Volume 2 Chapter 38 The Hero Party, Babysitting a Child
One day, some time after Guildmaster Act picked up Frederica.
Act came to the town at the border of the Demon King's country, bringing his demon sister Kanaho.
At the training ground for the Hero Party in the North Wall—
A big man with blonde hair, over 180 cm tall, Lawrence, stood there blindfolded.
In front of him was a small girl with green hair.
"Hero Lawrence! You've come! I am the DEMON KING!"
The girl said with wide eyes.
She called herself the Demon King, Kanaho.
"YES! I'm Lawrence! Let's fight FAIRLY!"
But Lawrence was unarmed.
Meanwhile, Kanaho had a sword.
She was serious.
"Here I GO!"
Despite her young voice, she dashed forward with sharp speed.
It was a strike too fast to follow with the eyes.
The speed created a shockwave around them.
Lawrence caught the sharp strike aimed at his neck with his bare hands.
It was a heavy blow.
Lawrence's huge body sank down to his knees.
"So HARD! Is it made of IRON?"
"Nuuun!"
Lawrence, still holding the blade, threw her into the air.
Kanaho flew away easily like a ball.
"What the—!"
But she adjusted her position in the air and stood floating.
"Wow! You can fly in the sky at such a young age! AMAZING, Kanaho!"
"HEY! Lawrence! Right now, I am the DEMON KING! Be more SERIOUS!"
"Ah! You're right! As expected of the DEMON KING!"
"Haha! You're not bad either, HERO! How about THIS!"
Kanaho's magical power surged unusually high.
Normally, magic power is invisible.
But the super-compressed magic shone black.
Kanaho thrust her sword with high speed, using her magic.
"ULTIMA SWORD!"
A torrent of black light was unleashed.
"WHOA! This is BAD!"
Lawrence took a defensive stance with both hands.
The black light hit his body.
Suddenly, everything around him started to disappear.
The ground, the walls, the buildings—all swallowed by darkness.
"Oh! You can still stand after taking my ultimate attack, HERO!"
Lawrence, unharmed and whole.
Not a single scratch on his body.
"Nice job, Kanaho!"
"HEY! I'm the DEMON KING!"
"Right! Good job, DEMON KING!"
"You too! ALRIGHT, I won't lose!"
Kanaho strengthens her body with magic and flies at incredible speed.
Lawrence deflects her powerful slashes that could split the ground, sometimes catching and throwing them.
From a distance, magician Eli, spearman Ulgar, and the hero Higami from the Far East watch this epic battle.
"What is THAT...?"
"That" clearly refers to the oni girl rampaging against Lawrence.
"Can't you see? It's just a CHILD'S GAME."
"NO WAY! What kind of child flies and unleashes slashes that DESTROY everything around them?!"
Eli sets up a barrier to prevent damage to the surroundings.
If he weren't there, the area—including the northern wall—would have been a wasteland by now.
"That girl is SPECIAL."
"Special?"
"It seems she has the BLOOD of the Demon King."
"She's related to the Demon King!? OH NO, that's BAD!"
Higami's face goes pale.
"D-Do we have to KILL her?"
"Don't be STUPID. She's just related to the Demon King. The real troublemaker is the Demon King, not that child."
"That's true... but if she's that strong, what if she turns against HUMANS?"
"Well, you can relax about that."
"Why?"
"The Guildmaster is making sure she gets proper training."
After the mock battle, Kanaho hugs Lawrence.
"Lawrence, you're so STRONG! AMAZING!"
"YES! Kanaho is strong too! AMAZING!"
Lawrence is giving Kanaho a piggyback ride.
That smile was different from a demon that holds hostility toward humans.
Higami is impressed by the pure smile of a child.
"Even though he's so strong, and people look at him strangely, it's no wonder he holds a grudge against humans... AMAZING, the Guildmaster's training methods."
"I agree, but there's no training for the lady, right? She's a HUMAN."
"Yeah, sorry."
Lawrence, who was shouldering a wheelbarrow, comes over here.
"Let's take a walk around the town with Kanaho!"
"Oh, okay, okay, go ahead."
Kanaho pats Lawrence's head.
"I'm HUNGRY!"
"Hah! Then let's head to our FAVORITE restaurant!"
Poof!
Lawrence disappears from the spot.
"Huh!? WHAT!? What happened!?"
"It's teleportation, right? Why are you surprised?"
Lawrence can teleport to any place he knows by cutting through space.
When this is explained, Higami looks at Ulgar in amazement.
"What is it?"
"No... I thought you were a person of common sense, but you're like those humans."
"I feel some serious discontent...!"
"Now, now, Mr. Ulgar. Don't be angry, don't be angry."
Eli follows with a giggle.
But Higami also thought he was dangerous.
After all, he minimized the damage from the dimensional battle earlier.
Higami thought that everyone in the Hero Party, including Eli and Ulgar, was not human.
"By the way, what was that between Kanaho and Lawrence just now?"
"It was a kid's weight game plus a mock battle against the Demon King."
"Mock battle?"
Eli explains:
"The Demon King has special eyes that can sense the flow of magic and copy the opponent's moves. Kana-Kana has the same eyes."
"Wow... that's TROUBLESOME."
The collapse sword that Kanaho drew out was the same one Lawrence used before.
Just by seeing it, she perfectly replicated and showed it.
Kanaho, and the fear of the Demon King, is something I'm finally realizing.
"By fighting with the kids, you gain experience for fighting the Demon King. The kids release stress, so it's a win-win for the Guildmaster."
"I see... but is that really okay? Kana-Kana is part of the Demon King's bloodline, right? What if demons come to kidnap her...?"
"Well, it's probably not okay."
"Why not?"
That's when it happened.
BOOM!
A huge sound echoed through the town.
"W-What was THAT!?"
Eli closed his eyes and said:
"It looks like Mr. Lawrence scattered the demons."
"WAIT, WHAT!? How do you know that!?"
Eli tilted his head, looking confused.
"Uh, it's my clairvoyance magic?"
It was one of the ancient magics that could see far away.
"But ancient magic... that's weird."
"Is something weird? Do you see something weird?"
Higami sighed in exasperation at Ulgar and the others' serious faces.
"Well, yeah. Okay, it's fine. But with Lawrence around, we're SAFE."
"Even when he's not here, the Guildmaster is watching. He'll see through any kidnappers."
"As expected of the GUILDMASTER!"
Higami thought about how strange Lawrence and the others were, but also about how odd that man, Act Age, was too.
