Chapter 46 Mutant Monsters And Disturbing Shadows
"Weird monsters appearing?"
"Yes, Adel-san."
One day,
The informant Fran visited the Silver Apple Inn.
The information Fran brought was about strange monsters appearing in the grasslands outside the capital.
I urge Fran to tell me more.
"It's becoming a bit of a topic at the Adventurer's Guild. They say mutant versions of monsters like Giant Orcs, Dread Wyverns, and Wild Boars have been spotted."
"What do you mean by 'mutant versions' exactly?"
"They're mostly black."
"...Black?"
"Yes, and they seem to be stronger than the usual monsters."
Fran takes a sip of the tea Maia prepared and lets out a sigh.
"By the way, Fran, why did you bring this up to us?"
"...Do you remember when I mentioned not being able to get close to the royal palace before?"
"Yeah, I remember they said there's a barrier set up, and only those recognized by the royal family can enter the palace."
"Yeah, so since Fran can't get in, Fran was checking out all the stuff being brought to the palace from the outside."
"Stuff being brought to the palace... Could there possibly be mutant monsters among them...?"
Fran nods silently in response to my words.
"Fran doesn't know what they're being used for, or if we're just investigating. Unfortunately, Fran can't tell. But since it's related to the royal family, I thought it best to report to Adel-san right away."
"I see, thanks."
"No problem. It's all in a day's work for Adel-san."
With that, Fran chuckles softly.
"Well then, I'm off. I'll report back if I find out anything new about the royal family."
"Okay."
After Fran leaves, I discuss the current information with Maia and Teti.
"However, a mutant species... That's a story I've never heard before."
"If the royal family is involved, it's intriguing."
"What should we do, Adel-sama?"
"That's right..."
The grassland Fran mentioned is not far from here (Silver Apple Inn).
"All right, let's go check out the monsters ourselves."
"Yes." "Yeah."
The three of us nodded to each other and decided to head to the grassland Fran told us about.
* * *
"Adel-sama, you're amazing. Defeating that many monsters in such a short time."
"I haven't even defeated half as many as you have..."
Maia and Teti said as I looked up at the pile of monsters.
It's easier to defeat monsters using techniques like the Wind God Sword when facing a group of them.
When we arrived at the grassland Fran mentioned, we quickly found a mutant species of monsters.
As Fran reported, it was clearly stronger than the usual monsters of the same species.
And one more thing...
The monster of the mutant species was surrounded by a black mist-like substance.
"I see, so that's what 'black' means. But this is..."
I pondered and contemplated.
Then, Teti tugged at the edge of my clothes.
"By the way, you mentioned something from the past before. The black clothes you wear for work, Adel, were given to you by Maia, right?"
"Yeah, that's right."
"Hmm. You're still wearing it for work now, Adel and Maia are so lovey-dovey."
""Eh...""
Those words made Maia and me freeze in place.
It was a word Teti had never used before.
"Is that how it looks, Teti-chan?"
"Yeah, it does."
For some reason, Maia seemed happy, and Teti seemed a bit displeased.
"Hey, Teti. Where did you learn that word you just used?"
"...? The word 'lovey-dovey'?"
"Yes."
"I learned it from Fran."
Fran... It seems like she is sharing unnecessary information.
Next time, I'll make sure to say something about it.
Ignoring it might lead to Teti teaching even more inappropriate things.
"Anyway..."
I glance back at the remains of the monster that turned into a mountain.
That black mist surrounding the mutant monster.
It resembled the black miasma that Marianne, who attacked the orphanage before, and Marc Richard, who was behind a series of incidents, were enveloped in.
――Does that mean it's a demon's...? But why...?
I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease there, unable to find an answer even after thinking about it.
