Volume 12 Chapter 22 Jormungand
The enormous size that surpasses the norm has an effect similar to a kind of immortality.
For example, even if you have an extremely strong sword, if the width of the blade is only as thin as a single sheet of paper, it's pointless no matter how sharp it is. It's like dealing 10,000 damage to an enemy with 100 million HP――it's almost meaningless.
In that sense, the weapon Durandal is probably well-suited to take on Jormungand.
Durandal is a sword that can expand and contract freely.
"Woooaaaahhh!!"
I used my gravity magic to jump around in mid-air and enlarged Durandal to its limit, striking it down in one swift motion.
Durandal is a sword that can expand and contract freely. If I want it to, it can stretch out indefinitely and become incredibly heavy. So, I should be able to deal sufficient damage to Jormungand.
However, I know that even with a well-suited giant body, things don't always go as planned.
There was Surtr, who moved at an unnatural speed despite its massive size. And there was Fenrir, who endured despite being cut down multiple times.
So, I wondered if my attack would even hit properly...
But Durandal sliced through Jormungand's body in 2 clean cuts.
"Huh?"
I was stunned, thinking that something must have gone wrong, but Durandal had landed a clean hit.
It had sliced through Jormungand's body, and then, with the same momentum, Durandal passed through the body.
"U, o, o, o. Is, is this it? Is it over...?"
No, on the contrary, this might just be the start of his revival. I must remain vigilant.
As I thought, I landed on top of a nearby pile of rubble. Then, I stared at Jormungand, wondering, "What's going to happen...?"
"...?"
Jormungand, which should have been cut in 2, was moving normally. He reacted to my attack, slowly turning his massive body towards me.
"Ah, that thing? I... cut it, didn't I? Why is it still moving? This is weird."
But it wasn't just a simple cut. It was bisected, like a human whose head had been severed by a wire. I couldn't understand why it was still moving.
But Jormungand kept moving. He moved towards me, swinging his enormous body.
I quickly used gravity magic to fly sideways, dodging it by a hair's breadth.
The scene was catastrophic. Starting from where I had been standing, the city was being destroyed in a fan-shaped pattern. Buildings far away were collapsing easily, and I couldn't even hear the sound of destruction.
The phrase "giant monster" didn't even begin to describe this scene. The sight of a city being destroyed with a single swing of his body was something out of mythology.
"...This is the World Snake Jormungand, isn't it...!"
I licked my lower lip, thinking about how to take down the enemy in front of me.
The enemy was enormous. Extremely enormous. And a simple attack wouldn't work. Not even bisecting it would do.
I needed to think. Think, analyze, experiment, and learn.
I smiled wryly to myself.
"No wonder it's the great monster of Ragnarok. An enemy that I can't beat has appeared, and it's making a mess."
This was unbearable. I muttered to myself, and flew through the air again.
First, I wanted to know why bisecting it didn't work. I thought about this as I flew around, waiting for Jormungand's gaze to shift away from me, and then landed on his body.
As expected, with this huge body and scales, Jormungand didn't notice my landing.
I thought, "Heh, perfect," and stabbed my Durandal.
"Zub," Durandal pierced through a part of the giant scales and dug into the meat inside. From there, it injected power and started cutting.
I confirmed the situation and my eyes widened in surprise.
"...Hey, hey. It's going to heal from the cut end, this guy!"
Incredible regenerative power. It seemed that Jormungand could heal his wounds and restore his body to perfect condition, no matter how badly it was injured.
So, what could I do? Try to cut it down quickly before it could heal? No, that was unrealistic given the massive body. Then...
As I thought about it, Jormungand's body suddenly started moving violently.
"Whoa, wait!"
I panicked and used gravity magic to jump back and create some distance.
But I was a bit too slow.
Jormungand's light, swift movement sent me flying with great force, and I felt like I was hit by a building.
"Wahhh?"
Despite using gravity magic to control my fall, I was flying in an unknown direction at an incredible speed.
As I was tossed around by Jormungand's movements, I frantically activated Repulsion to deflect the countless debris.
But the impact was too intense. Even if I could deflect most of it, there was nothing I could do when a building-sized object came flying at me.
"Gggh, this, this, is crazy!"
Using Anahata Chakra to regenerate my body multiple times, I finally crashed into something. I felt my entire body's bones shattering as I bounced off and flew away from the ground.
So, after struggling for a bit, I finally regained my composure. I used gravity magic to blow away the rubble that had piled up on my body and stood up.
As I looked around, I muttered to myself.
"This is... bazaar..."
We were fighting in a circus, but this was the aftermath. I let out a sigh, thinking about how far I had been blown away.
Next, I brushed off the dirt on my body and took another look at Jormungand.
He was enormous. Too enormous. Just the size alone was intimidating.
In the past, I had fought against dragons, enjoying the tough but exhilarating battles. Earth dragons, wyverns, fire dragons――all were over 10 meters long, making them formidable foes.
But Jormungand was on a different scale. He was over 10 kilometers long, his massive body easily covering the entire city.
As I gazed at him, I thought to myself.
"Wait, didn't he get even bigger just now...?"
Compared to the city, his enormous form was overwhelming. But just a while ago, his height was comparable to the Demon King's castle on the mountain. Now, it had surpassed that.
The word "growth" flashed through my mind. Fenrir had grown stronger while fighting, regaining its original form and power. It was likely the same for Jormungand.
And that's surely the case with Jormungand as well. It is true that a huge body of more than a dozen kilograms is huge, but that is not enough to enclose the world.
So, this must be his smallest form. Right now, Jormungand was at his weakest.
"Ah, I see. This is an enemy that'll break my bones. I'm going to take down an enemy that makes me feel like a tiny bean. Haha, oh man, what's going on, I wonder?"
I place my hand on my chest. Thud, thud, my heart is racing, and I can't help but smile.
"I'm so excited to fight an enemy like this, even if it's a desperate battle. It's pointless to try to stay calm. Against an enemy that can effortlessly knock me back, I'm still thrilled."
I'm sure this personality of mine will never change, even if I die. I get pumped up when facing a strong enemy, feel the rush of battle, and can't help but challenge them.
I tightly close my eyes.
It's already too late. This is who I am. I'll have to live with it for the rest of my life. But, as it is, there's one thing I need to think about.
"I can't win against him alone."
I can deal damage, but to confirm the damage, I need volume.
I can manipulate gravity and break Jormungand's flesh. However, since my body is too small, no matter how hard I hit or pierce, it's pointless.
For example, if I were to cut it in 2, I'd need to prevent the cut ends from healing and reconnecting. I'd need to pull them apart and make them scatter.
I can't do that alone. Gravity magic can't differentiate between the top and bottom halves of a single body. Even if I try to fix him with rubble, Jormungand is too heavy, and it's impossible.
So, at the very least, I need a bigger attack method.
A bigger method. A bigger ally.
"Hey, Wade-kun. What a coincidence."
I turn around, and there stands the guy I've been waiting for.
"Clay! What have you been doing, wandering around this wilderness? It's been tough getting here, you know!"
As I jump at him, messing up his hair, Clay bursts out laughing, "Hahahahaha!" and stops me.
"Sorry about that! I was dragged around by Mudi-san and investigated all sorts of things."
"Mudi?"
"Yeah, you idiot disciple. It seems like Surtr and Fenrir were defeated."
Mudi appears behind Clay, looking carefree. Then, he says, "What a pain in the neck, Jormungand... Ugh, what a hassle," and gazes at him with his hand on his forehead.
"What's with the investigation?"
"Well, it's all sorts of things. Like Hel's Demon King Castle, the Demon King Army's documents room, and all that. I finished investigating and then met up with you guys."
"Huh?"
I'm concerned about the situation, but I don't have time for that right now. Jormungand, who sent me flying, is using some kind of vision to find me and is moving towards us.
"Well, that's good. If Mudi is with Clay, that's just perfect. You guys, help me take him down."
"Of course, Wade-kun. But... that thing is incredible. It makes Typhon look like a small fry."
"No choice, huh, stupid disciple? I can't take down that huge monster alone, so I have to get serious as a master."
Clay smiles reassuringly, and Mudi nods reluctantly, looking like he's putting on an act. Mudi wants to blast him just once, but since he's not rejecting the request, it's unusual, so I'll let it slide this time.
"Alright, let's go. We'll hunt the snake together, 3 of us."
I face Jormungand. The world snake is growing his massive body even further, and is approaching us with tremendous force.
