"──So, that's what happened last night, huh?"
"Exactly! I thought I was gonna die!"
"Most people would be dead if they were at the center of a fire."
Rai grimaced as he listened to Leone recount the intense battle from the night before.
A few days had passed since the Count Eltor incident.
The location he was directed to from the Saint Stella was the city of Proxima.
It was one of the most developed cities in the Kingdom, bustling with trade and commerce thanks to its prime location along major trade routes.
Leone had been deployed on a mission ahead of Rai, who was sent in as additional support.
And where Leone currently was──
"So, Rai, can we get out of here fast?"
──was behind bars in a detention cell.
Yesterday, there had been a significant fire on the edges of a slum near Proxima, and she got caught up in it──suspected as the arsonist and snatched by the military guard.
Rai felt a slight headache, or maybe it was more like dizziness, as he pressed his fingers against his forehead.
A Purge Knight is a select group among the Holy Knights belonging to the Holy Church.
It was just too cruel that someone in her prestigious position associated with the Holy Church was locked up in a cell by the town's military guard.
"I'll take care of the release paperwork, so just hang tight a bit longer."
"Yay! I love you, Rai!"
Whether she understood the situation or not, Leone stretched her arms through the bars, trying to reach Rai while chiming in a carefree manner.
Rai hurriedly stepped back from the bars.
"Whoa, stop it! You stink, stink, STINK!!"
"Ahh, that's not something you should say to a girl!!"
"At least take a moment to look at your own sorry state!"
The stench wafting from her was terrible, a result of her time spent in the garbage dump and the fire she'd encountered.
The guard's expression was one of disgust, unable to hide his discomfort from the stench that filled the room.
"Ugh, fine! I'll wrap this up quickly, so I'm just gonna head out now."
Ignoring the annoying, drunk-like antics of the senior knight, Rai gave a slight bow to the guard before exiting the room.
In response to Rai's greeting, the young guard responded with *complete indifference.*
As he walked down the corridor, the uncomfortable, piercing glares from passing guards made him sigh inwardly.
"Yeah, there's definitely a rift between the Holy Knights and the Guard."
The truth was, Leone's imprisonment was half about the accusations against her, and the other half was simply to stir up trouble.
In fact, the animosity between the Holy Knights, who belonged to the Holy Church, and the Guards of the Rubaus Kingdom was quite well-known throughout the land.
