Volume 3 Chapter 27 ACT.62 Holy Knight and the Military Guard (II)
Jackson Bailey.
He holds the position of commander of the Proxima Garrison, and yet there's an almost jaded air about him, reflected in both his appearance and demeanor.
His gaze is sharp, but his skin is pale, as if it hasn't seen the sun, and his arms are slender.
Though he leads the soldiers, he looks more like a civilian officer, akin to Special Agent Priest Curtis, rather than a military figure like Rai or Leone.
As Rai looks at him, he can't help but think that he doesn't seem out of place in the organization──
rather, he's learned from his mentor, Aslan Aldabaran, that a person like this at the top reflects a superior organization.
An ideal leader is someone who can take a step back and make rational, detached decisions.
If the garrison is in charge of a role that requires combat, then it's preferable for the leader to be someone not directly involved in battle.
Because when someone is too in tune with the frontline, they might be swayed and fail to make the right decisions.
In that sense, the man before him scores a perfect ten.
Rai had already reviewed the basic information on Commander Jackson Bailey in the briefing he received beforehand.
──He was marked as a person of interest this time around.
"After all, our power dynamic with you is likely rooted in the mistakes made by the former king in the past, right?"
Rai implied that it was largely a case of 'you brought this upon yourselves.'
From Rai's perspective──no, from the Holy Church's viewpoint, they were merely cleaning up the mess of that blunder and would appreciate a bit less criticism.
If anything, they deserved thanks rather than resentment.
──Furthermore, Rai had quite a few thoughts regarding that incident.
The blunder made by the former king kicked off a tragedy about a decade ago when he underestimated the influence of the Saint and ignored her pleas.
By disregarding the trust placed in him and trying to handle the Reincarnator independently without relying on the Holy Church, he caused colossal damage to the Reincarnators.
In other words, he played a part in sparking what would be known as the [Aldra Rebellion].
"Be careful not to hold onto grudges too tightly."
With a slightly sharper tone, Rai finished signing the documents and stood up from his seat.
Without even a glance at Captain Bailey, he reached for the door, ready to leave.
"We're not exactly free to babysit you, so I hope you can wrap this up quickly."
Rai's retreating back was met with those words, dripping with the unspoken message: "We won't cooperate with you."
Ignoring the veiled threat, Rai simply left the room.
*Clack, clack, clack* went his boots as he strode down the garrison hallway, muttering under his breath.
"Something feels...off."
Sensing something more than the information he'd been given, Rai decided to investigate this guy alongside the current case.
