Volume 3 Chapter 31 ACT.66 Unfavorable Enemy Territory (II)
Facing each other and just throwing out guesses won't change anything.
So, Rai and Leone decided to split up during the day and gather information, then meet back at their base at night.
And night came.
"──Excuse me, Ms. Leone?"
Rai, who had finished his task, returned to the rented house that served as their base, only to be greeted by a completely unexpected sight.
"Ah, Rai, welcome back!"
"Welcome home!"
"No, wait!"
──Their base had become a hangout for ruffians. Along with Leone, who had *already* arrived, there were 3 men.
All 3 sported untrimmed beards, oily faces, and shabby, unwashed clothes──clearly inhabitants of the slums.
Wine bottles littered the place, along with smoked meats and other snacks they had probably bought, and Leone, laughing boisterously, spread them out.
The men were singing and dancing in a strange way.
──It was a rather embarrassing sight.
"But, we're Holy Knights, aren't we?"
"There's no rule against Holy Knights drinking!"
"It's about not getting drunk and losing control!"
Overcome by the un-Holy Knight-like chaos, Rai covered his face with his hands and slumped to the floor.
For Rai, Leone was a senior knight of higher rank, and she had even been present at his test to become a Purge Knight and had given him her approval.
Seeing her in this state too──well, it just felt like she was breaking Rai's heart.
It was a huge disappointment.
"But, you know, they helped us out, so I had to thank them!"
"Help?"
Leone had spent the day investigating the scene from the previous night.
Perhaps she had asked them for help in exchange for alcohol.
"Yeah-ssu! For my sister! I worked hard for her!"
One of the ruffians, whose speech was slightly slurred, answered.
His skin was darker than Rai's, so he was probably an immigrant from another country.
"Hey, there's some dirt in this bag. Can you check it out?"
With the cheerful tension still in the air, Leone pointed to a spot on the floor, just a few paces away from where they had gathered for their meal.
There lay a soiled burlap sack.
At a glance, Rai could tell it held something heavy and large.
Wondering what sort of souvenir she had picked from the garbage heap that was their current site, Rai approached the sack and knelt down on one knee.
As soon as he untied the mouth of the sack and peered inside, Rai couldn't help but furrow his brow.
"──You've got to be kidding me. Calling this a 'souvenir' is a bit of a stretch."
Inside was a large limb and some sort of flesh and blood.
──It was a piece of the meat that had been shed by the Reincarnator Leone had fought the previous night.
