Volume 4 Chapter 48 Crisis, and I'm Going Alone
"This doesn't look like a god of peace, but a god of war, right?"
Minori murmurs something unimportant.
Is this really the time for that?
"Suzu, back up and aim for the neck or body! Ai is Suzu's bodyguard!"
I quickly give orders, and my little sister immediately follows, moving far away from Abnella.
Suzu is in danger if she's targeted because of her lower mobility.
I need Ai to cover her, or we could be in trouble.
"What about us!?"
"Aim for the arms!"
"But we can't reach it!?"
Yeah, that's true.
Miloslaf with the greatsword can't reach it, and Minori with her 2-handed weapon can't either.
So, I handed a <Refined Magic Stone> to Minori.
My sister hurriedly stabbed the ground with her <Pierce> and took it.
"Big Bro Ryuuji, what is this?"
"It's the <Magic Stone of Wings>. The owner can run through the air at will, just imagine there's ground in the air."
I simply explained and then stepped back.
Since it's a new <Refined Magic Stone>, Minori hasn't used it yet.
I feel bad that it's a trial run.
"Hey, Count, don't I get one?"
"Sorry, there's only one."
While Minori and I were preparing, I feel bad for Miloslaf, who was holding off Abnella to buy us time.
But this magic stone is still a prototype.
I should have made more if I knew this would happen.
"Great magic god, grant me a fraction of your power, a hammer to smite the fierce god, <Mjolnir>!"
Suzu's high-level magic struck Abnella's face, sending the god reeling.
Right away, Ai's shuriken released, piercing the red eyes.
As the armless giant tried to pull out the shuriken, the two vanguards rushed in, slashing the arms apart.
Well, I'll do my job my way.
"In the name of Ryuuji, become a blade that pierces through anything, <Sharpness>!"
After granting Minori and Miloslaf's weapons with temporary enchantments on the front line, I fished through my magic bag for useful potions and bombs.
"<Grenade>... is too wide-range and risky. <Napalm>... might work, but if it catches fire, Minori and the others could be in danger. Then... an ice-type?"
Thinking that freezing his feet would be effective, I took out the ice bomb from my magic bag and threw it without hesitation.
The bottle shattered, and a fierce cold froze Abnella's right foot.
This should limit their movement.
"Good job, Count! Do the left foot too!"
"Got it, now──wait, something's coming, be careful!"
Just as I was about to throw the second ice bomb, I saw Abnella raise his right arm high and warned the two vanguards.
It looks like he're about to slam his sword down, but it's different.
He's planning some other action.
"This is... bad! Both of you, get down!"
The moon, our only light shining down on us, vanished in an instant.
So, I channeled strong magic power into the 'Magic Stone of Luminous' at my waist and hurled it forward while shouting.
Perhaps intuitively sensing danger, the two vanguards also quickly distanced themselves from Abnella.
Maybe this is the same as when Emerada──
No sooner had I thought that than, with a roar, lightning struck Abnella's sword.
It was the same behavior as when Emerada turned into a fiend.
At night, and being the first time, we wouldn't have noticed.
We were lucky.
But this way, we can't get close.
If we attack like this, for sure──
"If we attack directly in this state, we'll get struck by lightning, right?"
"Hey, seriously? We could've died there!"
Hearing Minori's explanation, Miloslaf, who was about to strike, halted.
It seemed the power of the lightning wouldn't subside unless we waited a bit.
In the meantime, Abnella switched his right sword to his left hand.
Even Minori, the closest one, was at a distance; he must be planning to do something.
Then, Abnella thrust his right sword deep into the ground right before him.
The impact made the ground shake for a moment.
"What the hell is he──"
I didn't even have time to think.
We were blown into the air by a massive explosion bursting from the ground, and we soared through the sky.
* * *
"Ugh... gugh..."
My groan woke me up.
I must have broken bones all over; my whole body feels like it's in pieces.
The moonlight has returned to the surroundings.
It seems I wasn't asleep for that long.
Is everyone all right?
I wonder what's become of Abnella.
Pushing through the ache in my body, I look around and see everyone lying on the ground.
Even Miloslaf is down.
"Abnella...?"
Squinting in the dark, I focus on the sounds around me and start searching.
That's when I notice a slithering sound coming from the opposite direction of the South Gate.
"...Could Abnella be heading south?"
I get up, pull out a Lene-special Healing Potion from my magic bag, and drink it as I approach Ai and Suzu nearby.
They don't seem to have many external injuries, but they might have broken bones or concussions.
"...Papa?"
"Ai, you're awake. Can you drink this Healing Potion?"
"Yeah..."
As I hand over the potion, Ai winces, sits up, and guzzles it down.
It won't fix her bones right away, but──
"I'll leave this place to you, Ai."
"...Huh, what do you mean?"
Ai watches me, biting her lip against the pain as I gaze south.
She must know what I'm about to do.
"Nothing, just going to destroy that god."
"Papa, you're going alone!? ...Ugh!?"
As the loud sound echoes through her body, Ai curls up.
Without another word to her, I start walking towards the south.
Leaving Ai's voice calling out to me behind, I began to chase after Abnella.
