baron Nicholas mentioned. I also checked with the magician at the guard headquarters, and it seems that the only spell that uses hand signs is the 'Telepathy' spell. So, it's assumed that the magician contacted Lord Veil, which is probably why the attack on the guard headquarters was called off."
"I see..."
Sigmund said, nodding and speaking without thinking.
"Did they say anything about Lord Veil's goals?"
Lord Radyard asked Naresh with great interest. However, Naresh shook his head.
"That's still unclear. One captain suggested they might have come to help the people we caught at the Tempest Kingdom's secret base. They are Fletcher from the Second Magician Corps and Melville from the Third Magician Corps, and I agree. That is because, even among the guards, there was a story that they didn't know about the 'Telepathy' spell, which can be used without chanting. I didn't know that either..."
With that, Naresh sighed. Speaking of which, Al also didn't know that the 'Telepathy' spell could be used without chanting until he actually learned it.
It's understandable that Naresh didn't know, but it seems like a problem that not many in the guard team are aware of.
"When we capture a magician, we usually put on a mouth gag and handcuffs, right? However, many in the guard team thought the handcuffs were just to keep the gag in place. Because of this, after handing over the magicians, we might not have properly sealed their hand signs at the guard station. As a result, Melville could have contacted Lord Veil to inform him of his capture, leading to the attack on the guard headquarters."
"Oh, really? That's quite something to think about. We also..."
Lord Radyard looked at Al with worry. But Al smiled brightly and replied that everything was okay. For Al, it was natural to make sure that hand signs couldn't be used when putting on handcuffs.
"Well, for now, we need to see what comes out of the burned area on Alder Tree Street. After that, depending on what the magicians confess, we should understand what Lord Veil was trying to do here. Of course, we also need to look into the incident involving John Sanford, the former Baron."
"What will happen to Fletcher?"
Al asked, curious. Fletcher was a magician from the second magician corps and was the first to suggest surrendering.
"Well, this time, Viscount Parker said that he is cooperating with the investigation and there might be some leniency. However, it seems that the 3 captured magicians and their subordinates will all be sent under Margrave Lester's command, so we don't know what will happen."
However, it seemed that they had made some progress on the initial problem regarding the murder of the former Baron Sanford. For now, it seemed they had achieved their original goal.
"I understand. For now, it seems like we can take a break. I'm tired. Let's go home."
Lord Radyard said, and everyone nodded in agreement.
