Volume 4 Chapter 39 ACT.130 Despair (IV)
As Howard said, behind the abandoned house, several captured townspeople were being protected by the Holy Knights.
One Holy Knight straightened up when he saw Rai's black armor.
Rai waved a hand, telling him to calm down, and spoke to the Holy Knight.
"The girl with chestnut hair and braided pigtails──"
"Ah, over there!"
Following the Holy Knight's pointing, Rai spotted her.She was still unconscious but free from the blindfold and bindings.
Rai felt a small relief from that fact.
This meant they hadn't planted any unnecessary trauma on her and his true identity was still safe.
Quietly, he approached her and gently lifted her up.
"I'm sorry for putting you in danger, Saria."
He whispered an apology that she couldn't hear and told the Holy Knight while still holding her.
"Due to circumstances, I will take her home."
"B-but, we can't──"
The Holy Knight looked confused and stumbled over his words.
It was the job of the Holy Church to conduct interviews and provide care for the captured people afterward.
"She has been asleep this whole time. She likely knows nothing worth questioning, and there shouldn't be any trauma."
Rai gave the Holy Knight a convincing explanation.
However, his true feelings were different.
"Then, she should return to her daily life without knowing about Reincarnators, Chaos Cults, or this incident."
──He wanted her to live a normal life.
A peaceful life, away from the disasters of Reincarnators or the battles with Purge Knights.
"I-I understand. If you, a Purge Knight, say so..."
The Holy Knight straightened up and bowed.
Rai returned his courtesy and walked away while holding her.
"I'm sorry, Saria."
Silently, following the path back to normalcy, he walked gently, careful not to wake her from her drug-induced slumber.
"I was happy about your invitation, but it seems my place isn't there."
Living peacefully and happily with Saria.
Rai thought that was a really wonderful thing.
──But that's not allowed.
This time, there's Dominic, who's been targeting Rai as the Purge Knight.
The deep connection with countless Reincarnators he has killed until now.
Rai felt deeply that the fate built up as the Purge Knight wouldn't let him stay in the sunlight.
And he made a certain decision.
"──I can't stay by your side."
Rai decided to leave Saria and "Donkey's Mane Inn."
The only peace left in the chaos called Rai Conwell.
To throw that away was unmistakably a hopeless despair for Rai.
