Volume 3 Chapter 34 ACT.69 Unfavorable Enemy Territory (V)
The night had passed.
Before the morning sun began to illuminate the town with its golden light, Rai and Leone set their plans into motion.
They stripped off their black armor, the mark of the Purge Knights, and changed into the plain clothes they had prepared in advance.
Moving stealthily through the shadows, they slipped out of the base through a back door to avoid being seen.
They dashed through the town, sticking to the darkness, their goal the garrison of the constabulary.
──Their target was none other than Jackson Bailey, the leader.
* * *
"I've been checking around various public offices in Proxima to gather intel on Captain Jackson Bailey."
"Ah, I knew it!"
As soon as Rai mentioned his name, Leone replied without missing a beat.
Although she had intentionally refrained from expressing her suspicion about him, her reaction led Rai to believe she also viewed him with some skepticism.
"There's just something off about him!"
──The reason was rather personal.
"So, I was looking into whether any strange incidents have occurred around him, primarily involving public finances or any unusual events."
Rai didn't actually believe he was a Reincarnator.
The reason for his doubt stemmed from the fact that Jackson was a person of considerable power.
While not everything applied, Reincarnators generally had a tendency to *shy away* from being overly attached to power.
This was because they possessed cheats──special abilities that couldn't be taken from them and were immensely valuable assets.
They could do just about anything if they chose, and obtain whatever they desired.
Even if they lost everything, they could rebuild without worry.
──All thanks to their cheats.
An advantage that no one else could replicate, allowing them to hold onto these abilities indefinitely.
Because of that, they didn't feel the need to seek out power at the expense of their time and safety.
They simply did not require it.
That's why Rai was convinced Jackson Bailey was not a Reincarnator.
If he's a Reincarnator, there's no merit in just holding onto the position of the Militia's Captain.
"That Captain, he's got no quirks at all, doesn't he?"
"Oh, really?"
"It's just... *too perfect*, you know?"
Rai placed a hand on his chin, furrowing his brow as he continued.
"The flow of public funds, factional conflicts, interpersonal relationships──truly, there are no issues at all. It's just *too much of a non issue*, don't you think?"
Everyone has inconvenient truths or troublesome aspects to them.
Yet for Jackson Bailey, there was none of that.
There were no cracks to slip through, none at all.
"Maybe he's intentionally hiding them."
And so, they decided to thoroughly investigate the surroundings of Jackson Bailey.
