In a back alley of Proxima City, Rai gently laid Leone on the ground.
"Ms. Leone, hold on tight!"
After escaping the headquarters, I had returned control of the body to Rai.
From his perspective, the actions he had taken seemed like reflexes in a critical situation.
Such was the Rai who called out to the exhausted Leone.
Although Rai and Leone had known each other for a long time, this was the first time he had seen her so weak.
Calling out to her more firmly, she finally opened her eyes with a faint "Uh."
"I'm, fine..."
"You're not okay!"
Rai denied her habitual "I'm fine."
"What happened?"
He couldn't understand the sudden and severe cause of Leone's discomfort.
And the words that came out of her mouth were unexpected to Rai.
"A bit, of trauma..."
Rai was familiar with the term psychological trauma.
After all, they were Holy Knights of the Holy Church.
Being a knight of considerable skill serving religion rather than a nation had its own set of circumstances.
Rai knew of many Holy Knights who had suffered psychological trauma.
But it was surprising to him that Leone, who had served as a Purge Knight longer than he had, was carrying such a heavy burden of it.
"I had a brother, you see."
"Yes."
"He had the same cheat, I mean special ability, as this Reincarnator."
Leone's words made Rai catch his breath.
Ignoring him, Leone continued.
"Probably, the enemy's cheat is physical modification. Not regeneration, but reconstructing the wound. And the lost flesh and blood are──"
"──replenished from the outside."
Leone nodded with a twisted face in response to Rai's answer.
That reaction made him feel as if he had seen the cause of her psychological trauma.
"This time, I'm heading to the extermination alone."
Leone was not in any condition to fight properly now.
Just as he was about to stand up, saying so, Leone grabbed Rai's leg and held him back.
"Rai, wait!"
She shifted slightly from her lying position and clung to him.
Her voice was still weak.
Yet, beneath it, a faint resolve began to seep through.
"Let me kill him."
"That──"
It would have been easy for Rai to shake off her hand right then, but he couldn't bring himself to do it.
"If I can't kill him now, then I'm──"
In the next moment, she uttered something shocking.
"When we meet next time, I won't be able to kill my brother, Abel."
