Volume 4 Chapter 40 The Operation with the Minimum Number of People

 "Man, I'm really tired..."

Looking at the pile of bodies in front of me, I just slumped down, feeling completely drained.

The air was thick with the smell of blood, and I was covered in it myself.

I thought I would need to wash off somewhere before going home.

I killed everyone, including the Romanov soldiers coming at me, and even those who tried to escape to the south.

I let the ones who ran north go since that area was already occupied by the Romanov.

After killing this many, I can only say I feel "tired," so yeah, I must be a bit crazy.

Sure, in my life as an Adventurer, I've been attacked by fellow explorers before, but I've never been surrounded by this many dead bodies.

"Lord Huntwerker! Are you safe? Lord Huntwerker!"

Oh, I hear the captain of the guards from the other side of the wall.

 I should head back.

* * *

"Hey, hey! Did something fun happen? Call me!"

"I didn't have time to call you."

After washing off some blood, I reported everything to Lord Reichner, and just when I thought I'd finally go home, Miloslav jumped on me.

Honestly, I really wanted to leave everything to you, you battle maniac.

And without any time to rest, I had to report to His Majesty through long-distance communication.

It seemed His Majesty was shocked to learn that the Burgmüller lord had defected and the northwest was taken.

I can't blame them for that.

"There are a few soldiers I couldn't save. I'm sorry for my lack of strength."

'No... you defeated over a hundred soldiers alone. I wouldn't even joke about being weak.'

I truly am sorry, but His Majesty simply looked at me with a blank face.

I think it's not about the number of troops but about strategy.

Depending on how we fight, we could have wiped them all out.

'However, Your Majesty, if there are soldiers we let escape, they might attack us again.'

Just like His Excellency Duke Hoffman, who is commanding the army and sighing, the Romanov Empire has taken over Guant Kingdom, so they are rich in soldiers and resources.

They might quickly organize and head toward Sartzstadt.

'I see... then we need to strengthen Sartzstadt's defenses quickly.'

"But we can't neglect the northern border of Raudinger either."

 'That's right...'

I can feel that His Majesty is worried, beyond the magic stone, as I listen to my advice.

I appreciate the concern, but the route from Beistein Kingdom's northwest to Raudinger Capital City isn't only through Sartzstadt.

There's also a route passing through the northeast.

Right now, the standoff seems to continue along the northern mountain trail, but we don't know when that balance might break.

Thinking of that, we probably shouldn't weaken the northern defenses of Raudinger.

If that's the case, it's best to take back the northwest with a small force.

If we can take Kleinburg, we can first stop the southward advance to Sartzstadt.

"Your Majesty, I have a suggestion."

 'What is it?'

I quickly proposed a plan to take Kleinburg.

It's a bold idea to go in with just me, Miloslaf, Minori, Suzu, and Ai.

 'Another reckless plan...'

I could hear a big sigh from Your Majesty.

Well, it might be a reckless plan, but with the explosives made by Lene in my hands, and with Miloslaf being stronger than me, and Minori and Suzu, who are First Rank Adventurers, plus Ai who is great at stealth, we should be suited for covert operations.

'But Your Majesty, the Romanov soldiers likely have guns. If we go in with a lot of people, the casualty rate could be high. So targeting them with a small elite force that has the <Magic Stone of Great Absolute> makes sense.'

It seems like His Excellency Prime Minister Schnorr understood my intention.

That's right, with the Great Magic Stone of Diamond, bullets won't get through.

But if we go with a large number, we can't distribute the magic stones to everyone, which could lead to casualties.

So the plan is to go with only those who have magic stones.

After a few seconds of silence, Your Majesty said, "We have no choice," and the decision was made to start the operation to take back Kleinburg.

"Lord Huntwerker, may I give you an urgent report?"

Just as the meeting was about to end, I heard the voice of my attendant, Lot, coming from the corridor.

 An urgent report?

'Alright, I want to confirm it too.'

 "Understood. ──Come in!"

When I called out, Lot, who opened the door, noticed that I was in the middle of a communication and froze.

Now that I think about it, I knew this communication was with His Majesty.

"Ah, I didn't realize you were in the middle of a communication! My apologies!"

 'It's fine, report it.'

 "Y-Yes!"

Whether it was due to His Majesty's voice that upset him, after taking a deep breath and holding it in, Lot made the following announcement.

"At the checkpoint in front of the Saltwater Lake, including the squad leader, one sentinel soldier, and the body of a Romanov soldier have all disappeared!"
