"Welcome back!"
Rai is a bit taken aback by Saria's bigger welcome than he expected.
But since it doesn't feel bad, Rai also ends up smiling a little.
"I'm back, Saria. I was away for so long, so here's a souvenir."
When he hands her the package of sweets he was carrying, she blinks in surprise.
"Huh, thanks──wait, Rai's hand!?"
Only now does she notice Rai's splint and bandage on his right arm, letting out a small gasp.
"You're hurt!? T-this is serious!?"
Saria immediately starts flailing around in a panic.
Hearing her commotion out front, a youthful, full-figured woman and a tall, muscular man finally peek out from the back of the shop.
The two──Mr. and Mrs. Kawette──smile wryly at their daughter's fuss.
"Saria, calm down a bit!"
At Mrs. Kawette's voice, Saria jumps a little in surprise.
After her initial shock, she pouts and glares at her mother, but Mrs. Kawette pays it no mind.
"I'm sorry, I ended up breaking a bone. The treatment's done, so if I just rest now..."
He insists he's fine and even waves his arm lightly as if to show there's no pain.
Seeing that, Saria looks relieved.
"That's good. But Rai, you work in administrative stuff at the Holy Church, right?"
"Ah, yeah."
"Is administrative work at the Holy Church dangerous?"
"No, no."
At the Holy Church, Rai Conwell's official assignment is the Fourth Internal Audit Department, which is actually just a made-up division.
Not only Rai, but Purge Knights in general, except in certain cases, hold different positions and titles within the Holy Church so their real identities stay hidden.
By the way, the reason given for his long absence this time is that he was doing an internal audit at a local branch.
"I'm just, um, I tripped on the stairs..."
Saria gives Rai a suspicious look at this obvious cover-up.
"I've noticed this before, but Rai, you get hurt or end up with wounds pretty often, right?"
That comment makes Rai inwardly panic.
"Is administrative work at the Holy Church actually kind of dangerous?"
Rai shakes his head vigorously in denial at Saria's remark.
In reality, Rai is the only one doing dangerous work; the other departments of the Holy Church are calm and safe places.
"Please try to avoid dangerous things. It would make me sad if something happened to you, Rai."
Rai was momentarily at a loss for words at Saria's heartfelt concern for him.
