Volume 3 Chapter 20 The Guildmaster and the Useless Dog Maid's Little Trip III
I came to the floating city for sightseeing with Frederica.
We went to the hotel where we would stay today... but...
"W-What!? Our reservation isn't made!?"
At the hotel reception, Frederica raised her voice.
The front desk guy shrugged his shoulders, looking sorry.
"I'm really sorry, Lady Frederica..."
Frederica spoke in a rushed, worried voice.
"Sorry won't help. Find another room right now!"
"Well... all rooms are full..."
"Wha...!?"
Summer is coming soon.
Many tourists would visit at this time.
"I-Is there another hotel in the same chain?"
"This time of year, it's rare to have any openings. Inns and hotels are all full."
"No way..."
Frederica said, dropping her spirits.
We just arrived for the trip, and now there's no hotel for us.
"...Sorry, Master. The hotel wasn't booked. So, today we'll have to go back the same day..."
"Don't worry. Let's go."
"Okay..."
I went outside with Frederica.
The sun was starting to set.
"The carriage... is in 3 days. Until then... what should we do? Walk? Or call the handy flying carriage (Vivre)?"
"No need. We're here."
"Here? Eh? This place is...?"
We were at one of the hotels inside Evashima.
"Is this not the biggest fancy hotel in the city...? What are we doing here?"
We entered the entrance and headed to the reception.
"Sir Act, we've been expecting you."
The receptionist smiled warmly and spoke to me.
"Mr. Act! Long time no see!"
A young man in a suit came closer with a smile.
"Thelma. Long time no see."
I shook hands with Thelma.
"You been doing well?"
"Yes! Thanks to Mr. Act, I'm having a great time working!"
"I didn't do anything."
"No, without you, becoming the manager of such a big hotel would have been impossible!"
Now, Thelma says,
"I've prepared the top-floor room for you. Please, come up!"
"Sorry for calling on short notice. I'll pay extra, so please forgive me."
Thelma quickly shakes her head.
"NO WAY! I won't accept money from Mr. Act! Please relax and enjoy your stay!"
"I see. Thanks."
I place my hand on the stunned mutt's head and say,
"Let's go."
We head to the magic elevator.
It uses floating magic to zoom straight to the building's top floor.
By the way, it was made by Rita, a genius Magic Tool Craftsman and former Guild Member.
After a short while, we reach the hotel's top floor.
"The manager from before...?"
"That's Thelma. I kicked her out of the guild 8 years ago. Don't you remember?"
"...Sorry, I didn't pay much attention back then."
It was only recently that he started caring about work.
"So... does that mean you booked a hotel managed by a former Guild Member?"
"No. When I found out no reservation was possible, I contacted Thelma with a Communication Magic Item."
"Th-then... even though all hotels were full, you managed to get a room without a reservation? T-that's amazing... as expected of the Master."
I open the room door and step inside.
"Wow...! Look, Master...! It's a fancy room!"
She shows her dog ears and tail, wagging them busily.
That Thelma.
She went and prepared such a great room.
Even though I said any room would do...
This whole floor, as big as the Guild Hall at the Gem of Heavenly Gift, seems to be rented for free.
"Staying in this room for free... Master, your connections are amazing!"
Frederica's eyes sparkle brightly.
I sighed and sat down on the sofa.
The west wall of the room was made of glass.
I could see the setting sun clearly.
Frederica sat down next to me.
"According to the brochure, the glass walls change position with magic depending on the time. Morning faces east, evening faces west."
"I see. That's handy."
In the twilight, the sun reflected on the lake, shining like stars.
"...It's beautiful."
"Yeah."
We both stared at the sunset silently for a while.
"Master..."
She plopped her head on my shoulder.
"Sorry. I'm bad at planning."
She was probably apologizing for not booking the hotel.
"Don't worry. Everyone makes mistakes."
"Even Master?"
"Maybe."
"Geez... that's not fair. At least nod here!"
We spent a slow, calm time watching the sunset.

We went to the hotel lounge for dinner.
