Volume 13 Chapter 18 Continued - Midnight Incident
"Sir Naresh, that technique earlier... I see, today it's Al using that special one, right?"
Lord Radyard glanced at Al as if he noticed something.
"Yeah, last time I messed up the power and ruined my sword, but this time it worked out well."
Naresh smiled as he checked his sword. Last time, after Al used the 'Physical Boost' spell oh him, Naresh had cut a goblin in half, bending his sword at the base.
This time, he could use his 'Fighting Skills' without breaking his weapon. The enemies on the ground groaned in pain, unable to fight, but they weren't completely cut in half.
"Let's tie them up quickly and head to the guard headquarters."
Desmond tore a robe from a fallen enemy and began tying them up. At that moment, Al noticed a magician's body glowing with a pale light after raising both hands in surrender.
It reacted to his earlier 'Magic Sense' spell. Al stayed alert for spells like 'Magic Missile' and prepared to use 'Spasm,' but without an incantation, he was completely caught off guard.
'Dispel Magic.'
In a hurry, Al cast the 'Dispel Magic' spell. The pale light disappeared, and the magician looked regretful. He might have thought he wouldn't be noticed.
"Magician used a spell or a magic tool. It might have been the 'Telepathy' spell. They quickly canceled it, but if that was the case, maybe they connected for a word or 2?"
They searched the magician's belongings. There was nothing that reacted with the 'Magic Sense' spell. This means it was probably the 'Telepathy' spell. Or maybe there are other spells that can be activated with finger movements that Al just doesn't know about?
"I got it. For now, let's hurry."
Naresh and the others quickly tied up the magician and his guards. They left the rest to Sigmund and his followers, deciding to move on. The guard headquarters was only a few hundred meters away.
It was concerning that they were much closer than when they got a response from the 'Locate Object' spell, but the carriage might have moved. Still, it worried them that Lord Veil had not shown up yet.
When Al, Naresh, Lord Radyard, and Desmond reached the guard headquarters, it looked like a fight had occurred. The gate was broken, and guards were lying on the ground. A black carriage was parked nearby.
"What happened? What's going on?"
Desmond stepped forward to stop Naresh, who was about to run. There might still be someone else there. Naresh followed behind Lord Radyard. Al was with them too.
The inside of the black carriage was empty. The gate was badly damaged; it wasn't as strong as a castle gate but was still made of iron. Had they used a siege weapon?
Inside the gate was a square area, with a straight path extending about 50 meters (164ft) ahead to the guard headquarters building. Near the entrance, a few guards were moving around, checking on the other guards lying nearby.
"Are you okay?"
Naresh shouted and waved his hand at them. The guards seemed to recognize Naresh and Lord Radyard. When they got a bit closer and confirmed their identities, they hurried over and saluted.
"Lord Naresh... Yes. We were attacked by an unknown group of about 30 magicians, but we managed to drive them off."
The man in the middle quickly took off his helmet and answered. He was definitely one of the men who attended the meeting in the evening. He was probably one of the captains. They could see a look of relief on his face.
"30! As expected of the guard team. Did you defeat them all?"
Lord Radyard asked. Considering they had driven them off, it was strange that only the guards were lying down. Had they been carried away?
"I'm, I'm sorry. The man who seemed to be in charge, a magician, suddenly shouted to retreat and ran away. This happened just a few minutes before Mr. Naresh and Lord Radyard arrived. It's embarrassing to say, but until then, we were at a serious disadvantage. Most of the guard team had gone to the fire scene on Alder Tree Street and the city gate, so only my team and the reserve team were left at headquarters..."
The guard captain looked frustrated. The reserve team was probably made up of trainees. Plus, it was the middle of the night, and not everyone lived on the guard headquarters' grounds. It was somewhat understandable. Were the attackers from the Tempest Kingdom? What was their goal? And why did they retreat?
"By the way, was that man in charge gray-haired and wrinkled...?"
Al described Lord Veil's features in detail. The captain nodded in agreement.
"I knew it..."
Naresh turned back to the gate and tried to run after the enemy, but Lord Radyard hurriedly stopped him.
"Sir Naresh, there are 30 of them, and some are skilled magicians. Chasing them could be dangerous. We should help defend this place until His Excellency Baron Nicholas returns. Besides, the ones we caught should be brought here soon."
The carriage that Lord Veil used was left abandoned outside the gate. It's unlikely that they realized it would be found by the 'Locate Object' spell. Maybe they thought a carriage would stand out at night.
"For now, I'll keep watch from the sky."
'Floating Eye.'
Al looked around from a little higher up. There seemed to be many buildings like churches and government offices in the area.
Some lights were shining from the windows of nearby buildings, as if people noticed the commotion, but there were no people in the streets.
"For now, it looks like there are no attackers nearby."
At Al's report, Naresh and Lord Radyard let out a small sigh of relief.
"That's right. Just as Lord Radyard said. If there's anything else we can do, please let us know. Until then, we will continue to keep watch around us. Is that okay?"
"Yes... understood. Thank you very much. Now, I'll return to leading my unit."
Naresh replied to the captain of the guard. Considering his position as captain, he was probably a knight or a squire, but he acted like he was addressing a superior when talking to the younger Naresh.
"Al, can you look for the presence of His Excellency Baron Nicholas? He should be leading near Alder Tree Street or around the north or south gate of this city."
The 'Floating Eye' doesn't need to stay in the sky here all the time. Besides, given the situation, if the eye gets caught by some security magic tool, it should be fine as long as it's not a big deal.
Al lightly nodded and decided to first direct the 'Floating Eye' towards Alder Tree Street, where it seemed most likely to find something.
