Volume 4 Chapter 1 The Reason for Building Walls
While eating lunch with Mr. Thor, I learned he got a request from Lord Reichner.
He wants to build a new outer wall for the town, stronger than the old one. This job is really important.
It didn't seem like lunch talk.
By the way, my sisters and the eldest are not here.
They are on a trip as Adventurers.
They should be back soon.
"Mama, are you okay?"
"Thanks, Little Maria. I'm fine..."
My wife seems out of it, resting her head on the table.
Mr. Thor, picky about Lene's cooking, judged it harshly, and this is the result.
"Mr. Thor, your opinions really help! My cooking still needs work!"
"No, no, I'm still learning too. I need to give more detailed feedback."
"Uh... more than this...?"
Mr. Thor answered Belle with a wry smile, and Lene, still resting her head, let out a voice of despair.
It seems she's really crushed.
Maybe I went too far.
"Hey, Uncle Thor, stop picking on Mama!"
"Ahaha, sorry, Marie! But don't you want to eat Mom's delicious food?"
"I want to!"
"Ugh..."
It was Mariana who was raising her voice in protest, but she was smoothly sidetracked by Mr. Thor's seemingly perfect response, and she started to shine her eyes brightly, clapping her hands.
I feel like Lene's moans are mixed with a hint of complaints.
"...So, Mr. Thor, about what you said earlier... You mean building on the outside of the existing outer wall, right? Does Lord Reichner have some intention behind this?"
After the meal, we returned to business talk, and I asked about it.
Here in Sartzstadt, there's already something called the outer wall, stretching from the north to the south.
Of course, if that becomes the inner wall, it means the new one will be built on the outside.
To my question, Mr. Thor muttered, "Hmmm..." and glanced over at Mariana.
The girl tilted her head and asked, "What is it?"
"...Maria, could you go to my room, or maybe go to Lana's place? Papa and I have something important to discuss."
"Ah, okay."
Sensing the meaning behind Mr. Thor's gaze, I asked Mariana to leave, and the girl obediently listened and headed towards the entrance.
She's probably going to the neighbors, Lana's place.
Lately, she's been getting along well with the dragon Flamme.
After the girl left, Mr. Thor cleared his throat lightly.
Perhaps, it's something he doesn't want my daughter to hear.
"...Lately, there have been a series of shooting incidents in the northern Burkmüller Marquis territory."
"...Shooting, incidents."
I repeated those words and couldn't help but glance at Lene.
My wife looked up, her face still in shock.
Her expression was a bit tense.
"A shooting incident... Could it be from the Alchemist's Gun?"
I asked this carefully, but surprisingly, Mr. Thor shook his head and denied it.
Wait, if it's not the Alchemist's Gun, what does a shooting incident mean?
By the way, Lene designed the Alchemist's Gun, but only a few skilled workers can handle it in the country.
After all, it's a powerful weapon that always hits its target.
It's too dangerous.
