Volume 2 Chapter 12 The Villainous Guildmaster, Comes a Proposal from Headquarters Chief

Volume 2 Chapter 12 The Villainous Guildmaster, Comes a Proposal from Headquarters Chief

About a month had passed since Lawrence and his crew had taken down one of the Four Heavenly Kings.

I was summoned to the Adventurers Guild Headquarters Chief and had once again visited the Royal Capital.

"Act, seems like you've had a TOUGH time."

Seated in front of the sofa set was Daigo, the Chief of the Guild Association's Headquarters.

Though he should have been retired for quite some time, his well-toned physique and sunbaked skin were strikingly characteristic.

"The deeds of you and Lawrence have really polished the image of us Adventurers. Thanks to you, Act. Not bad at all."

On the table lay today's morning edition.

The news of Lawrence's Hero Party defeating the Four Titans was featured daily.

"I didn't take down the Four Titans by myself, though."

"But everyone's saying it's all thanks to YOU. Look here."

Daigo opened the newspaper to reveal an interview article about the Hero Party.

"Thanks to Act from the Adventurers Guild, the Gem of Heavenly Gift, I can now use immense magic without incantation! - Magician Eli"

"Meeting Act changed my destiny. Every day since meeting him has been filled with HAPPINESS. - Healer Luna"

"Act is amazing! Everyone, join the Gem of Heavenly Gift! - Hero Lawrence"

"This sounds like some SKETCHY cult's recruitment ad, doesn't it?"

"But because of it, we've got MOUNTAINS of inquiries about your guild, haven't we?"

Not just other Adventurers Guilds, but from commerce, magic guilds, and even the Magic Tool Guild, there were inquiries longing for talent from the Gem of Heavenly Gift.

"It's a real HEADACHE. They're all still too green to let go."

"But aren't Rozelia and the others READY enough by now?"

"Since I don't want her to LEAVE, I have no intention of forcing myself to go out."

 "I see..."

Daigo spoke to me with a serious expression.

"By the way, Act. There's something I'd like to ASK you."

"If it's about nominating me as the NEXT Headquarters Chief, I have to decline."

He'd been trying to get me to accept this offer for a while now. Daigo wanted to appoint me as the next Headquarters Chief.

"So, you're really NOT going to do it?"

"Yes, I still have things I need to do."

"Uhhh... there's no way you'll CHANGE your mind?"

 "Yes, absolutely NOT."

Daigo twisted his neck with a troubled expression.

"To be honest, you're too TALENTED to just be a Guildmaster."

 "You're FLATTERING me."

"No, I'm serious. You're AMAZING. In just a few years, you've not only made the Guild this big, but you've also DELIVERED results. And the crowning achievement is the Lawrence and his Hero Party."

It was common knowledge that Lawrence and his entire party were from mine.

"With your SKILLS and vision, I'm convinced you could lead the entire Adventurers Guild in the RIGHT direction. If you'd take the seat of Headquarters Chief, Act, I'd be able to REST assured and leave things in your capable hands."

The Headquarters Chief straightened his back and bowed deeply. But my answer was already decided.

 "I DECLINE."

"...The position of Guild Headquarters Chief? Becoming Headquarters Chief at your age would be unprecedented. It would be a tremendous HONOR."

"Even so, I have things I need to DO. I have subordinates I need to PROTECT. While I appreciate the offer, it's simply too SOON for me."

As I bowed my head, Daigo Headquarters Chief sighed.

 "I understand your DECISION."

 "Thank YOU."

"But... Uhm, uuuhhh~ there's no one else I can pass this onto, is there?"

 "Hah," Daigo sighs deeply.

"What about Milia? She's the top S-Class Guildmaster. Isn't she GOOD enough?"

"No good, NO good. That girl's too eager to grow, and she's got a soft spot. She's just not the ACT, you know..."

Daigo gives me a meaningful glance, his eyes flickering.

 "I REFUSE."

 "Come on, really? You SURE?"

 "I'm SURE."

"Ughhhh... Are you SERIOUS? Can't just retire, can I? What am I supposed to DO?"

"Is it too EARLY to retire, then?"

"I want to retire too, you KNOW! Ugh~..."

 Daigo slumps his shoulders, dejected.

"Surely there are other CANDIDATES for Deputy Chief of Headquarters?"

"There are, but none I can TRUST with the job. You're still the ACT, the only one who can become the Chief of Headquarters."

 I sigh and stand up.

"That's all I had to say. EXCUSE me."

"Wait, Act! Can't we TALK a bit more?"

 "I'm BUSY too, you know."

"How about a MEAL then? My treat, at the finest restaurant!"

 "I'm fine, THANKS. Then..."

 I leave the room behind.

"ACT! Keep the position open for me, will ya? You can become the Chief of Headquarters anytime you WANT!"

"Good GRIEF," I sigh as I exit the room.
