Volume 11 Chapter 2 Cloud Plain

Volume 11 Chapter 2 Cloud Plain

Al was flying at about 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) above the ground, where the research tower was supposed to be. He looked around at the cloud plain below, which was lit up by the sunset and had a slight orange hue. The view was clear, and there was nothing around. It had been three days since Al and Malachi left the ruined village. Al's 'Fly' speed was approximately 35kmh (21.75 mph), which was a bit faster than what Malachi expected.

Following the instructions, they headed straight south and reached the sea by the afternoon of the first day. They chose a small island without Barbarians to stay for 2 nights. Thanks to the magic bag filled with food and water, they didn't have any trouble. Al was really grateful to Guildmaster Levy for giving him that.

However, a big problem had come up. The Tempest research tower, which should have been visible in this clear view, was nowhere to be seen.

 "Where could it be?"

After stopping in mid-air for the umpteenth time, Al spun slowly around and muttered. To keep warm, he had changed the 'Carrier' spell's disk shape into a sphere, and the 3 of them were squeezed inside, so Al, Patricia, and Joanna were very close to each other. The sphere was only about 2m (7 feet) in diameter. Just turning his head a little meant he could see their faces right next to him.

"Yeah, Sir. Malachi is also muttering that it's strange."

Right now, Malachi's assistant device was a doll golem stored in the magic bag, hanging around Patricia's neck. At first, it was supposed to be Joanna, but she couldn't keep her eyes open when they went up high, so it ended up like this.

'Based on the coordinates we got before, we've definitely gone too far. Is there a problem with Sir. Malachi's position tracking module?'

Even though Glee mentioned the position tracking module, Al didn't really understand it well. But it was clear that something was wrong. Thinking that, Al drew a circle with his finger on his knee. It wasn't the signal they had decided on for Glee, but maybe the feeling would get across.

'Ask Sir Malachi for the current position coordinates.'

As Al relayed this to Glee, Patricia murmured, "It's 24.161530, 4.014.2912, 141.467008." The string of numbers didn't make sense to Al, but hopefully, it meant something to Glee.

 'Looks like it's not wrong.'

The two wondered if they had a way to know their exact location. Al was curious and asked, but it seemed that while it was fine on the surface, it was often unclear underground or underwater. That made it sound tough in ancient ruins. Al felt a bit disappointed.

"What should we do? The sun is starting to set, so we should find a place to sleep for the night, right?"

When Al suggested this, Patricia nodded in agreement. Joanna kept whispering, "Let's hurry down."

'Ally, something is coming out from the clouds to the south.'

 'Sensory Boost'--Enhanced Vision

Al enhanced his vision and stared in the direction Glee pointed. It was about 3 kilometers (2 miles) away. The creature was roughly 10 meters (33 feet) long, with a dark green color, a large lizard head, big bat wings, eagle legs, and a long tail tipped with a sharp spike. The wings were about the same width as its body. It was flying leisurely to the northwest with its wings spread wide.

A young dragon? No, considering its body thickness...

"I think it's a wyvern. It's going into the clouds."

Al dove downward, hoping the wyvern hadn't spotted him. He gained speed quickly, but the wyvern soon shifted its course toward him. It entered the clouds, but Al could still see its faint outline. Though it seemed slow, they were closing in fast. The wyvern was actually flying a bit faster than him.

"I might have to use magic, so I'll change the 'Carrier' spell into a chair shape. It's going to get cold."

 'Magic Power Control.'

Al transformed the spell into a chair with safety bars. Suddenly, the temperature dropped, and a strong wind rushed around them. They continued to descend at a speed that felt like they were falling or flying. Patricia and Joanna were desperately covering their mouths to hold back screams. They broke through the clouds, and the sea spread out before them.

'To the north, there's a small island just to the left of Al.'

"The wyvern is right behind us."

 "Thanks!"

Glee and Patricia shared information about their surroundings with Al. Would they make it to the island? But the wyvern was getting closer, and there was no time to spare.

 'Magic Missile'--Auto Hit

Ten pale blue arrows shot from Al's palm. There was no time to aim, so he used the auto-hit option. He'd recently noticed in his spellbook that other magicians used this option with "Magic Missile," but he'd forgotten about it. While it wouldn't target weak points, it would hit the center of the body. The ten "Magic Missiles" struck the wyverns chest, but the thick hide absorbed the impact, causing almost no damage.

 "Wyvern, that didn't do anything!"

At Patricia's panicked shout, Al clicked his tongue. The surface of the sea was getting closer. Simply flying wouldn't help; he would just get caught. He flew low, just above the water, and turned left.

 'Flash!'

A huge splash erupted. The wyvern chasing right behind Al was blinded by 'Flash' and seemed to dive into the water. Taking advantage of this, Al flew straight to the small island Glee had told him about. In no time, he reached the rocky reef surrounding the tiny island. The rocks jutted out from the water, taller than Al and the others. He quickly dove behind a rock and looked back at the wyvern. It was about 200 (656 feet) meters away.

 "GROOOAARRR!"

The wyvern burst out over the sea. Al quickly canceled the "Carrier" spell.

 "Finally on land!"

Joanna's voice was lively, a big change from before. But her legs were still shaking.

 "Ms. Joanna, protect Patricia!"

Al said this as he ran over the rocks washed by the sea, heading towards a shadow of another rock.

 "Got it!"

 'Physical Boost!'

Joanna pulled out the sword Al had given her, shielding Patricia. The wyvern looked around in the air and quickly spotted Al and the others. They might have hidden with the "Illusion" and "Conceal" spells. Al felt a bit regretful. But when facing the wyvern, a magic beast, he also felt uneasy relying only on those spells. He waited behind the rock for the wyvern to come closer. The wyvern was supposed to attack with physical strikes, not breath attacks. If he stayed calm and timed it right...

The wyvern approached with a loud roar. Its flying speed was increasing. At its current speed, it could cover about 80 meters in ten seconds. Waiting until it was 30 meters (98 feet) away to cast a spell wouldn't be fast enough. Al started to time his spellcasting when the wyvern was about a hundred meters away.

 'Magic Tornado!'

A pale blue light shot from Al's hand. The thread-like light hit the wyvern's body about 20 meters (66 feet) away from him. It was a relief that the wyvern was flying straight towards him.

Now, a storm of pale blue light surrounded the wyvern.
