Volume 4 Chapter 2 Job Interview Part I
Al was waiting at the entrance when a man came from inside. He looked to be around 30 years old and was wearing fancy clothes. He walked confidently, and Al thought this man might be Eric, so he bowed.
"You must be Al, the one introduced by the Adventurer's Guild. I hear you're an apprentice magician. How many spells can you use?"
The man approached quickly and asked.
"My name is Al. I can use Light spells, Magic Sense spells, Magic Missile spells, and a few other spells."
"A few other spells, huh? That's a convenient way to put it. Well, that's good enough; you can use enough spells as a magician."
Al thought it was normal not to reveal all the spells he could use as an adventurer, but the man seemed a bit dissatisfied. When Al stayed silent, the man continued speaking.
"Let's see those 3 spells you mentioned. Come with me."
The man led Al to the courtyard. There were about 3 men and women there, and when Al and the man entered, everyone turned to look at them. The man didn't pay attention to their gazes and stopped almost in the middle. He pointed to one wall. There was a small shield hanging there, covered in scratches.
"Try using the Magic Missile spell on that."
"Uh, okay."
The distance to the shield was about 5 meters. Al stretched out one hand.
'Magic Missile' – Focused Power
Since he was going to show his magic, he raised his voice and cast the spell differently than usual. A glowing arrow-like light shot from his palm. It hit the shield with a high-pitched metallic sound and then disappeared.
"Um? What was that chant (command word) just now? And the sound felt a bit different too..."
The man seemed to feel something was off and thought for a moment. However, he lightly shook his head.
"Well, whatever, it's still Magic Missile. Just one, but it flies properly, so I'll give you that. Now, let's move on to the Light spell. Make that shield shine just like before."
Al heard this and internally shouted, "Oh no!" He had only shot one because he thought it was simple to use the Focused Power option since there was only one target, but he realized that the man, who seemed to be named Eric, was trying to measure skill based on the number of shots. If he failed this, it might be better to discuss retaking the test. That thought crossed his mind, but the task had already moved on to the next one. He decided to switch gears and use the Light spell first.
The Light spell's effect duration simply increases as skill level goes up. He usually adjusted it with options to increase brightness, so it had been a while since he used it at default.
"Light!"
Light lit up the surface of the shield. The man stared at the light.
"The brightness is fine. Will it last for about 3 hours?"
Al tilted his head at that question. He remembered that when he first learned this spell, he had recast it in the middle of the night, but recently he had been turning it off himself before the effect ended in the morning, so he didn't know how long it would last.
"Maybe it'll be okay until morning."
The man looked at Al with a puzzled expression at his uncertain answer. It made sense that if he was using the Light spell for a night watch, he would be concerned about how long it lasted. Al felt a bit regretful that he hadn't measured it properly.
"Alright. If we measure it like this, we'll know. The evening bell just rang. Leda!"
The man called out to one of the 3 people who were probably practicing spells nearby. She had light blue eyes that gave a slightly cold impression. Her beautiful silver hair was tied back, and she seemed a bit older than Al.
"Yes, Sir Fitz."
"Record when this light disappeared. Also, get the others to help bring that box."
She bowed to the man, then called out to the other 2 in the courtyard and hurried off through the back door. The man seemed to be called Fitz and was different from Eric. After a while, the 3 of them returned carrying a large, covered wooden box. They placed the box in front of Al and bowed again before going back to their original spot.
"Now, it's time for the Magic Sense test. Find the magical items in this box."
Saying that, Fitz opened the lid of the box. Inside were many small items made of wood and metal, the purpose of which was not clear. There were so many items that if Al just used 'Magic Sense,' he might miss the weakly glowing ones hidden in the shadows.
'Magic Sense'
'Sensory Boost'──Enhanced Vision
As Al began to search through the box, Fitz warned him not to handle the items roughly. Al replied that he understood and started pulling out items that emitted a pale blue light in response to Magic Sense. After about ten minutes, Al had taken out 13 items, each with a different shape.
"I was able to sense this many."
Fitz watched the scene with curiosity. Then he also began to chant the Magic Sense spell and started checking the items that Al had taken out.
"You relied on your intuition halfway through, didn't you? No... did you ask someone beforehand which ones were magic tools?"
Saying this, Fitz looked around. He seemed to have an idea when he saw 3 men and women.
"Did you bribe the apprentices or something?"
Al stared at Fitz, confused. The 3 men and women looked just as puzzled. However, Fitz raised his voice angrily at that moment.
"If not, there's no way you could identify so many items so quickly from over a hundred. Also, among the 3 items you proudly showed, 3 are not magic tools. There must have been some mistake with a code or something. Otherwise, this situation doesn't make sense. Who is it? Who told this Al person whether these are magic tools for money?"
