Volume 3 Chapter 57 ACT.92 The Battle of Leone (IV)
It was too easy.
Unexpectedly easily, the Reincarnator had their breath taken away.
Leone looked down at the corpse, breathing heavily.
"I killed them."
Staring again at the Reincarnator, who had a young face but a monstrous body, she let out a small breath.
"I could kill."
She whispered those words softly, very softly.
From the direction of Rai, her expression was not visible due to the backlight.
"──I can kill."
She murmured as if to hold on to the thought, tightly clenching her hand.
Almost as if she was confirming the feeling of the life she just took.
Then she looked up at the sky.
No, Leone was not looking at the sky.
Beyond the sky, she spoke words towards her younger brother, who was still alive under the same sky.
"Next time, this time for sure, I will kill you. I will cleanse your sins."
Raising her hand that still felt the life she had taken, she made that vow.
* * *
Once the Reincarnator was defeated, the Purge Knight's job was over.
Their transcendental privilege was made specifically for that, so getting involved in anything unrelated to their mission was generally discouraged.
But even so—
There's still duty and compassion to uphold... as a person.
"Ah, sis?"
Three days after the fierce battle, Leone and Rai visited the slum's armorer again.
As they crossed the threshold in their stark black armor, they found the small man who had helped them before—along with two unemployed drifters who had agreed to Leone's request and now lived there.
"Hello, you look well."
"Uh, um."
Unlike before, none of the 3 were drunk, so they were all feeling a bit timid.
The imposing armor was likely one of the reasons.
"I came today because I have a few things to talk about."
The 3 listened intently, holding their breaths as Rai spoke.
"First of all, I want to thank you all very much for your help the other day."
"Thank you so much for your cooperation, all 3 of you! Thank you!"
Rai bowed deeply, and Leone waved her hand cheerfully to show her gratitude.
Then, the next thing Rai brought up was the outcome of the incident, part of it.
"Next, the disposal of the Reincarnator has been completed, and the investigation by the proper authorities regarding the involved parties has begun. Your lives and safety will not be threatened any further."
In this case, the investigation will be conducted by the Kingdom's agency, not by the Holy Church, regarding the Military Police and the Proxima Administration who used the Reincarnator.
Although it seems like they might receive lenient treatment since they are on the same Kingdom side, the reality is quite the opposite.
"It's really helpful to have Sir Belta around in situations like this."
In a soft voice, Leone expresses gratitude to the second-ranked Purge Knight.
They are only thankful for his unique power as the effective leader of the Purge Knights.
"So finally, if it's alright, I was thinking of helping everyone with jobs from the Holy Church."
What Leone conveyed in the end was unexpected for them.
"We can offer you a place to stay that isn't here, you know?"
Providing work and housing from the Purge Knights and the Holy Church.
This could be considered an extraordinary reward for them.
Normally, they would want it desperately.
They stay in the slums because they have no other place to go, not because they want to.
However, they──.
"──We will politely decline."
After a moment of looking at each other, they all answered in unison.
"The reason we are here is also partly our fault."
"So if we go somewhere that doesn't suit us right now, we might fail again."
"──Therefore, we want to keep trying to climb up by ourselves here."
The shabby-looking group said this with a smile.
"Even someone like us could be helped by knights and big sisters, so we can still do our best!"
Their smiles were filled with a sense of confidence, making Rai and Leone feel ashamed for underestimating them a bit.
"──Everyone, let's do our best from now on too! We will do our best!"
