Chapter 17 The Dire News Brought By The Informant Fran

"Adel-san. You sure do love apples as always, huh..."

In the afternoon, in the back alleys of the capital city.

Leaning against a wall and enjoying his favorite apples, Adel is approached by a petite girl wearing a hood.

After giving a wry smile, the girl reveals her fang and then removes her hood, extending her hand towards Adel.

"Adel-san, it's been a while. Fran is happy to see you. It seems like you've been causing quite a stir again recently, huh?"

"Yeah. There are still plenty of people I need to crush."

 "Haha, as relentless as ever."

Adel also extends his hand, shaking hands with the girl.

 --The Informant Fran.

 That's her name.

Adel has known Fran since he started his work as a revenge agent.

Despite her cheerful demeanor, she holds the title of one of the top informants in the capital city of Ridale.

 "Is Maia-san doing well?"

"Oh, she's doing well. She has been feeling lonely because you haven't been showing up at the tavern."

"Fran has been busy lately. It's because someone somewhere asked Fran to 'investigate the royal family's situation,' making unreasonable demands."

 "I'm sorry about that."

Fran lets out a sigh like a cat and smiles wryly.

Although she doesn't have beast ears growing from her head like a beastman.

"So, did you find out anything about the royal family matter?"

"The security is tight, so I haven't found out much yet. It's like dealing with Adel-san when it comes to women."

 "What do you mean?"

When I asked again, Fran let out another sigh.

"It seems like Maia-san is also having a hard time with that..." she muttered, but I didn't understand the meaning.

"Anyway, let me know if you find out anything about the royal family."

Fran replied, "Understood," before continuing to speak.

"Nevertheless, you're still concerned about the royal family. You should just leave things like chasing it out alone, Adel-san."

"It's not going well. Lately, I've been meeting a lot of people involved with the royal family. If the royal family is up to something, I want to know about it."

"Is it because Adel-san usually runs the tavern? "

"Yeah. Taverns gather information. People tend to talk more gossip when they have alcohol. Although, Maia also wanted to run the tavern."

"Haha. You really care about Maia-san, huh?"

 "Well, kind of..."

It was about a month ago when I asked Fran to investigate the royal family.

Ever since King Charles banished me a few years ago, there haven't been any major political movements.

However, with many recent targets having ties to the royal family, I sense a tense atmosphere.

That's why I wanted to understand the situation, but according to Fran, there hasn't been any progress so far.

"So, what brings you here today? You didn't just come to ask about the royal family, did you?"

Fran brought it up, and I decided to get to the point.

"I actually want you to investigate a child."

 "A child?"

 "Yeah. A beastman child."

"Oh, really. Is there some kind of special reason?"

 I nodded at Fran's words.

What I want her to find is the beastman sl*ve girl I encountered on the way to the Lowenthal merchant guild the other day at Marie's request.

At that time, I realized the girl was being mistreated in a clearly terrible environment, but I could only take temporary measures to head to the target of execution.

I had planned to urge her to visit my tavern, the Silver Apple Inn, and listen to the details of the situation when we met in person, but that girl has not shown her face even after about a week has passed.

 "I see. A sl*ve's child, huh."

"Maybe I'm being conceited, but when I told the beastman child to come to the tavern, she seemed happy. Yet, she didn't show up at the tavern. I can't help but think she might be caught up in something bad."

"But why are you trying to support that child? Adel-san just bumped into her on the street, right?"

"Even so. I'm not skilled enough to overlook someone who may have unreasonable problems and sleep soundly."

"Sigh... It's not about being skilled, I just think Adel-san is too kind-hearted. Well, but yeah... If Adel-san wasn't like that, Fran would probably be dead in the back alleys of the slums by now."

Fran said with an exasperated tone but continued with a smirk.

"Alright. I'll take on that request. Fran also owes Black-Robed Executor-sama a debt that can't be repaid."

 "I'm grateful."

I detailed to Fran about the time I met a beast girl, her appearance, and other characteristics, and decided to receive a report later.

--Two days later, Fran rushed into the Silver Apple Inn.

 "Fran-chan?"

"Oh, Maia-san, long time no see. But sorry, I have something urgent to tell Adel-san now."

"What's wrong, Fran? Did you find something?"

Fran seemed flustered, confirming that only Maia and I were in the tavern.

 And then--

"Adel-san, it's bad. If things continue like this, that girl in question will die."

She quickly delivered the message like that.
