Volume 4 Chapter 1 At The Adventurer's Guild
It had been a few days since Orson left, and Al was visiting the Adventurer's Guild in the evening after finishing his work for the day. While he wasn't struggling financially, he couldn't afford to buy a spellbook anytime soon, and there was no progress towards his goal of discovering ancient ruins in the city. He was looking for something to break the current situation.
"You're Al, right? What brings you here today?"
At the Adventurer's Guild counter was Quinta, the same woman who was there when he first arrived. Although the guild was crowded in the morning, there were few adventurers visiting at this time.
"Yeah, I'm looking for a good job."
Quinta raised her eyebrows in surprise. She had occasionally heard his name mentioned as a promising newcomer who was making a name for himself. While she didn't know the details of his earnings, she assumed he wasn't struggling for work.
"Aren't you doing well?"
"Well, Mr. Orson has been teaching me a lot, and I can manage to get by..."
Al said this while gazing at the wooden plaques with job offers.
"Oh, I see. I heard that he's been more energetic lately since he started working with a young adventurer. It was you, wasn't it? That's great to hear. Thank you. I was worried about him."
Quinta nodded a few times as she listened to Al's story, but then she tilted her head. She knew Orson well. He was an experienced adventurer. If he was working with him, he was probably earning a good income.
"Mr. Orson left a few days ago on another job, so I'm on my own now. I came here because I heard there are many ancient ruins in this city. So, I want to explore as much as possible. That's why I'm looking for a job like that."
Finally, Quinta understood. She was grateful to Al for Orson's renewed energy and decided to introduce him to a good job.
"If you're willing to work as a magician, I have a good one. It's an escort job for a merchant caravan to the border villages ahead. You want to travel to those places, right?"
Al's eyes lit up, and he rushed to the counter where Quinta was.
"Yes, that's exactly what I was looking for. But as a magician? Can't I be a scout?"
Al asked with a thoughtful expression. He wasn't yet confident enough to work as a magician.
"There are plenty of applicants for warriors and scouts, and the guild can't introduce them without more experience. However, magicians are in short supply everywhere. Can you use the Magic Sense spell? Then I can introduce you as an apprentice. There are other magicians, so you can learn by observing them. But don't expect a big income."
Hearing the word "apprentice," Al felt a bit relieved. While Orson and others had praised his magic, he didn't have a proper master, and he wasn't very confident. Working with other magicians would also allow him to learn how to behave during escort jobs, which was beneficial for him.
"Of course. Please."
"Well then, can you come by after work tomorrow? I'll ask if they can hire you by then. For now, just try it out. You can negotiate for a long-term contract later."
Al nodded eagerly. It was his first job as a magician. He was very excited.

The next evening, after finishing work early, Al visited the Adventurer's Guild. Quinta told him to look for a magician named Eric at the northernmost street. According to Quinta, the contract for the escort mission was with the trading guild, but Eric would be Al's direct superior for this job. If Eric didn't think Al was useful, he wouldn't hire him.
Al quickly found the mansion. It was a grand house that looked like it belonged to a noble, surrounded by a wall, and there was a guardhouse at the iron gate where an older man, who seemed to be a servant, was sitting.
"Hello. Is this Sir Eric's mansion?"
"Yeah, it is. What do you want? If you're here to be his apprentice, you can't just come in. Go away."
The servant had a terrible, raspy voice. His words were slurred and hard to understand.
"Um, my name is Al. I was sent by the Adventurer's Guild and told to come here about the escort mission."
The man looked at Al as if he were judging him.
"I see. They said you were a young man, but you really are young. You can use magic, right? Eric is a strict person. If you can't use it and you're lying about it, you should turn around and go home now."
Al smiled brightly and replied, "I'm fine." The man watched Al for a while with a puzzled look, but then sighed as if he had no choice, opened the iron bars, and let Al in.
