Volume 4 Chapter 6 I Found a Noisy One

A few days later, I was inspecting the site for the new outer wall.

Of course, since it's an outer wall, it will surround the area except for the west, which faces the sea, and the south.

First, there's our house in the north.

Here, there's a vast forest, and to avoid it, there's a street leading to Marquis Burgmüller's territory along the coast.

This road turns east along the lakeshore where it meets a large saltwater lake, then extends north in a bit of a roundabout way.

It might have been laid out to be better than cutting through the deep forest.

"The new north wall is planned to be built at the edge of the forest. Then──will a wall be built right behind my house?"

While surveying along the street with the bureaucrats, I noticed something as I looked at the map.

My house is part of the Sartzstadt suburbs outside the old outer wall, and right behind it, to the north, there's a forest leading to the saltwater lake.

The new wall will be built right through there.

"Well, our field is on the south side, so it won't affect the sunlight... but in summer, the wall might reflect the sunlight and get hot."

 "Ah, that seems likely..."

"In that case, we should consider the color of the wall."

I asked the bureaucrats to write down these concerns on paper.

If we make the wall white, the reflection will be too strong.

For places with the same concerns as my house, it might be a good idea to make the inside of the wall black.

"But, until now we could go out to the forest behind us right away, and this seems a bit troublesome."

 "That's... please give it up."

The bureaucrat cut me down without mercy.

Well, that makes sense; they can't build an exit behind my house as a special favor.

The outer wall is for defense, so we must reduce unnecessary exits as much as possible.

"The west and south sides connect to the sea, so we need strong materials for the walls to resist weathering."

 Salt wind always degrades materials.

If we use the magic stone for the lock, it might be okay, but I don't know that magic stone's power very well.

It's a mystery whether it's strong against aging.

"I'll consult with Lene about wall materials and choose something resistant to degradation."

"Lord Huntwerker, I have a simple question: isn't stone masonry an option?"

"Sadly, we can't gain the magic stone's power with stone masonry."

I shrugged and answered that to the bureaucrat's obvious question.

The Magic Stone of Key only works when buried in a material.

Stone masonry can't meet that condition.

Lene once told me about a wall material called concrete.

When freshly mixed with water, it's fluid, but it hardens over time.

 This material allows embedding inside.

In fact, the Magic Stone of Key won't work unless it's in a material like that.

"Well, that covers this area of discussion. Let's head east."

 "Understood."

The bureaucrat and I walked toward the east, opposite the sea, following the map.

* * *

I arrived in the northeast part of town and stared at the map.

I had previously taken a request for making magic stones and medicines at a logging site, but now I had to walk further on a bumpy path.

"...Oh right, the northeast side has an uphill slope."

The road to the northeast gradually became steeper, with the logging site located halfway up the mountain.

I remembered hearing that there were other quarry sites too, and I thought for a moment.

"...If that's the case, we need an entrance for transporting materials from the logging site and quarries. But the walls here are high, and we need to make them very sturdy, plus we should prepare some lookout points."

 "Why is that?"

"I mentioned the entrance is necessary, but there's also the chance that suspicious people could sneak in during transportation. So we need to be very careful."

I had experience sneaking out of the Sakura Empire before, so I understood the risks involved.

Hiding in large supplies like timber is a standard way to break in.

I was busy writing this down when I noticed a woman walking from the direction of the logging site.

Her figure looked familiar, and I couldn't help but stop.

That light blue, distinctive bright hair...

"Oh? Isn't that Mr. Ryuuji! Hey there!"

 "...Yep, it's Aine."

The ever-energetic and carefree scholar found me and waved her hands vigorously, as if she might tear a muscle.
