Volume 11 Chapter 3 Wyvern

Volume 11 Chapter 3 Wyvern

 "Did it work?"

A loud roar of wind filled the air as Al watched a bright light hit the wyvern's body. It looked like a flower of light blooming, swirling and spreading out. But the wyvern, despite being hit by the light, rolled forward, growling and still ready to fight. Al quickly took a step back, then another.

"Lord Al, step back. It's time for the knights to take over."

Joanna had somehow come right next to Al. She grabbed his arm and pulled him behind her.

 "Ms. Joanna?!"

"Let me have my moment to shine."

With a smirk, she stepped forward, holding the bastard sword Al had found in the ruins. The wyvern, struggling to breathe, leaned against a rock, but its eyes stayed locked on Al and the others, still ready to fight. Was Joanna really planning to face this 10-meter (33ft) monster alone? Al glanced back to see Patricia hiding behind a rock, looking worried. This fearless side of Joanna was so different from the one trembling in the sky--this must be her true self.

Joanna stood protectively in front of Al, readied the bastard sword with both hands, and licked her lips.

 'Shield!'

As Al started to chant the spell, a thick wyvern tail, as wide as a thigh, moved like it was alive. The rock in front shattered, and pieces flew toward Joanna. But just in time, the 'Shield' spell worked, and a glowing hexagonal shield appeared, blocking the debris from hitting her.

 "Thank you, Lord Al."

Al couldn't do anything from the front lines. He quickly backed away to where Patricia was, hiding behind a rock.

The wyvern let out a loud roar and dragged its body forward, trying to bite Joanna. But she swung her bastard sword down hard at its snout. Blood splattered everywhere.

 'Haste!'

Al's spell caused Joanna's body to glow briefly. The "Haste" spell increased her speed. The wyvern growled low, pulling its head back. Joanna quickly closed in, moving faster than before. As the wyvern tried to lift its head, Joanna, with her bastard sword pointed down, jumped high into the air. With "Physical Boost" enhancing her, she easily reached above the wyvern's head. She aimed for its left eye and swung down the sword. The wyvern twisted, but it was too late--the sword pierced deep into its head.

Surprised, Joanna tried to pull the sword out, but it was stuck. She let go of the hilt and jumped away, drawing her usual sword from her waist.

 "GROOOOAAARRR!"

The wyvern screamed. But its cry was cut short, and it suddenly collapsed, losing all its strength. Seeing this, Joanna cautiously approached to check on the wyvern. Then, with a happy face, she raised her hand.

 "I took it down!"

 "Yay!"

 "Awesome!"

Al and Patricia hugged each other in joy, then quickly pulled away, surprised. They both ran over to Joanna.

 "You're amazing, Ms. Joanna!"

"What are you saying? The amazing part was Lord Al's spell. I just finished off the dying magic beast. And I had your support for that. Plus, that sword is impressive too."

 "You both were amazing!"

Patricia nodded happily as she praised the two of them.

"Well, for a moment, I thought we were in trouble, but we made it through. So, where are we..."

Al glanced around. To the northwest, he spotted an island. From where the three stood, a jagged, half-submerged rock formation stretched north, leading to the island. In the distance, a steep mountain loomed, and atop it, a massive rock with a square tower stood tall.

 "Could that be..."

"That's supposed to be the research tower."

Patricia and Joanna also looked surprised at the size of the rock. It was probably about 500 meters (1,640 feet) wide. The rock was so big that the tower on top looked quite small.

"Was that rock floating in the sky?"

"They say it had a magic tool built into the bottom to make it float, just like the magic circuit. Sir Malachi keeps wondering why it's on the ground."

But how could they even make that huge rock float? Even if they used a 'Fly' magic tool, how many would they need?

'Anyway, let's go check it out! To the research tower!'

Glee urged them to hurry. Even if they were curious, there was nothing they could do. But as Al was about to leave, Joanna, who had somehow pulled out the Bastard Sword, asked what they should do with the wyvern's corpse. If they left it there, it might attract Barbarians and other magic beasts.

Since it could deflect a "Magic Missile," its skin seemed tough, so it might be useful for armor. He had heard that some magic beast meat was tasty. However, since it was clearly a magic beast, Al couldn't use "Animal Transformation" on it. For now, he decided to think about it later and stored it in his magic bag while cooling it with the "Thermos" spell. The wyvern was huge, but he managed to fit it in by bending its tail and folding its wings.

Al placed them on the "Carrier" spell chair and flew back into the sky. The island below looked like two circles, one northeast and the other southwest, connected. The longest part was around 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) long. The northeast circle had steep, high mountains, with a giant flat rock about 500 meters (1,640 feet) wide on top. The reef where they had fought led directly to its base.

From above, he saw the rock's flat top, a 400-meter (1,312 feet) wide circular area surrounded by a stone wall, covered in greenery. In the center stood a stone tower, about 25 meters (82 feet) square and 8 stories tall, with a dull silver sphere at the top. To the north were two large 2-story buildings, each about 80 meters (262 feet) square.

"Since it's called a research tower, I thought it would just be one tower, but this is big enough to fit a whole town!"

 Al exclaimed in amazement.

"It seems they originally planned just the central tower. But then, Sir Tempest decided to use golems to make wine, and he realized he needed this much space for vineyards, storage for the working golems, and a place to brew the wine. Sir Malachi proudly says that the wine made by Sir Tempest is very popular. And since there's so much space, they also built an herb garden, a vegetable garden, and a barn."

Patricia shared what she heard from Malachi, but Al couldn't help but tilt his head in confusion. Did they really just come up with all this on a whim?

"Ancient magicians really think of amazing things... But why in the sky?"

"They thought it would be annoying with too many unwanted guests on the ground."

Al and the others couldn't help but chuckle.

"We can get closer, right? Mr. Malachi, how is it...?"

"Of course. He has a special code for that."

"Alright, then let's go! To the research tower!"
