Volume 6 Chapter 78 Flame and Ice

Airen's group froze the ground and attacked, completely surprising Duke's army.

The bad footing was a problem, but the fast-moving cannons were an even bigger threat.

The sled pulled by the Ice Wolves used a magic Icy jump to fly over the enemy lines to the back.

They quickly surrounded the enemy, and then spread magic over the unprepared Duke army.

 "Cavalry, stop those dogs!"

The enemy commander shouted, but the cavalry's feet were also frozen.

The sudden turn made the horses fall, and the Knights on them were hurt.

While the enemy was confused, some of the Ice Wolf troops, who had spread magic randomly, jumped over the jump again and went back into the castle gates.

In just a few minutes, the battle was decided.

 The ground was still frozen.

And it was also a little sloped.

Enemy soldiers fell, used their weapons as canes, and tried to melt the ground with magic.

The soldiers were only focused on their feet, so they couldn't even fight Airen's group.

 Arrows and magic flew.

 Soldiers with spears slipped.

 ──Their numbers quickly decreased.

Airen made the first move, but she didn't let her guard down.

Even though they were confused, the enemy also had mages.

──"If the ground is bad, they'll probably change it."

When Randy's words echoed in Airen's head, she felt a big magical power ahead.

 "Everyone, get back!"

Airen shouted, and everyone jumped back.

Then, flames burst from the ground, hurting the Duke soldiers who were supposed to be their allies.

Airen's group got away in time, so they weren't hurt much, but the Duke army was in a terrible situation.

 "Looks like we guessed right."

Airen's eyes narrowed, and she saw the woman with a lot of skin showing──Lucy──in the back.

 She wasn't dressed for battle.

 Airen smiled fiercely, "Finally."

It wasn't like yesterday when she was all hot and bothered.

This was revenge for what they did to her brother and mother.

It was a quiet anger, a plan to get even.

Airen, still in her Icy skates, dashed forward and leaped, trampling an enemy soldier before landing in front of Lucy.

Neither of them knew each other.

Yet, in an instant, they understood each other's presence.

"We're meeting for the first time, [Pilgrim of Truth],"

"[Frostdance Princess], you're younger than I thought."

Over the sound of the battlefield's roar, the two locked eyes, the noise seemed distant.

"I am Airen, daughter of Rolf von Waldner,"

Airen thrust her sword forward and exhaled slowly.

"What's your name, [Pilgrim of Truth]?"

Airen glared straight at Lucy, who placed a hand on her cheek and gave a seductive smile. "Sure thing,"

"The top executive of the Four Saints. I'm [Crimson Saint] Lucia Red Griev,"

Lucy winked and said, "Call me Lucy."

Without breaking eye contact, Airen snorted, "A Saint, huh?"

"You're nothing like the Saints I know."

"I'd be embarrassed to be associated with such a young girl."

Lucy mocked, but Airen's expression didn't change.

She just remembered the words she exchanged with her younger friend.

──She's calling herself a Saint after helping your mother and brother?

──Isn't that okay, though? To fail, to rise again, and to still be true to herself, and now to start attracting people. She seems like a Saint befitting Lady Catherine.

(I thought she was too naive back then...)

Now she understand what Liz meant.

For Airen too, [Saint] is a title only that cheeky girl can claim.

(I can't stand her brash way of speaking though.)

Remembering this, Airen let out a "Phew" and laughed.

"That title is too heavy for you."

"Oh... you can be provoked easily, huh?"

Smiling, Airen shook her head and said, "It's the truth."

"I'm glad it was me who heard your name. If it were them... you'd be nothing but ashes by now."

Airen's mockingly tossed back laugh caused Lucy's smiling face to twist as she said, "You're so cheeky."

 "I'll teach you."

 "Here's your line."

Surrounding the two who were glaring at each other, countless red and orange magic circles appeared, covering the sky.

 It was like a sunset.

From the sky dyed in scorching heat, flames of crimson descended.

Exploding flames turned into pillars of fire, raging wildly.

The storm of swirling flames burned everything around, distinguishing neither friend nor foe.

"Oh my, you haven't melted yet."

Lucy, who had somehow distanced herself, chuckled and Airen returned the laugh, saying, "This isn't enough."

(The retreat earlier had minimal impact on their own forces...)

Glancing around, she could see several charred corpses of what must have been Duke's army lying on the ground.

"Can't even tell friend from foe..."

"Silly. For me, everyone but that person is an enemy."

Lucy smiled seductively and readied her staff again.

"Now, [Dance Princess]. Will you dance for me?"

Once more, formations floated in the sky, and flames arrows rained down.

Confronted with the approaching flames, Airen brandished her swords with both hands.

A dance of silver in the flames.

In Airen's hands were beautiful, translucent swords like ice.

With each flip of the swords, the flames were brushed away, while at the same time, icy flowers bloomed around.

A dance of flames and misty ice.

While it appeared to be a beautiful spectacle, it was actually a sea of fire and the abyss of ice slicing through it.

No one could approach that storm; they could only watch over the beautiful yet terrifying dance.

"Tsk, you're more capable than I thought."

Lucy's face twisted as she took a large step back.

As Airen danced through the flames, she gradually closed the distance between them.

 Airen took a step forward.

 The swung ice swords.

The flash of the swords seemed to split the flames ── but then, the ground instantly froze over.
