Volume 3 Chapter 5 Big-Mouthed Lizard Hunt - The Next Day

The next day, it was pouring rain from the morning. Al felt a bit anxious because he needed to earn money for armor, but there was nothing he could do about it.

"Well, don't be so down. There are other ways to make money."

Under the eaves, Al and Orson sat side by side, tending to their weapons. Nearby, innkeeper Louren and her daughter Iris did laundry. While Al sharpened his knife, Orson cheerfully wiped oil off his sword.

"Thanks, yeah... I know, but still."

"Sometimes a break is nice. You can drink during the day. How about a drink? If you're short on cash, I can lend you a little."

Orson pretended to hold a cup with one hand, but Al didn't look up and kept sharpening his knife. Orson smiled lightly at Al's focused expression.

"By the way, that Physical Boost yesterday was amazing. I thought you could only use it on yourself."

When Orson brought up magic, Al nodded eagerly and suddenly became talkative.

"Yeah, but it's tricky to use on others. If you're just boosting one action like lifting or running, it's fine, but in a fight, it gets complicated, so it might not be very useful if you don't do it yourself."

"Is that so? With that spell, I could..."

Orson tapped his left ankle, which was stiff from a monster's attack. Though the injury had healed, the bone was crooked, leaving his ankle immobile.

"Sorry, but I can't help with that."

 Al shook his head.

"I knew it... I'm sorry, I really did. But I just couldn't give up. I had to ask."

 "Wasn't a healing spell enough?"

"Yeah, it seems like only a high-level regeneration spell can do it. A powerful spell that can regrow an arm that was torn off in one shot. Only saints at the church in the royal capital can use it."

 "I see..."

Al pressed his thumb against the knife blade to check its sharpness. Satisfied, he wiped it with an oily rag and sheathed it.

"You mentioned you were practicing another spell. What kind is it?"

"Yeah, it's called the Carrier spell. I think the shopkeeper said it's pretty popular, but I've only seen 2 people use it."

"What kind of spell is it?"

 'Carrier'

Al chanted the spell when Orson asked him. A black, semi-transparent disk appeared in front of him.

 "What's this disk?"

When Orson tried to touch the disk, it seemed to react and moved slightly away from his hand.

"You can place items on it. If someone else reaches for it, it moves away from them."

Al placed the sheathed knife on the disk. As Orson reached out as instructed, the disk moved away from his hand.

 "Hmm."

After Orson muttered that, he quickly moved his hand. The disk tried to move, but by then, the knife that was on the disk was already in Orson's hand.

"It's not that fast, huh? It seems easy to grab from the side."

At Orson's words, Al nodded repeatedly.

"Exactly. When moving through a crowd, the disk can get stuck. If that happens, you need to return quickly, or it will disappear. It's doable outdoors, but tricky in busy areas."

"I see. How much weight can it hold?"

"I heard it can handle about 50 kg ( 110 lbs), but I haven't tested that myself."

"50 kg, huh? That's a bit over, but can I ride it?"

Orson is probably way over that. With his gear, he might weigh double that. But Al thought it could be interesting to carry someone.

"Hey, let's give it a try. Just wait a moment."

 'Carrier'

Al canceled the disk for the Carrier and recast the spell. The disk turned brown, resembling a legless chair with a backrest and armrests. Al placed his hands on it for support.

"Wow, you can change the color and shape?"

"Yeah, I tried it, and it worked. Its not too complicated, and you can shape it in various ways. Just sit on it gently at first."

Orson placed his hands on the armrests of the floating chair Al provided, pulled it closer, and sat down. As soon as he did, the chair slowly touched the ground and stopped moving.

 "Haha, it's too heavy!"

Seeing the chair touch the ground made Al laugh. Louren and Iris, who were watching, also chuckled.

"Ugh, it might mean that it can't carry people after all."

Orson said that back, so Al asked Louren and Iris if they wanted to switch places and sit down.

 "Huh? No, that's... a little..."

 "I want to try!"

While Louren, the mother, hesitated, her daughter Iris raised her hand cheerfully.

 "Okay, go ahead."

Al happily approached Iris, offering one hand while holding the Carrier chair with the other. Iris took his hand and carefully sat down. The chair shook lightly but, unlike with Orson, it floated gently in the air without dropping.

"Wow, a person can sit on it. Amazing!"

Al tightly grasped Iris's hand and shouted in excitement. Iris blushed and nodded, while Orson and Louren looked on in surprise.

 "Alright, Iris, hold on tight."

Al bounced lightly and spun around the narrow courtyard, and the chair Iris was sitting on floated along with him.

"Ahh, it moves on its own! This is fun!"

Iris shouted as she gripped the armrests of the chair. Al and Iris enjoyed themselves like that for a while.

"Make sure to keep up. It doesn't seem to shake too much, so there are different ways to use it, right?"

After a while, Orson asked Al with a hint of envy.

"Yeah, I thought it might be a dud, but it might not be so bad after all."

Al said this while thinking about various possibilities.
