Volume 6 Chapter 64 The Opponent Wasn't Right
The opponent──
The man who ran from the cliff with the lighthouse ran through the streets, sometimes hiding in crowds, sometimes blending into the dark. Always on alert for the presence of the Dark Tide and any pursuers, he hurried to the hideout.
His bad luck was that Randy stayed very calm.
At first, Randy erased his presence until he appeared in front of the men.
That's how he caught them off guard. But to hide the fact that he blocked his presence, Randy deliberately gave off a strong killing intent and slaughtered them.
Killing intent and overwhelming violence.
Because of that, Randy's presence stuck in the man's mind.
Randy's ability to hide himself even fools beasts, and with this false impression added, the man could never recognize Randy.
Looking back, checking around, taking many detours... but he still couldn't find the hidden Randy.
Finally, the man arrived at a single mansion. It was called a mansion, but it was just a fancy house Randy and Liz rented in the capital city.
Light leaked from the mansion, mixed with cheerful laughter.
There was no way this looked like a terrorist hideout.
The man easily climbed over the mansion's fence and rushed into a storage shed in the yard.
Randy followed quietly and opened the door──but the man was nowhere inside, only some messy garden tools.
"Huh? Oh?"
Randy tilted his head, but the man's presence definitely led under the shed.
(Some kind of concealment magic, huh.)
The door under the shed was hidden by magic.
Randy guessed this, and decided to "try it out." He placed his hands on the ground and pressed hard.
A metal-like creak echoed around, and then... "Boom!" A loud sound broke something free.
"Bingo. Even if it's hidden, there's still something there."
In front of Randy's smiling eyes was the earthen ground, warped open into a hole.
Though magic concealment remained, having a real object let Randy break the door open with brute force.
Randy grabbed the warped, crushed soil and pulled hard.
The sound of metal creaking echoed, as the door seemed to tear apart from the ground.
Beyond the completely opened hole, a staircase leading down appeared.
A warm breeze came up, sounding almost like a moan.
Randy boldly descended into a place where any normal person would hesitate.
At the bottom of the long, dark staircase, a surprisingly vast underground space stretched out before him.
Softly glowing magical lamps illuminated beautifully arranged brick-like walls and a door leading further inside.
And then... the sound of Randy breaking through the door alerted the members of the [Pilgrim of Truth], who were on high alert.
Since some humans were coming out from the door, it might be their living space beyond.
"Hey, I'm coming in!"
With a sly grin, Randy faced the [Pilgrim of Truth], who gripped their weapons tightly and crouched down.
"What the hell? If you want me gone, at least say 'go away'. You guys are so boring!"
Randy scratched his head, frowning, but then changed his mindset, clenching his fist with a "Well, it can't be helped."
"How did you find this place?"
"I didn't find it, I was just shown the way."
Randy laughed, while the man trying to escape looked like he'd bitten into something sour.
"I see. So, a fool rushed in, eager for glory."
Another man snickered.
He was right; if they found the hideout, the usual move would be to report to their allies and take control... but standing in front of them was Randy.
They still didn't know that having a useless ally around would only slow them down, while Randy could fight alone more effectively.
The men entirely surrounded Randy, all placing their hands on the wall, murmuring some spell.
Instantly, magical power flowed through the wall, covering the entrance and door Randy had come through with bricks.
"Now you can't escape."
The man in the center smirked and took a step forward, asking, "Got any last words?"
"Hmm... Let's make this place the secret base of the [Randy Exploration Team] Braubelg branch!"
At Randy's words, the man raised his eyebrows and asked, "What?" Just then, his head burst open.
A delayed "Bang!" echoed, and what had been a man crumbled down to his knees.
A headless corpse.
Blood gushed out from the neck.
His heart still wouldn't accept death.
Some of the [Pilgrim of Truth] gulped when they saw the creepy sight, then someone shouted, "Unleash the Doomhound!"
The men froze for a moment, but then they all started chanting in a hurry.
The chanting, like a curse, spread throughout the room...
"Oh, End that lurks in the shadows, come forth!"
...At one man's command, everyone put their hands on the ground.
Then a huge mist appeared in front of Randy, and it slowly turned into a big 4-legged beast.
"This is the great being we, the [Pilgrim of Truth], have made a contract with."
The man was grinning proudly, but Randy could only see a giant wolf's shadow.
"This is it?"
Randy frowned, and the men started to boast to him.
They said it was a beast made from people's fear of death.
They said it was a hunter lurking in the shadows.
They said that neither physical attacks nor magic could touch it.
They said it wouldn't disappear until it killed its enemy.
They said it was impossible to defeat.
They said all this in a rush and with pride, but Randy didn't care.
The only thing that caught his attention was the last phrase.
──Impossible to defeat.
When he heard that, Randy wanted to try to defeat it.
"Come on. I'll make you a page in my legend."
Randy grinned, and the Doomhound growled with anger, "Grrr," and jumped at Randy.
The Doomhound's fangs came close to his eyes.
Randy kicked with his right leg.
The kick hit the Doomhound's face... but it missed.
More like, it went right through the Doomhound.
"Oh?"
The Doomhound clawed at Randy, who was surprised.
Randy was a little slow to dodge.
The Doomhound's claws scratched his chest.
Blood slowly oozed from the torn skin.
Randy took a step back to avoid the next attack.
"See? You dodged the direct hit, but slowly──"
"Shut up, you loser."
Randy shut the man up and grinned at the Doomhound, saying, "I'm having fun now."
"My attacks go right through you, but yours hit... huh? Then──"
They glared at each other, slowly sizing up the distance... Then Randy closed the gap in a flash!
