Volume 4 Chapter 16 The Reason They Know It

 "........."

After reporting to His Majesty, I climbed onto the roof of my house and was lost in thought all alone.

If you ask what I'm pondering about──

"...it's the Alchemist's Gun being copied to trigger a civil war..."

A weapon originally created by Lene to protect herself has fallen into the hands of heretics, and they're trying to mass-produce it to stir up trouble in the countries around the Romanov Empire.

I'm struggling with how to break this news to my wife.

Luckily, or rather, when I reported to His Majesty earlier, Lene had to leave for town on other business, so she wasn't around.

...Well, that's why I'm worrying about this now.

"Oh, there you are. What are you doing, Count?"

 "......hmm?"

I turned around at the sudden voice and, sure enough, Miloslaf had crawled up onto the roof.

What's this, I was supposed to be alone with my thoughts.

"What am I doing? It's like you see. Just watching the sunset."

"You're probably thinking about how to tell your wife that the Alchemist's Gun is being misused in other countries, right?"

 "........."

Caught off guard by his insight, I was left speechless.

 How does he know that?

Miloslaf sat down next to me and yawned, as if basking in the spring sunshine.

He looks like just an ordinary guy, but he's actually a knight of the Evil God Abnella, and he's incredibly strong on top of that...

"So, what are you going to do?"

 "What can I do..."

Suddenly pushed from the side, I swallowed the words I was about to say.

I'm not sure why I'm being cornered by this old guy in the first place.

"...Even if I keep quiet, Lene will eventually find out. I might as well be the one to tell her."

Even if I don't tell her, the problem will eventually surface.

I don't know how far the research on the Romanov Empire's Alchemist's Gun has progressed, but Miloslaf said it's just a matter of time.

Then, it's better to talk properly and think about how to respond instead of staying silent.

After explaining that, Miloslaf replied nonchalantly, "I guess so."

This guy probably doesn't want this information to be known within the Beistein Kingdom, but unfortunately, I'm not planning to just wait around for an internal conflict.

"So, what's the logic in causing internal strife in other countries for world peace? Won't it just increase conflicts?"

"Don't ask me. I'm just following the Pope's orders."

To my simple question, Miloslaf replied sharply, showing no cuteness at all.

Well, I'm not expecting any cuteness from an old man.

Still, it's quite a high status to be ordered around by the Pope, considering the habits of underground organizations.

Anyway, aside from Guarelt trying to provoke internal strife, the ideas of heretics are incomprehensible.

Emerada, who clearly engaged in actions that caused confusion, also had the power of the 'Godslayer'. Her actions might have aligned with Abnella's ideals, but I still can't understand it.

"...Yeah, I still have some questions for you, Miloslaf."

"Huh? What is it? There are limits to what I can answer about the empire and the organization."

"Well, it's a bit tricky when you bring up the Empire or the Organization, but──why does the Empire know about the Western Continent and the Quechua Empire that exists there?"

I decided to grill Miloslaf, who was already overwhelmed by the earlier questioning from His Majesty, with a question that seemed rather trivial to him.

Yes, about the Western Continent that the sailors of Sartzstadt finally found, why does the Empire know of its existence?

And they seem to know more about it than we do.

Miloslaf gave me a momentary puzzled look, then quickly tapped his hand on the table and nodded, "I see what you mean."

"Ah, right. It's common knowledge in the Empire, but I guess it's not the same for other countries... A long time ago, sailors from the Quechua Empire washed up on the western shores of the Romanov Empire."

"Sailors...? They sure managed to get there alright."

It's surprising to hear that Sartzstadt only recently reached the Western Continent, considering that these refugees had already accomplished it ages ago.

To my astonishment, Miloslaf replied, "It seems you can reach the East from the West if the currents are in your favor."

Apparently, the west coast of the Romanov Empire is where the currents from the West hit directly.

"And these people are the ancestors of those who now worship God Abnella."

And so, this incredibly important information was casually passed on to us.
